I've ordered one but can I just ask, what is the purpose of this and the star nut. Do they help prevent back and forth play on the forks?
Thanks for that!!! Here in Brazil we don't have tutorial s like this! Aprecciate it!
Flip the stem, drop out three spacers, cut the steerer down and drop the expander in lower! Easy!
Thanks for the video. Where did you buy your expansion plug?
some good info, thanks
Ur cables yow WTF
hey man, i have installed it but it got stuck and can't remove it. do you have any tips on how to get it off please?
You make more complicated. U can use thinner headspacer just push down more the expan plug. Lol
i appreciate you providing this information.....but that stem/fork assembly looks pretty frankenstein
When do I need a extra long cap expander? Is it fine with spacers under the stem 2-4cm but a expender that only covers the stem? My DIY bike comes with a expander but it will only cover for the stem, not the rest of the steer-tube down to the upper bearing.. Is that ok? 😚
The length is 50mm, but what is the diameter before it's expanded in the steerer tube
thanks for the video now i understand how the system works
Too bad quill stems were eliminated in favor of this design, so called threadless steerers. The buying public can be sold anything. Never had to deal with any of this sh-t. Worst of it is carbon steerers. And particularly for road bikes, another waste was thru hubs. Planned obsolescence at its best, and the buying public even defend these so called improvements. Don’t get me started on carbon rims and their disc brake adoption as a belt and suspenders safety lawsuit avoidance solution.
BTW, your videos are my favorite. I LOVE (L.O.V.E) the level of details you provide. All the other video producers should take a page out of your approach. Thanks.
Bikeblogger!! Thank you so much for this video. I was having a hard time and this video changed the entire outlook of my weekend. I typically leave headset bottom bracket work to the pros but with bakeshops overwhelmed in NYC my area I didn't want to go multiple days without riding my bike!! Learned something new, and now I get to go for a ride!!!
I just purchased a new carbon gravel bike at my local bike store here in tacoma, WA. It's a carbon bike, so obviously it has a carbon fork and steerer tube. Since the OEM aluminum alloy Easton EA70 stem was bit too long for me, I purchased a shorter one (still an Easton EA70 but 80 mm long instead of the original 100 mm long one).   What I noticed as I was swapping out the stems is that the bike had been set up by the store with the top of the carbon steerer tube well below the level of the upper stem clamp - about 5 -7 mm below. They just placed the top cap on that and sold it. From what I heard you say in this video, that's not a good thing - the top edge of the carbon steerer tube can fray and even crush due to uneven compression by the overriding stem clamp. And the worst of it all is that I now need to lower my stem to prevent steerer tube damage - which will mess up the bike's ergonomics for me. I don't want a lower bar height than there already is. But what else can I do? So disappointed in the LBS.   Thanks for opening my eyes, though; better safe than sorry.
I have a 1" full carbon fork but will be using a 1 1/8" stem with a shim. Confused as to what type of compressor plug to use, 1" because of the steerer, but what about the top of the stem? Would you happen to know?
Can it also be used for mtb suspension forks with steel steering tube?
I wish I had looked at this before I started adjusting my Cannondale headset!! Thank You...it explains where I went wrong.
So it’s a “star nut” for carbon fiber
Have you ever had to change your bike's compression plug?
if I only put one 10mm spacer on top I should be fine, right? or should I get a longer expansion plug?
Will a compression plug work on a aluminum steerer tube?
Good video. A traditional stem and spacer setup may have been a better choice since it would be more relatable to more people.
Carbon sucks. Alloy is much better
Bro how did a crazy starnut went in my carbon fork??
Hello, i've had problems recently with my steerer plug. Addict RC, 2021 (1"1/4 steerer) even with some carbon paste, torqued at the right torque, my expended slips into the steerer tube while i screw the compression screw on the top cap... I don't want to over tighten it! It's like if it can't grip enough on the inside of the steerer tube, gives some play on the head tube, not ideal!
The 6Nm on the top cap is the FINAL max torque AFTER you have set your bearing preload and secured the stem bolts. The max headset preload is 2Nm. Maybe try reading the assembly manual of this or any modern carbon bike before you instruct everyone in how to crush headset bearings and potentially damage the bearing seats of their expensive carbon frames.🤬😡🤬😡
I’ve crushed 2 Felt Carbon steerer tubes and 2 carbon seat posts on 2 Felt VR’s at it’s recommended 6Nm torque specs. Torque was checked to be correct with 2 Park tool torque wrenches. I’d recommend starting with 4-5Nm on carbon bikes
Can I use an aluminum compression plug on a carbon tube?
Can a normal star nut fit in a carbon fork?
thank you for detailed video. I plan to replace the form on electric mtb and wonder which one is better to use starnut or the Compression Plug ?
thanks i realised my bottom bit for the plug dropped in my fork lol
Its manons bike
can you use compression plug to an aluminum steerer tube? newbie question
Thanks for this video, I just bought my first bike carbon bike with a a carbon steerer and wanted to adjust the spacer stack. I took the bars and stem off and encountered my first compression bung. "WTF is that??!!" I thought. Manual said adjustment requires "specialist tools" and that I need to take it to a LBS. I can see now by "specialist tools" they meant a torque wrench...
The top cap is for setting the preload in the headset bearings, 6nm may not sound much but could easily damage the bearings. Also although the clamp bots have a nm setting it's better to use an alan tool first to get equal loading through the bolts, ie done one bolt so it just tightens then the other, then use the torque tool.
tq for the info
Omg thank you so much
6 or 8 NM aint much.
