Can i safely put a WD Red Plus in my desktop, as a single backup drive?
Holy moly even older
Can I use this one as my external storage?
The intro thought xD
He kinda reminds me of that guy from that meme who has a smoke in his hand while explaining to someone all this knowledge while looking crazy.Jokes aside. Thanks for the help.
Remember the days before WD started putting SMR on NAS drives?
Anyone in 2020
Hi Linus tech, will it be possible to use this hard drive to install MacOS Catalina on Mac, or is it only for data storage but not for an operating system, and is the hard drive noisy when it is on? Thanks
a couple OF seconds (NOT a couple seconds)!!!!!
a couple OF bucks (NOT a couple bucks)!!!!
Good for pc
It work for ps4 ?!?
they are really loud btw
Holy shit this feels old.
this thing is slow as chuck it got a 43 on as ssd
Holy $H!T This is Old
You get the drives in just bubble wrap..
Nice, I almost used Seagate SSHDs for RAID...
I have one of these drives that I stripped out of the wd network drive case because it was not being recognised on the network. Can you advise how I might go about recovering files that I have stored in it?
How well would these work as a PC's primary hard drive? The reliability is a very attractive feature.
I did NASee that coming.
A hot chick doing tech videos? Hmm, I'm good with that lmao. You should go into SAS drives, if gigabit networking is the bottleneck then I don't need to go with SAS but I know what I'm going to choose now, thank you very much. I'm definitely subscribing to you! :)For the record, I was eyeing this, needing a raid pcie card, but I was thinking for unraid. Clearly it is a bit overkill.Seagate Enterprise Capacity ST14000NM0048 14TB 7200RPM 12Gb/s SAS 256MB Enterprise Hard Drive (EXOSX14 512E/4KN SAS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RZ8BLGL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AW6WFK94STDSEG4G60RB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you want a NAS drive the best is to buy a enterprise version, because that one is more optimized than the NAS niche.
I just had a 10tb wd red plus WD101EFAX come in yesterday, put it in my system and within 5 mins took it out because the vibration noise was so loud it was louder than the box fan i had running. Apparently thats because all the 10tb now are air based. i was hoping it would be as good as my 4tb wd reds WD40EFRX that make absolutely 0 noise. you have to put your ear on them to hear anything. any chance you can test the wd red 12tb models. considering this one WD120EFAX but cant find any technical specs on noise comparison vs my 4tbs.
ooh, i can make use of my 10gbs ethernet port on my pc! lol - just got to work out what the best setup is for my budget - bookmarked for future reference
What about the Seagate Exos drives? Those are NAS-Archive drives. Interesting for Movies maybe
Have you've heard about "head parking" on hdd's? You should consider this too since you have mention non-SMR and these two are not related to each other, but when you are buying hdd you are expecting to last as much as more... ;)
Time to look for the NAS enclosure video. Great info.
Please make a video on HDDs showing if using a 5400 RPM vs a 7200 RPM drive in real world makes any noticable difference. And also, does 5400 rpm drives lower your fps or not?
Having had lots of issues with both WD and Seagate I find that the market is severely limited.
I have an 8TB SMR in my secondry system. In my main system I use an Exos 8TB CMR. If I ever move to a NAS I will use only server grade drives such as the Exos
Looking forward to a roundup of the next generation of hi-tech hdd from WD and Seagate fall of 2021. These are promised to utilise a heat or microwave to achieve higher density (HAMR AND MAMR). This means data transfer will be faster than current generation (rotary advantage of higher density) and will shame all budget and some mid range ssd
Excellent roundup! Thanks! The only thing I need is to know which drives have APM vs AAM (advance power v acoustic management) . I think all of them will have NCQ technology.
I would recommend to schuck a hard drive from a portable drive. It's cheaper that way.
you would have to be a moron to get a 8TB HDD, so many platters that could get corrupted to make the drive fail in 5 minutes
Nvme win10 1st bought 512gb Adata Nvme-m2 - and i d/load to that then transfer to a SSD 2-5gb movie blink its done but to copy to a HDD 5 -10ms L8tr 150 mbs but cheaperportable - hdd drop on floor 3tb poof X drop ssd on floor still works 2 years data lost $150 hddbuy new 2tb samsung 750 SSD $ 260 same speeds as the > -* Nvme-m2 2tb 560r/500w$280 wd blue HDD 4gb $180 6gb $230 8gb $350 +/- AU $
Just picked up 4x WD 8tb drives
It's true that all drives will eventually fail, but the toshibas will fail first. Usually within a month after the warranty expires.
I have to admit thou ssd is necessities in today setup. But if you are a content creator, photographer or video grapher who wants to throw all your raw pic & vid files buy hdd as a storage and make it into raid or nas :DCurrent SetupC: NVME 512GBD: Samsung Evo 860 512GbE: Seagate Baruda 2TB 7200RPM (Backup)
Never seen this reviewer but she really knows her stuff. Looking forward to seeing more of their content
You know nothing about hard drives and should just delete this video.
nr 1.best wd red SMR hehe.
5 minutes of my life wasted
SMR in the WD and other drives is as bad as you can buy for a NAS. So this vid is bullcrap. Don't listen to a word in this vid!!
The SMR on the BarraCudas don't inspire much confidence. IronWolfs are PMR and CMR. You need to detail the tech specs a bit more.
WD Red is not an appropriate HDD for a NAS, their SMR solution is not designed for rebuilds... do research.
*I TOSHIBA N300*
No Comment of WD using SMR instead of PMR (there is a performance difference)?
Your offerings are too smallI need 16 TB drives and possibly biggerThese colors confuse me
Are you WD customer service agent or something? You talk like them. I have question for you. I have 10TB music archive. I am sharing my files with Soulseek. My computer is 24/7 open and not always but most of time it does read due to uploads. And sometimes i download new music files. Now... Due to disk plates will be more on higher capacities and i want less head, surface fails, i will buy 4TB drives. In addition i am trying to buy CMR/PMR drives. WD40PURZ/WD40PURX (I don't know which one is PMR/CMR), WD40EZRZ and WD40EFRX are my options. So which one do you recommend me in these? Thank you.
i have a WD cloud home with red drive and would like to put a faster drive in it what should i use ?
I just found this today... Might help people who are weary of using a purple drive in anything other than a DVR or surveillance system.https://archive.techarp.com/showarticlefdb0.html?artno=826&pgno=0If you don't feel like reading it, it basically states that unless the host (desktop or server) is specifically requesting to use ATA streaming commands (where write speed is prioritized over accuracy) the drive will just be treated as a normal hard disk and will NOT skip data for the sake of speed. It will operate just like a normal hard disk.
Seems like ED Purple is more appropriate as a unRaid Parity drive. And read speed wise, my guess is that something else will bottleneck before the HDD read speed does. Your Ethernet, router, system, etc.
Is WD Gold the better option for NAS or is the value not their ?
Outdated, as of 2020 WD reds is now mixed with inferior and or noisy drives. For high capacity and maximum performance and mtbf go for ultrastar helium series. (7+ platters)For quiet nas solution go for wd purple (1~5 platters)The more platter the more noisy the drive.
For those who where trapped in wd drives marketing, one advice : buy the cheapest drive !I found brand new 2Tb wd purple for 22 / piece and it would do the job in my mdadm raid as green, red or any other drive you could put in it.Monitor and backup are the only important things when it comes to secure your data. Raid only exists to keep your data online as much as possible.For experience return, my oldest green drive in raid :=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===Model Family: Western Digital GreenDevice Model: WDC WD20EZRX-00DC0B0ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always - 03 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 172 170 021 Pre-fail Always - 43834 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1555 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 07 Seek_Error_Rate 0x002e 100 253 000 Old_age Always - 09 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 019 019 000 Old_age Always - 5928210 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 011 Calibration_Retry_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 012 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 132192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 108193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 55194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 110 080 000 Old_age Always - 37196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 0199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 0that's a long run for this low power gree drive, any sign of failure atm.Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error# 1 Short offline Completed without error 00% 59268 -# 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 59097 -# 3 Short offline Completed without error 00% 58931 -# 4 Short offline Completed without error 00% 58763 -# 5 Short offline Completed without error 00% 58595 -# 6 Short offline Completed without error 00% 58427 -# 7 Short offline Completed without error 00% 58259 -# 8 Short offline Completed without error 00% 58092 -# 9 Short offline Completed without error 00% 57924 -#10 Short offline Completed without error 00% 57756 -#11 Short offline Completed without error 00% 57588 -#12 Short offline Completed without error 00% 57420 -#13 Short offline Completed without error 00% 57252 -#14 Short offline Completed without error 00% 57085 -#15 Short offline Completed without error 00% 56917 -#16 Short offline Completed without error 00% 56749 -#17 Short offline Completed without error 00% 56581 -#18 Short offline Completed without error 00% 56413 -#19 Short offline Completed without error 00% 56245 -#20 Short offline Completed without error 00% 56078 -#21 Short offline Completed without error 00% 55912 -11 drive under operation (mixed wd20ears/wd20ezrx) , 8 are perfectly fine, 3 sometimes show some read error, all recovered from mdadm parity.2 Red in operation at time, low hours count, fine too.3 purple to come in array !last thing, i never got a drive kicked from array within last 10 years :D

Could I get a Red and a Purple WD HDD? I was considering putting a 4tb Red in the primary slot for data storage (I have a smaller SSD for the OS & programs on my desktop, and store/save all my files on the Synology NAS). Then putting a 4tb Purple in slot 2 and having 6 cameras record to that drive/ file allocation. Is that a bad idea to mix drives in a Synology?
This is now out of date since WD sneaked SMR into Reds. So you now pay more for Red Pro to avoid shingles, or get Purple which is still CMR, because that allows faster writes (when writing lots of gigabytes)
Can i use 2 WD 10TB in a 4 bay NAS systems
9 minutes and 3seconds wasted, what a shame. Expected to see some graphics, results or something. Instead, we hear alot of blabla, without backing it up with proof. And, as Nik says; really did not think it through enoung. Tell me, for example, how much IO do i need to load a game, play a video, or save a download? Not all the the same time ofcourse. Yes, i mean for personal use. I can imagine that a NAS for multiple people have other demands, aka higher demands. But for one person? So, the answer should be: it all depends of what the intentions are.
Please make a video on how Fred uses his NAS for coding...
Sir can you help me? I have new wd purple 8gb,why I cannot use this drive with my pc? Can I use this wd purple 8gb for nas? It can be use with nas,can you give me recomended what nas can use my purple. Sir pls help me,I need the answer it's important for me because my wd still cannot use.
You cannot use purple hdd for NAS only red hdd
Good video!
3:47 wanton women are too astute to spread their favours at home - they'll have their affairs in shopping centre car parks or seedy rent-by-the-hour motels.4:45 "years worth of use out of them" is not my experience with numerous WD Red drives at a number of installations. Some have failed in under a year, others in over a year - but none have survived longer than two years. Even an installation using Red Pro drives saw them failing after approximately three years of use. Not quite as bad as the old WD Greens, but bad enough to not be trustworthy for anything more than backup (i.e., definitely don't rely on the Reds to house your sole copy of important data).I've just installed a set of WD Purples in a new backup environment and will see how long they manage to stay afloat. Damned shame that WD bought and buried HGST - I've _never_ had a HGST drive fail, even with the oldest ones still running for 6+ years 24/7. Similar story with Toshiba (though my oldest Toshiba drive in a similar environment is just a little over four years old).
Howdy !!I am Darul from Texas.I learned so much from your YouTube channel and I really appreciate your work. You literally walked me through the buying process and setup and up and running. I truly appreciate it.I have two questions:1: Can I add Red and Purple in same NAS ?(Background: I bought WD 6 TB purple drive for my security system NVR as an added storage however, after two weeks found out that NVR doesnt support more than 4TB added storage resulting in data crashing and requiring multiple format and resetting. Upon calling manufacturers they recommended to put 4TB instead. Which I will do soon. Now, I have this 6TB purple sitting and I do wanna use it in NAS SynologyDS218+ which already has 6TB Red).2: My car dash cam is with WiFi, is there any way recorded files automatically transferred to NAS once I park in garage and dash cam catches same network ?Thank you
Why should we not use Kodi ? I have a lot of videos on a WD my cloud that I stream to my TV and all our laptops using Kodi ! It's free ! & it works ! Easily ! So what is your problem with that ?
Can you make a comparison video on Ironwolf Pro vs WD Red Pro? Thanks!
