Spring Energy for “gels” and Skratch for hydration or liquid fuel (Superfuel). After a good bit of experimentation I’ve found that they really work for me.
Brilliant review Claire , I am all over the place with nutrition bars and energy bars and gels right now , but I agree with Erik that ginger is good and I will try more of it .
Interesting review I use IPro as it aids recovery quickly after a race or hard session. I dont take anything during workouts apart from water
In winter I find many energy bars that are soft in warm conditions set like concrete when it’s cold and therefore become inedible. Perhaps in a future review you could first have the energy bars in a fridge or even a freezer for a few hours before you test?
I love Picky Bars, which are tasty and vegan. I prefer chemical and coloring free products. That active root sounds great, I'll have to see if they ship to the USA.
I tried Unived gels and recovery drink. Just be warned that the gels are very watery and will spill out on to your hands and clothes if not careful. I found them a bit hard to tear open and always seem to get sticky fingers when out on a trail run. The sodium bicarbonate is an antacid that will help with stomach issues. The taste to me was was okay (I got the cherry and vanilla) but nothing special. I really did like the Coco Turmeric Latte recovery drink though. Thanks for the reviews Claire! Lately I've preferred hydration mix and energy chews by Skratch Labs (I don't know if you have them in the UK).
I prefer to just make them myself. Cheaper, easy to make and you can tailor them perfectly to your taste. Hardest part is finding a roll of that stuff which is making parchment on one side and tin foil on the other (for wrapping). In a pinch though, and with no other choice but to buy something, it's a Tunnocks' Bar all the way.
I got to say... the mountain fuel I got from you were so far amazing... so nice... not too claggy in my mouth while I run and the recovery stuff is fab.... Only one I wasnt a fan of was the cola flavoured gel... however I think it would be good on a fuel stop for a while... not while you run. Thanks again

The things I use the most are from Gu, when it comes to Gels but am really liking the sound of all the Unived stuff. As far as more solid nutrition I do like Bobo's Oat Bars out of Boulder Colorado, I have not yet run into any issues eating them before running and they keep me through longish runs of 2 hours without upsetting my stomach. I also do like the Maurten drinks (have not yet tried the gels) but they are pretty expensive - perhaps when racing becomes more prevalent I will give them anotehr go unless as I keep hoping to win the monthly drawing haha!

We all want Ginger ;-) Ginger is good, so more Ginger is even better :-D As I unfortunately have developed a nasty Lactoseintolerance, I'm happy to see, that I can handle the Active Root. It's an interesting way of getting gel. Time for a LockDown Gel-experiment run :-) I've used Unived a couple of times. I like them, but they have been hard to get here in Denmark. I use onle Unived and PowerBar PowerGel's because they have the same system for the tear-off top. I just HATE when people just drop that little top-piece on the run/bike ! If a gel company is conserned about the environment, they should use that system. Thanks for the review, Claire.
That gel solution is really good. I typically squeeze my SIS gels into the running soft bottles anyway, it’s easy and no litter on the trails. I will buy some and try this out.
I have sharp ears and I hope that isn't a cold Claire! I crave flapjack, next marathon I do my wife will have some on the course I hope! Gels too, but I realise you don't like them.
Do you like the Janji sling bag? Been thinking of getting one but wasn't sure.

I wish they would restock the Choco Fudge gel on Amazon. They are my absolute favorite.
I used Tailwind drink mix during my training for this years Chicago Marathon anytime I was running on the treadmill or when on long runs on the weekend and I took a hydration vest with me. I like it because everyone of the flavors are very mild and doesn’t taste overly sweet and for me is very easy on the stomach.
Nice review. I’m just starting with some Unived products. When I go on runs longer than 8mi I usually carry a small 8oz Gatorade and take swigs every mile or two. Would this be good for sipping throughout the workout? Maybe take a few Oz before the run, and take 8-10oz in sips during the run? Thx!

Would you recommend the Unived gels over SIS? I usually use a thicker all-natural gel when doing my long runs, but looking for something easier to take down during a half marathon race.

Tried a gel during a half-marathon race. Taste was awful. G32 gel, I think. Also, had a hydration mix. Overdid the caffeine intake and ended up with massive stomach cramps. Will stick with one or the other next time. Or one with caffeine, one not. Thanks for the tip!
“Ice blue” lol. Being an older runner, many of these products taste like colonoscopy prep drinks to me!
I just started to drink Unived (coconut turmeric flavor) my first time after a long run (16miles) and second time during my long run (20miles) which worked better for me. Flavor is good and I don’t if it’s mentally but my performance was better. Now I also take GU gels every 5 miles. Do you think it’s ok to mix both during a long race? I just took a 8oz bottle with it and the gu gels. But I’m planning to take 2 bottles of 8oz of Unived and my husband gels every 5 miles for my next marathon. What do you think? Thanks in advance. I'm testing these at the moment also and will do a review also! They seem pretty good for ultras (higher cals, easy to consume) Same as you though as the temps get colder and the fact I'm not racing now until next year. Your views were interesting.
