Spoiler alert its awesome.
Amazing photo at 5:18, I would be so proud of that one. Honestly never seen a picture like exactly like that.
Small and light over lens speed.
I tested it at a rental place for lens, and i wanted to see how it compares to my old zeiss pancolar adapted to e-mount, i couldn't see much difference, at 1.8 is better tho, but the CA took me by surprise and the minimum focus distance too, so basically I was getting only AF. I liked it but. I couldn't get that 100% sure sensation to buy it
Was $600 used for great condition a good deal?
What Sony lens for the A7iii would you recommend for shooting workout videos and also shooting someone talking with a green screen behind them?
what a beautiful Place
sony doesnt near rubber gaskets on the lens mount. in rainy conditions, the camera will be dead way before the mount leaks.
would you say that this is an everyday lens as an only lens to have or to add a 24-105 f4 make an amazing 2 lens duo ?
It's a nice lens, but at 55mm it's too zoomy for me. 50mm would have been perfect.
90 mm 2.8 or 55 mm 18. which lens is better for portrait?
when you guys learn that maximum sharpness not come to f1.8 or f2.8.
Is image stabilization inbuilt?
Lol you just knocked a metal lens for being metal? Metal build is a good thing, it’s going to last forever. Also there’s a difference between chromatic aberration and just the natural color that’s out of focus. I’ve thought I had CA with another lens but when I looked at it with my own eyes it’s how it looked in real life. I don’t think the bird photo is CA but just a grey out of focus edge. I have seen almost zero CA with my 55 1.8. Sometimes that’s just how it looks and it looks similar to CA. My 50 1.4 planar though has a good dose of CA wide open. Once you use a lens with terrible CA you’ll see the difference.
How are compared with sony FE 35 1.8 ?
Thanks for making great videos, very insightful. I am torn between the 55mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 plantar. I want something light and for video as well as photography. Your review and some other reviews I've watched all say similar things about chromatic aberration etc on the 55mm which is holding me back from making the purchase.  I am wondering though, a lot of the reviews for the 55mm are from a few years ago and I was looking on the Sony website today, and it says about the 55mm "T coating reduces all forms of aberration". I'm wondering if Sony has made some design changes to fix the CA issues in 2020? Do you know about this? I'm new to photography, no one on youtube likes chromatic aberration, this lens seems to have it as a major problem going by the reivews, but yet you still give it the thumbs up? Can CA be easily fixed in post? Thank you.
what's the T* stand for?
The only downside to this lens is price other than that it's perfect exceptionally sharp
Is this guy the pigeon whisperer?
I owned this lens. It's really sharp and fast af but the chromatic aberration is very visible at wide open and even up to f2.8 in a non-backlit situation (worst in backlit). Makes most of my videos unusable. Photos are bad too even after removing CA in Lightroom. I don't see much people talking about this though.
Ahh man that focus breathing kills me. but the image sharpness is damn impressive
What is the best lens for e mount ?
Bought this back in 2015. At F1.8 it shows a ton of CA although this diminishes at smaller apertures. Whether they've improved it over the years, I don't know.
I just bought Sony 55mm 1.8, recommend me ND filter plz
Came back to this video to click “like” :) Thanks for the help by this review!
5:59 this photo in chefchaouen Morocco right
Yes, it is.

what's the T* stand for?
It doesn’t seem to be a worthwhile upgrade from the 50mm 1.8 for the value-oriented non-pro.
I love your objective review every time. Excellent work. I have owned this little lovely sharp lens for a while. I am happy that you raised the green & purple color fringing issues.
This lens is exactly what I was wanting out of a 50mm ☬☬>ヘ I'm not sure what all the fuss is about with the AF, it really hasn't caused me any problems. It is a little loud, but it doesn't bother me, and I don't really shoot video so I don't have to worry about hearing it in the footage. The AF is a *little slower than the stock lens on the a6400, but not nearly slow enough to be a determent. It's still very fast. Overall a great lens for the price.*
May I ask, when the 55mm ZA focus from f1.8 to f22, the noise becomes louder step by step, is it normal for this len? I am sure it is from the blades that moves when focusing
An update version with a button for AF on/off will be nice, aperture ring will be very nice, maybe a GM version !?
I use A7II. And I have a 85mm FE lens 1.8. but I feel it's too zooming to use marriage documentation. I want a lens with a rather wide view and good for portraits. it would also be better if you could video. I searched YouTube and found options on Zeiss 55mm 1.8. can it replace the 85mm role that I have? because I had to sell it to get a 55mm zeiss lens. Thanks for the answer
Wishful thinking: A 50mm G-master
Just got this lens last night with an A6000 for $100 :)
This man is complaining about "focus breathing" when he's shooting THROUGH a glass window at 2:07. Clearly, it was looking at all of the dirt on the window, not the graveyard he was trying to get it to look at. I'm sure it focuses just fine.
Nice review! I got this lens with my new A73 and absolutely love with its sharpness. However I have noticed an aperture noise when turning on/off the camera. Have you noticed it before? Or is it normal?
So is there a lower priced alternative for full frame cameras? One with OSS even, perhaps?
I know nothing about the details between these two. clearly the $997 lens looks better. but for the money and unless I was a professional photographer I couldn't justify the difference in price.
thanks for comparison. Zeiss definitely is better But i can said based on the "PRICE" different. Actually Sony FE 50mm are about 85% close to it? I think is more worth for buy Sony FE 50mm
Dear all, Please DO NOT BUY ZEISS LENS~Damned ZEISS.I bought so expensive ZEISS lens but. After 3 months later, I found that a little bit hard scratch in my glasses (Of course I bought it from glasses store clerk's recommendation about 'this lens is so superior about long durability in scratch') I felt angry~And they so lated reply from customer claim. Funny ZEISS~Still even do not refund even if only 1 lens have problem. Think about it~Who crazy customer request refund/make claim after customer made hard surface scratch by customer's mistake I just make lens clear after cleanning cool shower water. But.scratch? DO NOT CHEATED BY ZEISS's name value fame~
The comparison I was looking for, interestingly enough the Sony lens isn't bad especially if you're on a budget. But you can also tell the Zeiss lens performs much better
Have had my old Sony A7 since 2014 and I just today decided to grab the Sony FE 50mm f1.8. I've used nothing but manual lenses on the camera since I got it. I had to update the firmware which was still on version 1 exactly as the camera shipped from the factory. Man what a difference firmware ver. 3 make to the A7 almost all the slowness and clunkiness disappears. It's still an old camera but even reviewing images on the camera works better now. Anyhow back to the 50mm f1.8. I was pleasantly surprised, focus is not maybe the fastest but its precise no front or back focusing, I don't expect great video tracking and I don't really do video only stills so I'm actually quite happy with focus speed. Sharpness is as expected, all the 50mm F1.8 lenses perform well enough for most things they always have, even an old Leica 50mm f3.5 Elmar will perform well enough for most things. Nikons old 50mm f2 lenses perform well enough too. In these shots the 55mm Sony Zeiss is better but the little 50mm f1.8 is not far behind and more than up to the job. The lighting used will have more effect on the final images then the difference between these two lenses but that true with most lens comparisons.
Actually a Nikon user and stumbled upon this by accident. I stopped whenever you had two pictures to compare (before showing the lens-tag) and I always picked the 55mm. Even though both look good.
Does the video portraits also using 50mm ? looks like 85mm to me. really nice bokeh
Thanks for the review but was a bit confusing as the 2 lenses were either right or left and not sure what lens was at the end. And analizing the shots yourself and giving your take on both lenses would have been nice. cheers bro
Wow it's 2020! Really appreciate you doing this video! Thanks for the review, I really enjoyed your shots and your personal opinions, it's a lot of coin to spend $200 vs almost $1,000. I've been trying to decide and thinking you could buy the 85 1.8 + 50mm 1.8 and have 2 lenses to play with for portraits or get a wide angle lens like the new 20mm 1.8 or a 28mm F2 with money to spare.
Lol 100 dollars gave a thousand a run for its money
Nice video! Great comparison . . . Thank you!
wow the zeiss has some seriously swirly bokeh tho
I was going to get the 28-70mm lens but aside from stills and videos, I also want something I can vlog with and that lens is so big, you’re selling me on this one but people have been hating on the slow af. What do you recommend ? Is the af really that bad
Why you are making fool by creating this video. I think you don't know the basics about still photography. Most of your images are just flat. don't mind but work hard. Its an art and should be reflected when you are compare lens like Zeiss.
If you are mostly casually photographing and the majority of your images end up on Instagram or other web based repositories that are similar, there is no reason to drop an additional $800 on the Zeiss. If you do mostly pro print work and the images are going to be blown up into 8x10 or something of that nature, you will start seeing the separation between the two lenses. The Zeiss is a little sharper, cleaner, and dynamic, and has an edge in bokeh. Again all very tiny differences but in pro shoots any little bit extra is potentially the difference between getting called back to do more work or not.
what softbox was this?
For the video portion. What lens did you use?
Bokeh really only matters when you have a busy background. Focus speed matters more when you are shooting video or action. In terms of sharpness, contrast, and color you could fix those easily in post. The Sony lens is an exceptional value and a great all around lens at $250. Switch to APS-C mode and you have a 75mm f2.8 lens (I am dropping one f-stop because technically you are not shooting at 75mm f1.8.)
Why the hell the sony has a smoother bokeh at 249usd
I've allways said the fe 50mm is very underated I know it's not perfect but for 98 percent of the time it's very good
I just ordered mine today! I can't wait to use it .
About CA you did mention. I did notice that the old copies has it and I, as you, I can’t see it on this new copie. Old copies has a “Carls zeiss” logo, new ones just “zeiss” on the front ring
Thanks for the review! I’ll probably end up purchasing now
Die CAs sollen leider sehr stark ausfallen
Thanks for a video!
Great lens. I bought it 2 years ago. Lifht enough, sharp, vignetting is almost none. Great lens for street photography.
Had it for a year. Now it makes a screaming sound like a train with broken brakes. The focusing is terrible and useless now
So it’s like czhaeiss? I didn’t know haha
Congratulations. Good job. Fantastic!
Is image stabilization inbuilt?
I bought the lens at the same time I bought the A7r lll when it first came out, I just always loved the look and feel of it. so I wanted it for my first Sony lens. and at first I was just doing casual shots with it on the street and I thought it was a good lens. but it wasn't until I did an actual photo shoot with it outdoors with a model that I realized how good it was, when I got home and looked at the pics on my computer I was really amazed by the image quality. it was also partially the A7r lll. but in my opinion it is one the best lenses I have ever owned. and I love the size and weight of it. it just feels perfect on my camera. if I didn't care about weight I might of wanted the f1.4 for those times I want to blur backgrounds out more. but I have no regrets, for most things its an amazing lens. its one of those lenses I will probably keep forever. even if I someday I buy a new 50 f1.4. but if I was someone with a small budget I would have no problems using the Sony 50 f1.8. I have seen some really nice images taken with that lens from people who knew how to use there camera. ( I own an old Canon 50 f1.4 and Sigma 50 f1.4 non art lens that I can adapt with my mcll adapter, but I haven't used either of them since getting the 55.

Priced over $1000 for f1.8 standard lens is not cool nor value. To be honest, ZA 50mm f1.4 is a better buy. If wanting small, samyang 45f1.8 is cheap and cheerful.
Another enjoyable review of a fantastic lens! May I suggest that you do a Sony 35 mm comparison 1,8 1,4 and 2,.8 in the future.
Wer ist denn die junge hübsche Frau bitte . :-) Und ja, die Linse ist mega habe ich auch ! Schon einmal die G Master ausprobiert ? (24mm 1.4)
