The fact is you will never get it cleaned up I am from this place raised by miners of the Anaconda company and watched the demise of the local economy when the company stopped mining the richest hill on earth.
Shutting the pumps off was the absolute stupidest decision EVER made..
I remember seeing the Berkeley Pit when we came down for our 8th grade history trip in 1982 and I remember seeing one of those giant trucks sitting down there by a tiny pond, when in actuality, this stuff was HUGE in size. Amazing!

I do not doubt the Captain's credentials or his honesty or integrity or his competence. I believe the Captain. But I want to know who signs his paycheck and who funds his research. And it's pretty smug to assert that the water level in the pit will never reach the critical level because "9 points of compliance sites" are going to keep that from happening. Hogwash! The technology specific to the Berkeley pit environment hasn't been tested, and even if the pumps start and run, run for how long?. A previous pump was destroyed by a slough and abandoned. And who's funding the operation of the pumps at the compliance sites? And that's "perpetual funding" being promised by the Captain, right? With, what, corporate sponsors? Perpetual funding even if we elect conservative legislators and a conservative administration that guts the budget for spending to protect the environment? My money is on the pit, and Butte will be left to deal with its own acid Katrina just as New Orleans was abandoned.
