You can make any kit sound good with some new heads, cymbals are a different situation

I am in the process of buying a beginner drum sets for my 12 yrs old son. Your video gave me some idea, but do you have a more recent video? I did not want to buy a drum set that was costly because I'm no sure if my son will continue playing with drums. Do you have any suggestions for other brand name drum sets for beginners?

I would not recommend the Yamaha. My school has that kit and the crash pad shorts out and the pads keeps falling off.

I got a Ludwig Jr kit for $200, and didn't REPLACE jack. I just TWEAKED what it already had. (I reduced, mostly: ditched the adorablefloor tom, the cymbal stands, the reso heads and rims [my goal was to make it as minimal and light and quiet and tight as possible, to play outdoors]. I cable-tied two DRUMSTICKS to the mounted toms, as Cymbal Stands (!) and did add a Dollar Tree Plastic Vase ("cowbell") via cable-ties. It was ugly black so I took GOLD holographic ductape ($1!) and cut it into diamondshapes and afixed on all the shells. I taped the heads a bit too with this cool trippy tape to mute stuff, and my kit sounds INCREDIBLE. I added a couple small cymbals too. I really dislike waste, as well. I never ever break guitar strings, and I never break drumsticks or drumheads! I may be the lightest-touch drummer on earth, b/c i practice outdoors using rods. This video OFFENDED me as well!

I gave my son my kit from when I was in high school a Ludwig supraphonic and a Ludwig green sparkle with a 22kick 12tom 18floor and paiste 2002 17 crash 20 crash and 22ride my gosh I got that used for 500 dollars back in the day and know it seems paiste 2002 and Ludwig are very pricey now

Reworked this kit as follows: replaced both pedals with adult sized pedals and 14" Camber hats, longer legs on the floor tom, negated the 8" tom and shifted the 10" to the left, used right hand mount for adding cymbal boom for 18" Camber Crash/Ride, inverted 12" Wuhan China on cymbal stand, replaced all heads, and finished with a lightweight adult Ludwig throne. Great for quick rehearsals & smaller venues without overpowering other instruments. I've had Breakbeats before, but I prefer these after the modifications. $30 at Goodwill for the original kit and less than $150 worth of leftover parts made this into a really fun set. These are currently on Craigslist in Southern West Virginia under musical instruments for $200 as a local, cash only sale.

If you buy this and you remove the hihats and crash and replace them with good ones its the best drum set

Hey! Great video. Was just wondering, do you find it awkward drumming on it though? In the sense that the junior set is a little small and low haha. I recently bought a pdp player 5-piece junior set, (was thinking of a canopus but it was too damned costly; and space constraints) and I haven't finished setting it up, but I straight away found that it's a little small.

The tom-toms sound almost like timbales. Or marching tenor drums. Very cool.
I bought this kit after watching this video. I taped an X on the bottom heads and tuned them as low as they could go and it sounds great. Great kit for coffee house gigs and such.

Throw those dreadful excuses for cymbals into the trash. The rest of the kit has a tiny bit of promise but not with those cymbals.
