For some reason, it does not play music when I connect it with my laptop through 3.5 mm jack. Do I have to tinker with the settings anywhere? My laptop already defaults to speaker/line output when a jack is connected. My cable works fine with other devices.

Your review is absolutely biased and it seems that you have no knowledge of accoustics at all. I am using this speaker for more than 3 years and it has a very good bass. You need to place a speaker near wall to have a good bass response. In addition you should download a good equalizer app in your mobile device for increasing the bass.

A good speaker also needs a good amp, use it with a laptop or mobile with dedicated audio chip. U can hear the difference.
