The bridge as structure - Industry Insights: Bridge Engineering with Ian Firth Pt 3
Bridge components (terminology). Beam bridge, structural engineering, civil engineering
It is such a pity that the elegance of the old catenary suspension bridges have an inherent stability if the deck is not solid enough, The Tacoma narrow bridge went into an oscillation because the vertical suspension wires from the catenary holding the deck did not contain a single triangle and so due to its length the deck started flexing and oscillating. If one examines the catenary bridge as in 0:.49 the only triangular form is obtained by the considering the attachment of the catenary at the centre of the bridge. This centre point is reasonable stable and so the fundamental mode half wavelength cannot be supported. The full wavelength can be supported however and this is the mode that was excited at the Narrow Tacoma Bridge. If the designers added another thinner cable running from the top of the tower to one quarter of the length of the bridge, the full wavelength mode would have been eliminated and using two more triangles the higher modes would be eliminated too. The very higher mode would have not been possible due to the solidity of the deck structure over a short length.Another manner to stabilize the catenary bridge is to run cables from the junction of where the deck meets the tower and go upwards towards the catenary thick cable to meet it somewhere about one quarter length of the bridge from the tower. This would not permit the thick cable to swing up. A few more cables from the mentioned junction running upwards to stabilise the first few modes of oscillation of the catenary curve itself would have saved the day at the Tacoma Bridge. I would even go as far a s saying that they had plenty of time to do it as the vibration was noticed about one month before it fell, and one month was long enough to brace the catenary curve down to eliminate the harmonic that destroyed it.
Fascinating subject
Hi, The URL seems not to be working. Neither does it shows in any of the upcoming courses.

Thank you for your inspiring advise & knowledge sharing
A very inspiring and knowledgeable video session for the future Bridge engineers
A masterclass.
so fking good video
Ah, it is very easy to build a bridge, just do not let it bend or hog between columns, sag on one column nor twist, nor oscillate in any way. Avoid using parallel elements as in squares or parallelograms but apply triangular or zig zag structures where ever you can. Learn about forces due to vortex shedding in fluid mechanics and damp any three dimensional movements that may occur due to elasticity in materials. Learn about effects of dissimilar metals close together, creeping, rusting and paint and protection, and permanent and non permanent joints. Store potential energy in a bridge, but never let it change into kinetic energy, nor chemical, nor electric energy. Make sure to earth or ground the Bridge. Consider the safety factor required if the bridge is hit by an airbus A 380 or a Boeing 707.To build up experience from the experts, watch spiders building webs, beavers building dams and birds building nests of all types, and ants and monkeys dangling together to bridge gaps or swinging from tree to tree on flexible branches.Watch the structures of four legged animals forming arches and lintels, Giraffes for cantilevered necks, the wings of birds could be an inspiration to build bridges if you consider a loaded wing and turn it upside down. If one wants to go deeper into analysis of bridges learn whey horses when trotting cantering and galloping do it in a particular manner while Giraffes and camels move their legs in a different manner. Nature has been building bridges for a long time, but we have not been able to make anything as strong as the web of a spider not anything that can take so many reversals as the muscle or tendons.
Nice!
Nice! Keep them coming!
