I personally love the straight peen over any other hammer. I only have two one I use more it’s a 2 lb I forged my self and it’s my favorite hammer to use. I use it 90% of the time. No clue why they are so rare. Great hammer to use. My other straight peen is a old modified splitting maul. I chopped an inch of the blade off and rounded than Cleaned the other side. It’s 9 lbs and my striking hammer Here are some pictures of my hammers. What about a cross peen hammer that has about a 1" diameter hole behind the handle hole on the peen side? What's the hole there for? Bending? It's got me puzzled.
Mixup tools do most used first , But pull soon off the wall knock the dust and show what we might need months ahead .Before we get stuck! Great job and again thanks Sir.

Judging from the comments it seems people are so happy with the videos it will be a small issue how the tool presentation is handled. Good idea to run it up the flagpole to see who salutes though. Now... more about hammers please.
I'm in favor of sticking to one catagory untill it is exhausted. then moving on to the next. It just is easier for me, & that is just my 2 cents worth. Thanks for All of The Videos John !!

Exhausting one tool might lead to viewer boredom. Viewers are fickle creatures. Too much in a lump may be too tough to swallow. Try mixing different tools and techniques and having it all available on your channel for the flighty to peruse at their convenience. Heaven forbid they get bored! Your first hand knowledge and experience makes this site once of the top 10 out there for blacksmiths seeking instruction and guidance. Regardless of the manner you introduce the material, most viewers appreciate and respect the opinions presented. Count me as one anyway. Go with what you think seems appropriate, don't agonize over the curriculum. Every vid I've seen has always had great points worth the time spent watching 😃
I think mixing it up a little will keep it more interesting and still provide useful information. but as someone else committed I'm gonna watch either way.
I think mixing it up works great, and then everything is on play lists for complete studies. Your videos are amazing!! Thank you for the excellent job you do in your teaching.

What about Hofi hammers?
Hey John, However you choose to do it, I think it would be good to add in something geared for the beginner. Like "if your just beginning, start with a hammer no more than 2 pounds." "Beginners, you don't have to have that $600 anvil. You can get away with ....." "These flat bit tongs are a good pair to start with". That type of thing so the beginner doesn't spend $150 on a custom made tool for a hobby they may not stay with. Than you for taking the time to make and share these videos. Rob
Shoot the videos to how they make sense to you and, as you go, organize them into play lists by tool group. That way months from now someone can "binge watch" Hammers if they desire or catch the shuffle of videos on different tools.
Maybe nice to see it mixed up a little
Always waiting on the next video, but if I have an option then I say finish each category before moving on. That way it would be easier to follow along and reference previous videos

Do you live in Canada or some other country ? Here in America .... time is money and you can pick one up pretty affordably at home depot, lowes, and most decent hardware stores... not hard to find in USA if ya know where to look
Dam, wouldn't buying the hammer be cheaper than the belts,40 years of welding and polishing consumables are very expensive.
Nice video. Being a blacksmith for 40 years I’ve made hammers and modified them like you did. After doing both why build a hammer when you can take an old hammer and modify it? Complete waste of time my friend. Also being a farrier or horseshoer I did build a driving hammer for nailing on horseshoes because there was none on the market that had the balance point where I wanted it. I would recommend building specialty tongs than hammers. I’ve even taken old horse shoeing shoe pullers and make specialty tongs as well. Also mix raw linseed oil and turpentine to soak the the handle prior to installing in the hammer. Your handle will never loosen. I soak the head of my hammers in this solution when not in use. At least an inch above the hammer head.

I've used a block of ice to cool down a blade when using a bench grinder.

This is exactly how this type of cross pein hammer (also called Warrington or joiners hammer) is used.  In the U.S. these hammers are very difficult to find. I had to order mine online.  Here in the U.S. cross peens are commonly used as blacksmith hammers.
Cross peen hammers are for metal working, they're meant to make the piece of metal you hit widen without lengthening as much.
