How To Install Inline Cable Barrel Adjusters
How to use the barrel adjuster for cable brakes, v brake and side rim.
Jagwire Inline Cable Adjusters - Installation and Adjustment - Bicycle Maintenance
The derailleurs barrel adjuster is the "goto" for the common problems.
For more bike repair videos hit the subscribe button and click the notification bell they also be used for brake cables? I have an MTB -> Gravel conversion with V-brakes and those break pads tend to wear extremely quickly. I cannot adjust the pads as I'd do it on the MTB break levers but I've to loosen the cable at the break cantilevers and fit them again in a different position. Being able to adjust them using such a cable adjuster would be such a relief!
Thanks RJ! Needed to see this to confirm that I had mine installed in the right direction. Was hoping youd address it directly but was able to confirm by watching. Much appreciated!!
Hi RJ the bike guy, my mtb to gravel bike conversion, the FD doesnt have any barrel adjuster. My mechanic just tunes it up by with limiting screws.I suggested to him if we can use inline barrel adjusters like here in this video, he said it doesnt work ot make any singificance. I havent tried it but, is this true? Or would it depend on the brand used? I honestly dpnt get the context as to why he said it doesnt work
Is there a way to install it without replacing the cable?
Thank you!
Super helpful. Thank you!
Yep we're still watching and learning in 2021. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Can a v brake not have barrel adjusters? Im converting my folding into drop bars and the v brake will lose barrel adjusters, I will probably get after market in lines in the future but will a bike work without them?
Is this also working on a RD with no barrel adjuster?
Another great video. Thanks
Which way do I install the adjuster, RJ? All the way closed? Open? Half way? Thanks for the video! You make it look so easy...
You saved my day. I bought a road bike and couldn't find a Spanish explanation of this but yours was so clear... Great video. Thank you.
what are those black thing i think my cable adjuster dont have those what are they called so i can order them
Where can i find those RSX Hoods?
Beautiful! One of my winter projects is to replace my down tube friction shifters with brifters, and this is just the ticket! Thanks!
Hey RJ, great Video as always. I have a question regarding the Barrel adjusters. I am also working on a mtb to gravelbike conversion (fun fact: the object is also a Trek Bike). When i installed cables and housings I experienced exactly this Problem of missing adjustment Options for the FD. I already ordered some Barrel adjusters for shifting cables.I See from the bike in the vid that it also has canti brakes installed. Since my trek had the adjustment screws on the brake levers itself I am now also lacking fine adjustment Options for the brakes.I found out that there are also Barrel adjusters for 5mm Housings (that should be compatible with brake cables I guess) but I have never seen them on any bike ever.Do you have experience with that Barrel adjusters for brake cables? Do they work the same way?How did you adjust the tension of the canti brakes on that bike (adjustment on the clamp?).CheersNico
RJ you have always been Bikeknowledgable and very unselfish in sharing them to the public. Thank you.
Do you have a video on how a barrel adjuster works? Great videos!!!
You have an easy to understand video for every situation I come up against. Keep up the great work. I'll keep watching.
My cable, the black protector outer layer comes out of my barrel adjuster, so when I pull in on my break lever it gets caught up because its bending, my barrel adjuster isnt doing anything because it isnt in contact with ut
excellent video and description! thank you
The ferrule at the end of my rear brake cable will not stay locked in the barrel adjuster near the rear brake lever. How do I correct that? Thank you
Do you have a similar tutorial for disc brakes?
Hey there are 2 amount of barrel adjuster in the cable ,are they works the same?
Hello, thanks for informative video. However, I still have one question: the lock ring of barrel adjuster I got doesn't thread in to securely fixed position while I am turning barrel adjuster outward to get more tension on the cable. I assume, that the threads could be worn out ? Also, I noticed that the brake lever has a little bit more play compared to the other one (the cable and housing is brand new). So, what is possible to do if the lock ring gets twisted while trying to tight it ?
Well explained. Thank you.
Thanks! your video was just the content i was looking as guidance.
Great video but the barrel adjuster is called " This Guy" ? Eh?
Great job explaining this. Thank you!
Thank you very much for this tutorial explanation. Very much non intuitive from righty tighty for more tention you go the opposite way, and then use the lock ring. Bike servicing is very fiddly but now I have the understanding to adjust my brakes and derailleur with more knowledge and certainty, thanks again.
whats the difference between a 7mm and 10mm barrel adjuster ?
thanks !!
Great tutorial. Very clear and easy to follow. Thanks.
either your brake pads/brake shoes are touching the rim/disc or your wheelhub is seriously worn...the spin resistance is insane on your backwheel.
great. thank you so much
thanks bro:-)
That's what she said
Boy am I grateful for this vid! Just moved to STIs with hidden shifter cables and needed to see how these inline regulators work. Cheers!
...or just add ferrule to the adjuster and go into the shifter..? Wouldn't seem to need that bit of cable
Jagwire now includes a short male to male cable housing to allow you to install the barrel adjuster pretty close to the shifter (old shifter style like in the video only).
Good job
good stuff oil helps well too :)
How often is it normal to increase the tension in the derailleur cable? I have a new KTM bike, and the tension in the back derailleur needs an adjustment every 2-3 hours of riding, if i shift the gears often. That means the chain starts to fall from a larger to a smaller pinion, especially while I climb a slope. Or shifting to a larger pinion gets difficult. So, is it normal that the derailleur cable needs more tension every 2-3 hours, in these condition?
all explained nicely
Isnt this what the L-screw and H-screw are for? How do I know whether to adjust the screws or the barrel adjusted? They seem like theyre both designed to correct the same problem?
Please correct me if I am wrong.Function of adjuster near shifter:Moving anti-clockwise tightens the cable and help in shifting to bigger cogs.Moving clockwise will loosen the cable and help in shifting to smaller cogs. And this is just opposite when one is trying to do with the adjuster near the derailleur.
Just what I needed to get my deore xt drivetrain running better! Thank you sir.
I accidentally backed it all the way out and it fell out.
Hi, I'm rotating my rear barrel adjuster counter clockwise but cable is not tightening. It's not disengaged too though, so I'm not sure what's happening here.
Thank you soo much mate
I would like to give a big shout out to you thank you so much well explained you taught me how to use my barrel adjusters on my brakes thank you so much I didn't know what I was doing now I do thanks to you I appreciate you I definitely like your page and I hope you have more to come stay blessed
So clearly explained, thank you!!
When i did this the barral adjuster fell off and it did not make thr move to the bigger chainring
How can i fix stuck barrel adjuster even when i turn it it the cable doesnt move
You are probarly not responding to comments anymore but ill give it a tryI got a bike not too long ago and the gears are a little jump and it does work to unscrew the barrel adjuster to make the cable tighter but the problem is whenever i jump, do a wheelie, or simply just hit a bump it moves down aka screwing in itself. So do you have any tips to make it stop moving. And incase you wanna know the bike is a merida big nine15. Thanks in advance
My front gear barrel adjuster in not going inside or outside , its just rotating on its axis. What to do?
Does sitting on the bike matter
Thanks Bike Teacher! Awesome vid. Well explained at a good pace. Cheers!
Thanks you so much
This is really helpful, thank you!
Extremely helpful, exactly what I needed to smooth out my new cable. Thanks!
