Nice overview. I like the recommendation for J-bend, stainless steel, double-butted, rolled-thread spokes. Good availability, very high tensile (and fatigue) strength, lightweight, and at a low price depending on brands and your region. Wheelsmith is a good spoke brand in the USA. Some of the boutique brands offer ultra-lightweight spokes made of titanium, carbon fiber, or synthetic fibrous ropes; however, usually the price points of these spokes do not justify the minimal weight savings that you can achieve with them versus a quality double-butted stainless steel spoke.

How about spokes gauges? Is it okay to use a thinner spokes (higher g) if you have a wider rims?
I had Mavic X-717 26" rims with straight gauged spokes, 32 hole. After a few years of city commuting, and light duty trails my rims developed crack at most of the nipples. What causes this? I never did any down hilling or jumps. Was it a bad wheel build or is the Mavic rim cheap junk?
