I'm using it on Nikon d3300, Cons: 1) I can't use a wide aperture, in fact the only aperture I can use is f/22. If I try using a wider aperture the lens doesn't work. Please clarify is this the fault with the camera or is it bcoz of a rare faulty lens 2) autofocus doesn't work on d3300 Pros: sharp & budget friendly macro lens

I didn't realise those 1000 series DX bodies were so tiny, my D300s and D700 with battery packs seem like monsters by comparison!

Hi Frederik i received the lens today and tried it on my Nikon D7100 and initially all was fine ! I must have removed it and refitted later the same day and i was getting a f e e error and the shutter would'nt fire. Rang the supplier but in the meantime i found your video and had a derrrrr moment when you mentioned that the aperture ring must be set to highest f number before fitting lens to body. I did that and hey presto it works - manual and auto so thanks very much. Maybe the supplier would have put me straight about this but you definitely have. It's nearly as powerfull as a scanning electron microscope ! Beautifull crisp images. Sorted. Thank you.

Compared with the excellent, but now low-tech, aging Tokina, the Micro Nikkor 105 f/2.8G is also a great lens. It has an internal SW Auto-Focus motor, internal focussing (no extension of the front element) AND vibration reduction. The Sigma 105 f/2.8 DG EX OS (made in Japan) has all of those things, but is now substantially cheaper than the Nikkor - similar in price to the Tokina. The Sigma is also a tad sharper than both the Tokina and the Nikkor, but the difference is minuscule in real-world shooting . Great build quality too. Your choice!
Just opened it today and tried it out in my I must admit, I'm a little confused. I'm using it with a I can't get it to shoot at F2.8! I've had other prime lenses, such as a 50mm 1.8, and regardless of what I'm shooting, it will stay at whatever aperture I set it at. This one jumps all over the place depending on how far away I am from my subject (or so it seems) and almost never will let me shoot at 2.8! That's one of the main reasons I got this lens. What am I missing?

On my D810 this lens seems to almost always over expose by about 3/4 stop. I think it’s T stop value is not accurate to the f stops.

hey i want a lens that's great in low light if this is the only lens i need then i want to buy one. and if the auto focus is fast then that's great. i have a canon 400d 10.1 megapixels and the lens on there is alright but i want something better than my tamron 18-200. if the lens is great in low light and have a fast auto focus then i need to jump on that. what do you think about the tamron 15-30 i love that one. and what you think about the tamron 85mm lens. like you said i want a lens that i can do everything with. i never knew there was a full frame camera so i want to buy me a full frame camera and what do you think about the canon 6d and i want the canon 80d and that's it. 3 cameras is all i need and 4 lens 1. tamron 35-150 2. tamron 15-30 3. canon 50mm 4. tamron 85mm tell me what you think about everything i said

Did you ever try the Laowa 60mm or 100mm Macro (both with 2x magnification) and woud you recommend any of those over the Tokina. Or is there any other (affordable) Option to consider for Nikon F mount (Aps-c)? Would you say that the Tokina is a viable option for free hand macro even if it doesn't have image stabilization? Thank you for this very good video. I am always interested in a sample human face being shot for lenses around focal length 85 to 135mm. From my experience, the Nikon 105 2.8 seems to do a good job with human faces- I am not talking only about sharpness, but the overall three-dimensional depiction of the face.

No portrait comparison
Nice overview. The differences in DoF are not explained by the 5mm difference in focal length. I would guess it is however explained by significant focus breathing. As an old Nikon user, CA has been my recurring nag and having moved to Z, that is about completely gone. What most camera users (to avoid the word photographer ;) ) do not know, is that lenses generally are optimized for sharpness at infinity. Floating elements and internal focusing have changed this general ptinciple, though. Macro/makro/micro lenses are optimized for close distance. So you might find that the 105/2.8 micro Nikkor gives a nicer looking portrait than, say, a 105/1.4 (albeit the person in the portrait might wish for less detail .).
To me, it seems that you had a little missfocus on Tokina on second and third photo. At second shot it was at the dragon nose area and on the third one it seems it is sharper on lower part of "2" number. Anyways difference on those two are so small in IQ, the Tokina is better price wise. Of course VR might come in handy for others as well as bit sure close range AF on Nikon. In the review, I maybe miss the performance at F32 and diffraction kick. Great review overall. Thanks for video. :)

I've got the Nikon VR version - Sorry! When might you want the VR? If you use your macro as a portrait lens and you want to hand-hold some natural light portraits at speeds below 1/125th maybe.
Im using a d5300. So no built in motor. How important is auto focus for macro? Is there an alternate auto focus lens you'd recommend?
