Digital zoom? I thought this had optical zoom?
I was one of the first people who recognized how great this new one inch sensor camera is, and bought the original RX10 when it first came out, and I still use it all the time, and feel no need to upgrade. I have a great Fisheye lens for it that I bought on Amazon. I also have both the Sony RX100 and RX 300 which takes identical photos for when I can't carry around the much larger RX10. Most people should buy the older RX10 like mine and save a lot! I just uploaded a new video I made with mostly fisheye photos I've taken with this amazing camera! https://youtu.be/DE7IqAMiTrs
Nikon coolpix 1000 win the zoom 100%
Hey Caleb, a big reason why I want this camera is because it seems to be the only decent camera out there offering a wide range of slow motion options for an affordable price. Im looking to get a camera that can capture something like a hummingbird flying in slow mo. Does the 2-4 second rule apply to every level of slo motion this camera offers or just the 480 fps and 980 fps options? Also are there any over cameras out there that offer 500 fps plus slow mo for around the same price or cheaper you'd recommend that I look into? Thanks
The sound of the zoom operating registers in videos in my camera. Is this typical? Bought used under a return deal, should I send it back? tia.
Quite serious money and its got flaws like focusing problems, that is not good!!
Outstanding review. Thanks.
Thanks Caleb, very nice and clear review on this camera. Much appreciated
Are there also results ?
Excellent review.
Caleb;
While shooting video in MANUAL mode, and f stop is set at F11, will F stop remain at F11, while zooming?
THanks.
Thinking about getting this just for the 600mm lens zoom. It would be cheaper than trying to get a 600mm lens for any E-mount. What do you think?
The things I hate about this camera are
- minimum focus distance is terrible (most annoying ever)
- zooming speed at fast is still slow
- zooming sound and small nudge movement that ruins the video
- no ND filter built-in
- super heavy which is why i switched to a6500
- grainy even at a low ISO
- lowest aperture f-stop is at f2.4 which really sucks
The only notable strength of this camera is the versatility like you're bringing 2 cameras in one.
It's good in most cases when traveling but if you're into artistic shots with shallow depth of field, stay away from this camera.
Proper review. So many reviews especially on tube are garbage
Just the kind of review I was looking for!
Very good presentation. Pity you never followed up with the RX10mk4?
Thanks for a very nice review. About the HDMI out, can I use a Atomos Ninja V with this Camera?
Seems like a heck of a versatile camera. 👍
Caleb,
Thanks for this review.
Would like an update review + comparison on all Bridge/Superzoom cameras with 1" sensor available in the market:
- Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 Mark II
- Leica V-Lux 5
- Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/3000
- Canon Powershot G3X
- Sony Cybershot RX10 Mark IV
Thanks
Stop ending sentences as if they are questions.
great review, very helpful
How do I shoot through small gaps in trees etc. Or shoot through bars etc in a cage or zoo, I assume it's to to with focus settings, I'm struggling to figure it out, is it even possible
come here to see pics and videos with this cam, to see what this cam can do from one edge to the another... why do i see the hole time? the man and hear him talking like an radio.... oh boy...
Excellent review. I was so close to upgrading my MK II, to the III.
That said, your point at 9:28 was the deciding factor in my deciding to stay with the RX10 II. JUst not sure how often I would use the 600mm lens. I just love using the MK II, for video and stills. (Quality and ease of operating)
So why spend the $, if I have to be concerned about the non constant F factor, while zooming.
Thanks so much for posting.
no back button focus but a focus hold button

there are a fews, if no lot reviews that are inconsistents, even, contraditories. Take a look: in the same TCS review about Panasonic Fz 1000, that has the same aperture F/2.4-4, they dont say nothing against it. But for the Sony Rx10 III, suddenly they discover a huge problem. When TCS reviewed the Sony Rx10 mk I, they said "oh its only 200 mm focal lenght. Could be more" to achieve that mountains far away. Now that achieves the 600 mm, OMG, that´s too much... So, where should you stay? you want more focal lenght or you don´t? About Sony RX10 III don´t have ND filter, they said : "oh its a shame, it´s so need". But look likes they forgot that the Panasonic FZ 1000 dont have it too. So, on a Sony RX10 III, don´t pass the critics. But on the Panasonic, "put on yours back". And finally, one more thing: they criticise the EVF resolution, they said "its only 2.3 m dots". Well, how we wonder that a lot of still cameras could have it one such that with an excellent resolution. A little more of coherency, thrully, honesty, consistance on the reviews, it will be fine and welcome. They loved a lot Canon and Nikon brands. But they forget that even that brands have theirs own issues, limitations and handycaps. There is no perfect still camera. If a certain brand put on a model or inovating one thing, when they put out the second generation, they put new functions, and get out one or some of the former models. The brands make it purposely for consumers buy another and modern one, to make us spent more money. They knows quite well what they are producing for. If they will put a big sensor on a bridge still camera, with fixed lens, the focal lenght it will be short. If they make a longer focal lenght, then they put a small sensor. The brands are joking with us. And they are playing with ours money. Furthermore, why the brands can put on a small form factor still camera like Sont Rx10 Mk IV image stabilization, and they don´t put on the lens adapters, like the Sony La-Ea1, 2, 3, 4 ? Why the brands can put stabilization on the lens, on the still cameras bodyies, and they couldn´t put it on that adapters ? Once again, the brands make it purposely. Once again, if brands can put on a small piece like La-Ea 2, phase detection, why don´t they put earlier on still cameras models, like all Sony Nex 5, 6? It is not a question of space, or technology time age. It´s only because the brands don´t want to put all the best features that they can do, one a single still camera. Why there is movies cameras that have 3 cmos sensors, and why could not existing a still camera with that kind of technology ? If majority of us could say and agree that this Sony Rx10 III has limitations, handycaps, you see, this brand make it purposely, because it´s so expensive, to get some critical issues, or at least, some lacks, like ND filter, for example, like you observe it and said.
Chris, Jordan,
Thanks for this review.

There's an option in the menu which allows you to increase the zooming speed when using the ring, so the first point is actually not really valid...
from wide to tight very quickly... "t" doesn't mean tight, it means telephoto. of anyone I think you'd know this.
and you look almost EXACTLY like my uncle
what the heck you got a shave halfway through
who lost his lens hood
Hi I am planning a trip to russia via china. It is a longest journey I have done. I'd like to take long continious video for my documentry. Which would be good? Panasonic g7 or sony rx10 ii?I dont want the cameras to be tedious and battery life to be great. I also want great quality. Does the 1 inch sensor of sony rx 10 ii provide quality footage comparing to micro four thirds of panasonic g7?
You didn't talk about the manual focus ring, it must have it, like the HX400V. It is a very good feature.
Hi. Will you be reviewing the RX10 MK4 soon? Would really like to hear your thoughts. Regards Peter.
Hi, you wouldn't have a Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 high speed lens in excellent working condition laying around some place that you would sell or know of someone you trust looking to sell ?
The RX10 has unavoidably a small digital image sensor. Only small sensors allow relatively small super zoom lenses. The disadvantage is that image sensors suffer from image noise during ISO. Of course the camera has internal software with noise reduction but that is not a real solution.
During daylight all superzoom premium bridge cameras give decent results. For night photography these kind of cameras struggle.
Can you please tell me if you can shoot a video and in the same time you take a picture let me know please thank you so much

Back button focus: focus switch to MF (I know, makes no sense), and AEL button set to "AF/MF Control Hold". Also, a dab of hot glue / similar on the AEL button itself makes it much easier to find/press. Latest and original firmware version 1.00.
Thanks to the Very comprehensive and very detailed review..

Thanks.
Pretty sure we will see a RX10V. This camera is the king of the category.
What do you think of the FZ2500?

Thanks.
As good as the RX is, on a nice day like in the video even my nikon bridge camera takes amazingly sharp pictures with very little noise.
Great video, thank you.
Excelente comparación.
Where are the comparison photos?
Where's RX10 V?
I get a Sony RX10 MIV and will not change it for any one !
RX10M4 for me, having been a Nikon guy with tons of lens, the RX10M4 just made sense. Recent trip to Africa and 7 safaris I would have missed so many shots had I been left with changing a ton of lens around. Picture quality between my Nike D5300 and the Sony RX10M4 was indistinguishable!!!!
I have the A7Riii, and 100-400 with a 2x adapter. I also have the RX10vi. I end up using the RX10vi a lot especially on trips. The camera is larger but weighs less than the 100-400 lens! It also takes great video! Sure you can shoot with the 200-600 etc but how often are you going to be swapping the lenses? Simpler to get it all with the RX10vi when traveling.(I have the Nikon D900 (and tried the D1000) with the 24-2000 lens but most of the images are way worse than the Sony superzoom.
I really love Sony rx10 mark lV
I use a rx10 iv and a rx1 for travelling. Perfect combo.
Just wait for RX10 V !!!
The RX10 M4 is not perfect but it is an amazing piece of kit. I primarily use it for photographing cricket, and players are happy with the clear results it gets. Being able to shoot 24 fps is great, and allows me to get the 'moment' shot much more often than I used to. I also love the slowmotion footage
You both are so funny. Great video!
who knocked you up???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
With A9ii body only budget, you can buy 3 rx10iv 😅..
Gotta love the constant Sony dust spots on the a7iii, a7riv and a9ii. Electronic cleaning doesn't work. Blower doesn't work.
At the end its all about you as a photographer. I've been using my Sony RX10 IV professionally as a sports photographer and videographer for the last two years. Other professional photographers have been impressed by the potential of this all in one camera.
PUT STRAPS ON YOUR DAMN CAMERAS!!!!
I've got a Panasonic FZ82 as a bridge camera myself (with a 1/2.3 inch sensor) and the pictures at 6:39 and 7:37 are also typical for the FZ82 on the long zoom range end: it becomes soft and grainy and loses detail. So if you're serious about action photography, wildlife or birds in flight an APS-C or full frame camera will have signifcant added value in image quality.
As far as macro shots are concerned: on the RX10 MK4, you need to use the longest focal length (600mm) in order to have the greater magnification ratio which is in that case around 0.50:1 equivalent to FF
