Sony 70-300mm VS Sony 70-200mm F4 - Which one should YOU buy?
All I heard was crying in this video.
I've found the place where you took the photo at 3:50. It's here: https://goo.gl/maps/r76Ha93qi234aYSN7. Now I want to go there :)
is this lens better then the Sigma 100-400? if you don't need the extra zoom and want image QT?
Hi, Greetings from Canada. I am planning on buying a telephoto lens. Sony 70-350 is now cheaper (900 CAD). I also have my eyes on Tamaron 70-180 f2.8. but that one doesn't have IIS. Would you please do a review on the Tamaron and a comparison if possible. I'd be delighted. Thanks
IS THIS LENCE SUITABLE TO SONY ALPHA 58
Great lens! With my Sony a7 iii I have take some spectacular images!
I currently have the Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS II with a Sigma MC-11 adapter. The AF when on my A7 mk3 is really fast and IQ is very good. I keep thinking I should maybe get a native zoom instead but reviews like this one have so far stopped me. The cost of this Sony lens is prohibitive when you consider the reviews in general reflect the lack of IQ and build quality combined with a very silly price. I do have the Sony 200-600 G lens which is excellent so they can make top quality, reasonably priced optics but this isn't one of them.
I bought this lens second had for about half the retail price. Really good lens, great sharpness at 300mm f4.5. Very pleased.
What lens is the best for zooming inn? I am looking for a lens that can bring objects very close using SONY PXW-FS5M2.Please someone HELP
Price is not crazy for that long of a reach and it is full frame and AF and OSS. I would love for it to be cheaper, but is there competition at a lower price?
I am not a professional imgs.love/Tamron70?Ѐㄱ but I like to take professional looking photos. I needed a nice zoom lens to use for indoor sporting events (swimming). It worked fantastic and I know it will be even better outdoors in natural light. I am very happy with this lens, it is a great deal for the price.
does this fit the a6000?
I currently use the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS nano usm II with the Sigma MC-11 on my A7 III and it seems to perform quite well particularly with regard to AF speed and accuracy however I was thinking of replacing it with this Sony 70-300 so as to do away with the mount converter but after seeing your review I think I'll stick with what I have and save some pennies. Both the Sony 70-200 f4 and the upcoming Tamron 70-180 might also have been possible contenders, again so I could lose the MC-11 converter, but the focal lengths are just too short for my purposes.
i got the fullfram 70-200 f4
The lens body is made of metal, not plastic.
Great review! Thank you this was excellent.
Could you review the Sony 70-350, as I'm thinking of getting and I always like you reviews.
Great review as always! Could you do one for Sony 70-200mm f4? Thanks:)
i wish you could compare this lens to the new 70-350 on an apsc camera. thanks
Hi Chris. How do you think if I adapt the Canon EF 70-300mm lens to a Sony A7III camera body?
Whats your favorite telephoto?
Thank you for another excellent review! I have this lens and i do like it for those longer range shots.
What would be your choice between this and sigma 100 400 and tamron 70 300 with a7c?
Had this lens for a few weeks in the summer of 2018 but did not like the etched, hard look and busy bokeh. My experience was that it lacked the magic image quality that comes with better optics and concluded it was an overpriced kit lens. I returned it.
I own this lens for some time now and I use it with a distance ring and manual focus for macro photos at 70mm, then you can go really close for flowers or insects. You can make great portraits from a distance of 5-10 m for example at an event and get quite a nice background separation. I like the natural facial expressions people have when they don´t know they are photographed and this lens is perfect for this because it is not too big and heavy and it is stabilized. I have it on an APSC so it gives me the extra range of a 105-450 mm lens. With APSC the corners do not matter much and there is no vignetting visible. The Sony teleconverters don´t work with this lens and it is not made for low light conditions, these are two of the downsides of this lens you need to know. It is possible to shoot this lens handheld at 450 mm on APSC because it´s stabilized, but it is not easy and you will miss some shots, so it is more convenient on the tripod fully zoomed in. I also recommend the tripod for wildlife and landscape photography.
Just got one used without a scratch on it for $580... at that price was an absolute no brainer.
Have had this lens for quite a while now and are pleased with how it performs. It is important to best match the lens for what you are shooting and have found it very versatile from portrait to sports. Corner sharpness was not of any concern for me and for my subjects and how I shoot not particularly relevant. Important to also convey focus performance is very dependent on the body being used as is also the reach. On apsc the reach extends to 450mm. Another way to think about it is that it is almost as good as the gm range but only at half the price. That was my rational when I made the decision to purchase.
This was one of my go-to lenses for a couple years until I bought the 100-400. Still have it and use it now and then when I want reach, but not the weight of the GM. I picked it up second hand so it was in the 900-ish range which I think was more of a fair price. One thing that should be noted is that the 70-300 is well-known for copy-to-copy variation, which may have an affect on your results.
Hey Stefan, I've been really torn going back and forth with either buying this lens or the 70-200 f4. I can't seem to make up my mind. If possible would you be able to do a comparison video with both of them and specifically how much of a difference the reach is on the 2 side by side in both full frame and in body crop mode? If so that would be great! 👍🏼
great review
Great video!! Thanks!!
Awesome review
Agreed on the price, i dont have the coins to get it. Haha. Wish it come down in coins!
I'm a beginner and on a budget. Do u recommend buying used??
Nice video
Great all around telephoto but expensive!
I bought this lens two years ago and I love it, obviously is not the sharpest but do the job. It has travelled with me around the world and I had put it through some rough conditions and still working great. Interesting that in Australia this lens is more expensive than the 70-200 F4 and some people say that the 70-200 is better than this one.
somehow in my country this lens is either cheaper than the 70-200m f4 or bit expensive around 100 more or less depend on the seller
I have this lens and I like it because it’s so vesatile. Great review!
I looked at this focal range before but ended up going for the Sony 24-240 oss. It's a great lens for documentary and interviews as well as some wildlife photography.
What is the G button on the side for?
Warburton Redwood Forest? I'm considering purchasing this lens along with my Pre-Order of the A7Siii for filming wildlife in low light conditions. Hopefully I can get some good results.
I am still looking for long zoom lens.
Would you recommend this lens like for a6500? I would need it like for shooting kiteboarding from the coast
Nice review John! I own this lens and love it!! Thank you!
John For bird. 70 300 or 70 200 f4. Por favor.
hi john
What is the location of the woods?
Hello family relative
How much
I heard you can have the aperture set at 5.6 and still have a stopped aperture while zooming in and out
Hey John, have you tested this lens with the 2x Teleconverter Lens SEL20TC? I know Sony said it only works on SEL70200GM & SEL100400GM at the moment.
how does this compare to the lumix?
With the aperture, will this lens work well in a gym shooting basketball, volleyball, etc? As Im looking for a lens specific for sports both in/outdoors. The added reach is needful as Im not always close to the action
I'm seriously considering this lens to mount on my a6300 and a7r. Do you know of any way to add a tripod collar?
out of focus blur? what do you mean? does this affect the video while filming for sports?
and why you didn't put this on a tripod?
thx for the video , can i mount it on my a6000 ?
So your in Australia 4:33? (For birds this or 70-200 f4)?
Thank you for a very nice review! Great! Read the comments and se questions about FE 70 - 200 F/4 or the FE 70 - 300 F74.5 - 5.6 and here is my personal findings: The FE 70 - 300 is surprisingly better than the 70 - 200 and I've now sold my 70-200. Let me explain. The reach of the 70 - 300 is better. The sharpness of the 70 - 300 is better (very important to me), the CA is better handled on the 70 - 300. The length of the 70 - 300 is much shorter (about 30 mm) as the 70 - 200 is zoomed internally while the 70 - 300 extend it's tube. The weight is almost the same (the 70 - 300 is only insignificant 14 grams heavier. The corner sharpness of the 70 - 300 is in my opinion much better (not better but much better). The two lenses have the same "form factor" on the roundness of bokeh balls but the 70 - 200 has a bit better contrast (punch) to them and the 70 - 300 sometimes can show more "onion bokeh" than the 70 - 200. But it is not always the case in my opinion. The contrast and color is equal between the two lenses. So to me the 70 - 300 wins the battle and must say that I was surprised when discovered this. I was in love with my 70-200 F/4 but I guess the future finally caught up with it. To me the FE 70 - 300 is a clear winner even considered it's aperture disadvantage to the constant F4 on the 70 - 200.
Exactly the video I was needing! Thank you.
Nice review
Nice one thanks
Hi Stefan, have you checked the new viltrox ii 85mm? Does it convert to 1.6 f? Please let me know 😊
Whats your favorite telephoto?
I went with the 70-300 predominately for sports photography. The extra reach was imperative and even better when shooting on a a6500. The second hand market here in new Zealand is almost non existent for Sony. Many amateurs/hobbyist's choose to go for the cheaper optioned manufacturers so there is an abundance of Canon and Nikon. The 70-300 struggles in indoor low light action photography so I begrudgingly persevere with what I can afford rather than shoot with what I really need.
You always choose the most relevant comparisons! Love it! Similar size weight price and focal lengths for most people is what they actually compare, unlike "lets compare this 2500 dollar lens with that 800 dollar lens because they both say f/1.4" This helped me a great deal deciding on whether i should head towards a 300mm or a 200mm :).
I never understood why oh why the 70-200 have to be WHITE??? Any ideas about that ? Let it be black, like the body , and it would be perfect. I own the 70-300, and use it for travelling to my satisfaction. Shooting from a driving car on bad roads, and still have very usable shots. My compliments for the builders, it is relatively a older lens..
Great comparisons! Thanks!!
I own both these lenses and they are both great tools. I completely agree with your excellent review! I use the 70-200 for best image quality, portraits and most things where 200mm is enough reach. The 70-300 is for hiking or traveling when I need a smaller or less obtrusive lens or when reach is a priority. Also I think for landscapes or other low-light situations where one is using a tripod, I find the collar on the 70-200 is a much better balance and produces much less shake. Love your reviews, you really nail it every time!✌️
wow realy awsome lens..one day i will buy a camera..thank you for your vedio bro..nice clicks bro
Can’t wait for you to do a comparison between the Sony 100-400 which you love and the new sigma 100-400
Thank you for making this video. Keep them coming
