The lens is sharp, but not at 1.4 Sir as you just stated it was very sharp. The chart you are showing at 1.4 the number look fuzz. I have this Len for about a year now, I realize the reason way my images were looking fuzz is because it's not sharp at 1.4, Great review on the lens it self.
stupidly priced .
zeiss label: warning sign hahaha :)
Dang. no weather sealing :(
nice lens review and nice book
Chris, as usual Zeiss and Sony would need me to sell a body part to afford that Zeiss glass.
However, there is the choice of the Zeiss related 55 1.8 which was very well reviewed by DXOMARK.
A much cheaper option, yes 55 is a little longer and marginally less useful than 50 mm.
This lens has rubber ring around the mount.
Christopher, would you choose this lens or the Sigma Art 50mm?
Sony Zeiss 50 ZA 1.4 or the Sigma 35 1.2 dg dn ? what do you prefer ?
Hey the new Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is a screaming deal at $2,199.00 they just knocked off a 100 dollars. From what I hear it blows this Zony out of the water. Just a little perspective. So far as focus breathing it is not a 9000 dollar Cinema lens. I own it and it is a special lens by any standard.
How fast is the autofocus on the A5100 compared to the A7II? Would the autofocus of the A6400 be faster than either A5100 or A7II?
Hi Christopher, you should perhaps consider using Auto-ISO when showing clickless aperture changing in video mode. It’s hard to focus on DOF changes when the exposure is changing that much.
Most other sources claim that this lens is in fact weather sealed, but some point out that the gasket at the mount is very thin. I agree that it would be very surprising otherwise for such an expensive lens.
Sony’s most underrated lens. I’ve had it a few years now and absolutely love it. Kills every other 50mm ever made.
This lens isn't nearly as good as the Sigma 50 1.4
At that price it makes me appreciate my Takumar 50mm1.4 all the more I'm sure I could buy at least 15 more of them
The Sony Zeiss FE 50mm f/1.4 was introduced in 2016 and was the last collaboration between Sony and Zeiss with e-mount lenses.
Zeiss lenses like Voightländer ones are not really german lenses but Japanese ones by Cosina. Also very few Sony Zeiss lenses are made in Japan. The small and light full frame e-mount Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 is one of the few exceptions.
Finally, I was hoping and praying you would review some of the early zeiss lenses, 35/50 and Batis line. I might say the copy you have is faulty mine doesn’t make a sound and is flawless. I used the Sony system for about two years only renting lenses until I could afford to buy. I never got to try the 35/50. But when it came time to purchase I considered this planar lens as a worthy investment in the line. And I wasn’t wrong the 50 almost never leaves my mkiii. I shot several hundred events and fashion shows over the last two years the 50 was the one lens that when I think back would have served nearly 60 percent of my usage. Thanks again for the review, I might add that price should be a reflection of a photographers investment in a system going forward. I only say that because it was after shooting with a canon shooter who used a 50mm f1.4 with great results and it was a lens he a had purchased with the 5d mkii and was now using with his Mkiv. When you buy into a system buy lenses that are proven. The 35/40/50/135 zeiss lenses are even better with the mkiii or mkiv.
Fun fact: the only difference between Sony lenses and Sony / Zeiss lenses is the S/Z lenses are tested on a Zeiss machine at the Sony contract lens factories.
this short, I simply believe that Sony Zeiss lens cannot be justified on a cost IQ basis. The design of Gaussian 50 mm lens is not difficult.
Am not sure how much Sony pay Zeiss to put the Zeiss name on a lens.
The one exception to my comments is the really excellent Sony Zeiss 35 2.8. Ok, not a light demon, but fabulous street and general lens.
Throughout this video, you're speaking way too quickly. Your messages are getting lost. Slow down and make a nine minute video instead of seven. Your comments deserve to be savored.
Love this review/love letter haha. Fantastic work
Damn dude. You are a great reviewer. I might be your 215th subscriber, but you should easily have a 1000x more subscribers.
Great review. New subscriber
Lol love those hilarious transitions!
can you please help me choose i dont know which is newer or which is better same price i think, one you can find easy the other you cant and i cant find any info online look Sal50f14z vs Sel50f14z same lens
Great review, but why is the background music jazz happy birthday?
Clearly one of my favorites. Please share the DXO setup you used to show it at the top of the heap. Thank you for your effort.
It's a great lens, but dust resistance is a joke really. Mine got 2 spots of dust after 3 months of light use in the city.
You are the absolute best reviewer I've seen.
Very informative, amazingly good examples, and a pinch of humor.
Most reviewers are sadly better at producing youtube videos than taking pictures.
Do you happen to have a flikr album or similar where we can take a look at some of your awesome pictures?
Great review.
You would not put this in the sure why you included that. Also, why were your dishes still covered in soap if it was run? It makes no sense
You said it all, I use it for almost a year and love it! It feels amazing to the touch and the ring is a pure joy to use! I’m having a hard time deciding if I should remove vignette or not.
ur lens is so dirty
This lens is extremely durable as well! I dropped my camera off the back of my truck onto hard caliche road and it LIVED! The camera landed lens first and the only damage taken was the screw on filter shattered along with a small ding on the hood.
Are you saying I should tell my wife I must sell my 55 for the planar? If I get injure will be your fault! ♂️
Just ordered mines New from B&H, it's been on back-order for sometime I'm guessing due to the covid situation. Nice video!
Best review of this lens and now I can't resist buying it new. I don't want second hand one if I'm going to fall in love
Brilliant review, gorgeous images and excellent editing, Felix. It was nice to see some pictures that you took on “Talk radio”. Cool video, well done .
Best review of these lens I’ve seen. I love mine as well.
WTF DUDE!? I WAS BAMBOOZLED INTO THIS REVIEW. I THOUGHT THAT WAS KAI
27.5 oz / 780 g it is as heavy as the sigma 50 MM 1.4 art . To be honest I am still interested by this lens, but I think it is better to get it second had. Sigma may release a new DG DN 50 mm 1.4, lets wait. In the meantime, I will keep my 55 1.8
Why isn't this graded?
He doesn't look like Kai, doesn't sound like him, doesn't act like himwhy are you confused?
5:18 compare to 55mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 LOL
A
Is that for portrait?
did kai travel back in time?
hi bro , speed focusing fast or not compare with 55mm ZA ?
I highly recommend this lens せ For beginners, pros, hobbyists, or just something budget friendly. Granted, the material that makes up this lens is some what like plastic of some sort but if you get a lens hood and take care of it you’ll be fine. Auto focus worked amazing on my a7rii and the quality blew my mind. I say totally buy it!
I didn't know kai lives in Australia?
The comments here only show how much Kai has impacted camera/lense reviews from the eastern part of the world but, well, he's based in London for now.
Why's is soo big ffs? I have the planar 50/1.4 T ZE.2 and it's tiny. This is totally useless for street photography as it's to big. Don't expect to shoot candid shots with this.
the dumbest review of all
Sigma 50 1.4 FE or this ?
great review, thanks
This lens has a fog issue Lens did you guys film this episode with?
Color is too muted.
And not a single video test. Thanks a lot.
Thank you Dustin. I got this today based on your review. Got a great deal on it. So it didn’t cost the earth. Can’t wait to give it a go.
You should really protect your expensive lens with a good neutral filter
Sir Sony ziess 1.8 55 mm vs sigma 50 mm 1.4 which is bettr
Hi Dustin. Thank you for the review. I've had the lens for some time and recently I've noticed that the lens has serious front focusing issues. Almost 90% of my shots are front focused when I use the eye detect feature. I thought that it was my camera's problem, but I don't have the same issue with 85gm. It is always in focus. The thing is that I went back to the old pictures taken by A7riii and this problem was there, but way less frequently. With a7riv, it is almost all the time. I love this output from this lens, but it is really frustrating since I don't know what the solution is. You mention about autofocus issues, but I am not sure that it is that frequent in your case. Any thoughts?
Poor Samyang, its not fair to compair it with a zeiss lens *v
The 24 GM, this one and the 135 GM, please. Oh, and someone to carry them for me :)
You are one of the few reviewers that knows what they are talking about and whose information and opinion is not muddled by influencer nonsense. I have enjoyed your reviews for a number of years now. These 50mm reviews are great. I was having a hard time deciding between the 55mm 1.8 and the 50mm f 1.4. Mostly because of the size and weight of the 50mm and the price difference. After watching your review many times I decided on the 50mm f 1.4. You are correct it is a truly extraordinary lens. It has so many amazing characteristics to it that make it a true pleasure to shoot with. It has become my favorite lens and I have shot with many. Some of the Sigma lenses are great also but I do a lot of street photography and those tank lenses really become cumbersome carrying around all day. Thank you for your informative and excellent reviews. They have really helped with my decisions to buy lenses and especially with purchasing the 50mm f 1.4 which is a fantastic lens.
For manual focusing, does this lens allow for linear repeatable focus pulls, or does the rate you turn the focus wheel change the distance it focuses? When comparing to the Sigma, or even a full manual lens, I'm wondering how that works. It's tough to find a lens that does good autofocus, but also acceptable manual focus. I'm 90% videographer, so depending on the situation ideally I can find a lens that does both fairly well.
I will order this lens today. Thank you for an awesome review
HI Dustin. Not sure if you'll see my post in this "oldie but goodie" review, but I always enjoy your honest, complete and detailed lens reviews and comparison testing! I'm a landscape and product photographer currently using the Fuji X-System, with some superbly sharp Fujinon XF lenses. Though I have been pleased with the output of the Fuji kit in terms of 24" x 36" prints,I still feel that, as a sharpness and detail fanatic, I could get even more detail with a FF system, such as the Sony a7Rlll (or the Nikon Z7). Can you please advise me which system would provide the most improvement to my landscape and product work over my Fuji kit, especially in terms of image sharpness and detail? (I use focal lengths of 16-55 for landscapes, and 80 Macro for product photography, all on a solid tripod with 10-second timer, for optimum sharpness.) Thank you!
What about the focus sound, mine has a quite loud sound when moving elements , a bit louder than the 85 GM although it is way fasterWhat is your experience ?
Is there an equivalent quality lens to the Zeiss Planar 50mm in a wider lens say a 35mm?
Excellent review! How does this fair against the original contax version? As far as the optical quality goes.
Do you think this is good for food photography or overkill and should just go with the much cheaper Sony 50mm 1.8?
I love your reviews! I would have loved a comparison with the signs art. I ordered this lens today because I got a pretty good deal. 1000 euro instead of the usual 1500. However as of right now my most beloved lens is my sigma art 50 EF, that even with the Mc 11 produces some magnificent results. I hope this one can surpass it otherwise it will have been a pointless purchase
Have you ever test the sony distagon 35 mm 1.4? I hear that lots after dec 2018 has solved the issues some claims to have found on that lens, I even read it got GM SSM, so maybe if you put hand on one, check it production date. :)
is the focusing linear when manually focusing in video?
Hi, Mr.Abbott, did you noticed that the wide open f/1.4 is actually stopped down a little bit (like f/1.5 in my eye) in the normal distance (i mean, not infinity) , just like the Batis 40 CF, while, the FE 55/1.8 is not.
You are very handsome .
And your video for this lens is extremely tempting more than its sharpness
Decided to buy one.
This lens has a fog issue >
