I bought these in the US several years ago as they looked interesting and they are not sold in the UK , I have yet to find anything they are good at.
This tool is for a unique application. I know 20 guys including myself who have used that at work. Installing a brass 90 under a dishwasher is a breeze with this tool. It's not an everyday tool unless you've installed dishwashers daily for 20+ years. Not every tool is meant for the DIY'ERS purse.
So I guess that’s the reason I found one in the rubbish at least now I know what it is .
Just picked one up today at a church sale for $4. I do a lot of work with thumb screw and eyelets so this will work great on those, but I agree I would not spend the $25 on it otherwise.
Similar adjustable spanner sold in the UK by the German discounter Lidl and agree it is a gimmick.

It's a copy of an antique style of wrench but cheaped out. Look up "wizard wrench" in an image search and you'll see the original (but still horribly bulky and most likely not very good) version.

for 5 bucks it seems cool, its basically like a pair of right angle ratcheting pliers.
You gotta remember that a lot of reviews are by people who don't really know much, and all they can say is that it did what the commercial said. Not whether it's actually good or will hold up. If it's cool and technically function they'll think it's good. This design is an old one and the original of this design from a long time ago was apparently much better than this, but even with proper execution it's just not a very practical design.
It does not look durable at all with all the play in the front end of the jaws you can tell just in the demonstration you are showing and with it having a plastic back end wouldn't be surprised that the gear mechanism fall out the back if there were a reasonable amount torque being applied who ever designed it had the right idea but the Quality appears to not be there
It's sad what Apex Tool Group has done to the Crescent brand . and the Nicholson brand, and Plumb, and Wiss.

You're not kidding, for around $34 (Amazon) for this tool seems a bit steep. Like Craig said, it does look like it would work good for holding a tap.
Not sure if you've tried this kind of crescent style wrench which is like a combo with a vise-grip but it has worked well for me when I really needed something held on to :) that gimmicky I'm shocked it's not Craftsman
Looks like it would be handy for using with taps. but there are a host of tools for getting on a tap. the jaws look similar to a tap T-handle.thanks big cat.
Craftsman came out with one years ago. I still have mine. It works the only drawback is that it is wide too wide sometimes so I always carried a regular one as backup

Saw this at O'Reily auto store. I really liked the ratcheting design but I wanted a shorter wrench ,roughly 6 inch. For adjusting fasteners on the fly when at work when you don't want to go dig out the correct box end for something small like putting torque on a moving floor ladder that has come loose or other quick application. Thinking of just getting one and cutting down the handle slight so it fits easier in a pocket or pouch.
Good thorough review d2f. I like this ratcheting tool compared to the original although I've never tried one I always found as an ex vehicle technician that with most adjustable spanners (only used whenever another tool wouldn't fit really) that a lot of the time you would have to keep adjusting an adjustable spanner to keep it tight on a nut/bolt head etc, this ratchet version looks to help minimise any backing-off effect that the standard version has.
