have anybody used this with one of the canon r cameras? thinking of getting one second hand for thr R6
amazing review thank you
Hi Chris, thanks for the review. My copy of this lens arrived last week, and I have to say, so far I´m blown away with it. It's built like a tank, and the autofocus is snappy. The image stabilization is great, and the images it produces are sharper than a surgeon's scalpel. I bought it from Adorama, who threw in the Tamron Tap-in Console for nothing, which is cool. As $649 is an absolute fortune for me, hardly was the lens out of its box than I slapped on a (Tiffen) UV filter, simply to protect the front glass. Do you think this would have an effect on the image quality, however slight?
Thanks for the video. These are very helpful.
The LiveView AF issues belong entirely to the 6D, not the lens. It's the camera that is unsure of itself due to a less than par live AF protocol.
Hi Chris! Thanks for your review. I am a bit confused about the diffraction that you observed from f16 considering that the lens can be stopped down to f64. Why? It should be utterly soft, should not it?
Of all the macro lenses I've searched, I like this the most and the one from canon with built in light. Still cant decide hahaha
Has anyone used both lenses please. I got the G2 Tamron 15 - 30 and just love the build quality. The Canon 100mm arrived today and I was just going to return it because I just didn’t like how that long thin lens felt against my camera. Then I put the lens on and tested it - the image was just beautiful.
I don’t think I can get myself to return it now but I’m guessing I will prefer the 90mm for portrait / macro over the longer 100mm.
Can someone that has used both PLEASE let me know.
If you are able to get both at similar price - will you be ok getting the Tamron 90 macro or is it the canon? Why?
Thanks
Shalom Christ my tamron 90mm f2.8 f017,if the VC is on, there is an audible sound during AF and after the picture is taken. Is that normal?
Thank you for excellent review Bro Christ
Thinking of replacing my Canon EF 85mm 1.8 USM and already sold Tokina 100mm Macro 2.8 with this unit.
You should have shot some bugs with it instead of this wooden dolphin.
As probably mentioned elsewhere - this lens is COMPLETELY BROKEN with Nikon Z cameras. Tamron has thus far (2 years!) not been able to offer a firmware fix for this lens. BE VERY CAREFUL WILL ALL TAMRON LENSES ON Z BODIES. Step up your game Tamron!
Always brilliant reviews Chris - thank you
Is it fixed with sony A7ii?
Can I use this in my sony a6000 ?
Would u recommend this lens to shoot fast moving betta fishes?
What would you recommend? This lens or a laowa 100mm 2x magnification?
I’m really liking what this little package offers. It seems to be a strong contender for the money, though I am concerned about one thing; compatibility with classic SLR cameras. I intend to primarily use this with my mirrorless and DSLR cameras, but if I could mount it on my older Canon EOS 55 Elan II 35mm camera, that would be a dream! Any pointers, or am I out of luck?
Maybe i'm late, but could you tell me how this lens perform on rhe aps c body, when shoot close up images? What is tge details resolutiin? Is it comparable ro your sony a7mk iii? Thank for the reviem btw. Ir's really helpful and well done. Keep up this kind of work.
Thanks for the info!
First of all, you mean all of all let's talk about macro and f. the Tamron
I've just got mine today! I can't wait to get out and put it through its paces.
Hi Matt! I am looking for a GOOD macro lens, either for a Nikon D850, or a Sony A7R4 body. I know that you are not into Sony much, but I trust your experience more than many of the Sony funboys. I used to have a Nikon 105/2.8 macro, but I scrapped it.
Thoughts: the D850 can do automated focus brackets, while the A7R4 has higher MP, has an IBIS and no need for AF fine-tuning as opposed to the DSLRs. I prefer AF and hence noticed the Tamron SP 90/2.8 for the D850. I have a couple of Tamron SP glasses and I think they are pretty good. Do you think there are any other options for the D850? For the Sony body, the Sigma 105/2.8 DG DN is optically outstnding, but the AF is crap, the Sony 90/2.8 is optically excellent, but 2x more expensive than the Tamron SP 90/2.8, others do not seem to really play. Would you share your advise?
Scharf, schärfer, am schärfsten Das Objektiv natürlich
I Can't Believe this is a 2020 video.
I want to know Tamron A17E 70-300 f/4-5.6 DI LD Macro is it useful for micro photography?
Hello Dustin and thank you for this comprehensive and objective comparison. But in the end, which one do you use? the Canon or the Tamron?
Hi Dustin. I had already seen this review some time ago but wanted to refresh my old opinion. I am curious that this video says "Final Review" but in your playlist I do not get any additional video of the ones you usually do. Does that video exist? Thank you.
HI Dustin - thanks for the review. I know it has been posted quite some while ago, I am wondering if this lens is still the best choice for Nikon DSLRs if the best available optical quality is looked for.
Thanks Dustin!
Is it better than tokina 100mm f 2.8?
Hey Dustin. New subscriber here. I have found the oldest version of this lens (Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO1:1 Model 272E) for $180 which seems like a steal. I have found the new version (F017) for $360. Both new. Which one would you go for?
Hi Dustin. I've been dabbling in Macro photography with extension tubes (on a 50 mm prime), and I'm seriously eyeing up this lens to be used on a crop sensor, but I´ve heard talk about focus breathing with it. I shoot Canon, and their 100 mm macro L is pretty expensive for me, though I'd consider a second hand one. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

,if the VC is on, there is an audible sound during AF and after the picture is taken. Is that normal?
Is it fit with sony A7ii?
why are you so angry?
Very nice review as always Dustin! I'm on the market now for a macro lens for my old Canon EOS 550D. I'm on the fence between this Tamron 90mm vs Sigma 105mm. Both have excellent reviews and they are almost similarly priced. I hope you can help me with this decision. Thank you very much!
Dustins reviews always make me want to immediately buy the lenses. So happy there are these really informative videos on Tamron. Bang for Buck they are the best lenses
Hi, thank you for the review. May I ask a question? Can this lens be adapted to use with eos M50?
Hi Justin - Can I ask a question please? I have just purchased this lens and am very happy with one reservation. When framing a shot - with AF & VC activated - if I release the shutter button (e.g. to reframe the shot) the image in my viewfinder shifts position slightly. This doesn't happen when VC is off so I assume the problem is related to the VC mechanism? Are you aware of this issue? Not sure if this is a malfunction but any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Allan.
Hello Mr Abbott, thanks for this review, I would like to know if this lens suffers fron Focus Shift.Thank you
I just got this lens yesterday, after a lot of research (including your video.thank you). I noticed on one of the pieces of literature included with the lens was the admonition not to try to manually focus while the lens is in auto focus mode, at the risk of damaging the lens. But elsewhere in the instructions it said the manual focus ring could be used whether in AF or MF. Do you have a thought on this?
Thanks.
I have the 70-300 mm by Tamron, and it is a SUPERB lens! The VC is incredible when "stuck" with handheld. When looking for a lens to add to my kit, I look for Tamron first. As a Nikon shooter, I have the Nikon 50mm1.4, bought with my first body, and Tokina wide angle zoom, and 2 Tamrons for now. Looking to add this Macro to my arsenal for product work.
Does it have constant Aperture 2.8 at all focusing distances? Heard otherwise from other reviewers. If no, will this be an issue? Thanks in advance Dustin
Did you compare this to Canon 100 2.8 IS lens?
Dustin, have you stopped making videos? I have not seen any new videos from you lately.
This tamron lens 90mm can support NIKON d7500 . I have NIKON d7500 . So can use this . Please tell me sir
I bought this lens for my Canon crop sensor DSLR. First impressions: it's built like a tank; it looks and feels like a quality precision instrument. Second, the autofocus seems to be lightning quick. Third, the image stabilization is tremendous. I don't know if it was just luck (it probably was), but I actually got a sharp hand-held shot at 1/6th of a second, not at macro distances, I must add. The lens makes a few clicks and whirrs when you fire up the image stabilization, but I have to have my ear right next to it to hear them, so, as far as I´m concerned, it operates silently. I live in a low-income country, so putting out the cash for this lens, for me, was a big decision. When it arrived, and it got it out of the box and tried it out, I was blown away: no regrets! I got it from Adorama, who threw in the Tamron Tap-in console for free, which is pretty cool.
One of the best reviews of a lens I’ve seen on YouTube. Wasn’t a generic marketing review like some of the more popular accounts
This video deserves more likes!
I ordered the F004 version yesterday for $400. Hopefully its worth it and performance well like this version also!
Hello Mr , thanks for this review, I would like to know if this lens suffers fron Focus Shift.Thank you
Hi sir ,which one is best lens between Nikon 105mm macro vstemron sp 90mmvc macro
Finally, a video that explained what I was looking for! I’m a canon user but I bought a Nikon d850 and this exact lens and I was wondering why I couldn’t control my aperture to go lower when I was close to an object. I do have one for canon which I will be returning because I noticed an issue with compability with my canon 5d mk I’ve but before I do that I’m going to definitely test out this theory to see if it is true that it’s the same aperture
please help me. i just bought also one Tamron 90,and when i shaking it,it makes inside some weird noise. Is that noise also to you? i posted one video here to hear it. thank you
you used a Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro as well? If yes, which one do you prefer? Canon 100L or Tamron 90 F017? And why?
Great tutorial. Love it. By the way, what would you recommend for a Nikon D5500 lens use for both Portraiture and close up (macro) shoot (photography and videography)? is there a lens that suit both scenario for my camera? also for the macro extension tube, what would you recommend for my Nikon D5500? Thanks in advance.
very thorough review man. good stuff
Any one can tell if this one will work on a7rii with La ea 3?, and it is sharper or equal to the rokinon 100mm?, thanks
I brought this lense recently but I was disappointed when I came to know that it is not a full time f2.8 Lene, the fstop value changes by itself depending upon the focus range, and can't fix f2.8 , is this common? or it a defect of Lene. Thanks in advance for your answer
Also, other reviews suggest that the Sigma 105mm w/HSM is sharper and better overall. Anybody share that opinion from their ownership or research?
Virtually all the sample pictures shown were soft. Some, very few, showed sharp.
I have a HD screen and other reviews, including Matt Granger pictures were sharp.
Great review.
my question is can I use this lens for my Nikon D7100?
great review man thanks you so much!
Nice review. How does it compare against the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 lens? At half the cost, why should one consider the Tamron over the Tokina?
great review
