This was really helpful! Cheers!
I just bought the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary factory combo package together with the 1.4x teleconverter. To my surprise, the lens was very sharp straight out of the box given the amount of videos I've seen on YouTube of people having to use the USB dock to re-calibrate the focusing of the lens. No such issue, I was very happy from the get-go.
But, here is the thing, happiness never lasts. I was so happy with the lens whereby I never even touched the 1.4x TC for weeks. I was very much looking forward to it given how well the lens has been performing. And true enough, in an instance, my dream was shattered!! (yes, a little melodramatic, I know, LOL).
So, why don't we start with the instructions manual first? Did you know Sigma made its 1.4x and 2x TCs ONLY to cater to 2 lenses (or technically 4 including their Sports versions)? One, being the 120-300mm f/2.8 and the other the 150-600mm f/5-6.3. Doesn't that sort of ring an alarm bell already? Why would such a big manufacturer with such an extensive line-up of lenses only made its TCs to work only on 2 lenses? To add, in the very same table that listed the lenses that work with the TCs, it also stated only MF (manual focusing) works on the 150-600mm with a footnote on the 1.4x TC saying "When the Tele Converter is attached to the cameras that are compatible with AF at F8, it is possible to shoot with AF. For details, please refer to user manual of camera body ." So, I haven't the faintest idea whether it is supposed to work with the Canon 90D or not.
But, let's get to the meat of it. Right off the bat, the focusing speed was very slow, but that is nothing when comparing to the hopeless hunting of the lens trying to grab focus. You see, is fine and all when you are doing a controlled experiment shooting at some text on a bus stop. After I encountered my problem, I also tried to do something similar by shooting at a tin of paint from 50 ft away. When you are looking at wordings, somehow it kind of lessens the blow as long as you can read the wordings. But, as you put it into real use if you will like in my case by focusing on the leaves of a tree or a bird, it was literally deemed unusable. Not only it couldn't focus, even when it (sort of did), the focus was still off. Even going back to the paint can experiment, I would say anything up to 300mm (420mm extended) is OK or 400mm max (560mm extended, as long as you don't crop in is barely acceptable), but from that point up, you can forget about it. At 600mm (840mm extended, the hunting would be nonstop). Having said that, as you know I do use an APS-C body, a Canon 90D with a 32.5 MP sensor, so in effect, at 300mm I am actually shooting at 672mm which is still much, much shorter than if I had used the lens without the teleconverter wide open at 600mm or 960mm in my case. I saw the camo neoprene cover on your Sigma, I am guessing you are a wildlife or bird photographer. So, I wonder whether you share a similar experience when you are shooting in the wild with the TC?
So, I am not too sure what to do at this point. Do I have a lemon? Or it is just a simple case of it is what it is. I mean if the instructions manual can tell you from the get-go with the 150-600mm you are essentially dealing with a primarily MF lens, to me it kind of warns you what's coming, doesn't it? I don't remember or am aware of the Canon TCs only work with MF on one of their longer zooms, do they? The other thing is there are 2 different schools of thought on what brand of TCs to use, some say you should always use the brand native to your body such as your Canon TCs on your 7D body, but others say you should always use the brand native to the lens. I have no idea which is right? Either way, the fact remains the Sigma 1.4x teleconverter is unusable to me in the context of my 90D x Sigma 150-600mm setup. It has spoiled the entire user experience, I have since taken it off and is not going back onto my 90D again.
Do you have any suggestions?
*_Ive always wanted to get one of Sigma lens▣▣>_**_imgs.love/zSigma?Yきj _**_ Good stuff for close shot .. It was affordable ..I have Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens Sigma has much more wide aperture!_*
The images you focused on at the bus station awning, how far away were you? I have the contemporary 150-600 with the x2 teleconverter and at 100yds or more my images still are not crisp, so for what distances would you say this setup is good for?
the tc1401 is garbage, I have tested it several times. AF works on the A9 that is true but the pictures are blurred with converter than without the same zoom level considered. Test took place on a Sony A9 and on a Canon 5 dsr. With another Tc1401 I also came to this result.
600mm*1.4extender=840mm but the apature diameter is still 95.23mm(since the max apature is f/6.3) so isnt the effective apature 8.8 and not 8.3? please explain :)
sir please help me, i have a Canon 80D Body and a Sigma 150mm-600mm Sports type New Version. and then i have the tele Converter APO 2X DG Sigma the old model , is it compatible with my lens Sports type New version?
Thanks for this review. I just got the 1.4x first generation and put it on my 5d4 and 300mmLis. Working great as i'm coming from the kenko pro 300 DGX. The Kenko can not use microadjustment but the canon does so I do not have to change setting in the field with the canon version.
It would have been easy (and a lot better, imo) to let us see and compare images side by side, with and without extender.
But can the 7D autofocus?
Neither work with the sport on a 7Dii, giving comms errors. I have both 1.4 & x2 extenders
I've been using this lens on my 5d mkiii for a while now and still continue to be impressed with its performance, especially at 600mm. I did have to use the Sigma dock to change the stabilisation option though as the factory setting was pretty bad.
Thanks for the video, subbed.
good job buddy! If you will add an example of a subject in bight lite that is how the lens will be used, mostly. Right? In a bright sunny lite. Thank you.
Thank you. Excellent review and very clear. Please make more, photographers need you :)
*_The optical quality is very good ▣▣>_**_imgs.love/zSigma?gすs_**_ the focus is fine although it is a bit slow and not silecious but nothing that affects, the zoom ring is a bit hard but it is not a problem, the stabilizer works well and the lens is ninitido even in 2.8_*
Lo ho comperato....provato, messo sul cassetto e dimenticato... sono soldi BUTTATI.
I heard autofocus only works up to f8.. what does that even mean?
I'm using the Sigma 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG on a Canon 70D. When I place the convertor the autofocus is not working..

Hello , I have a sigma 70-300 4/5.6 for my nikon d3400, does this 2.0 teleconverter work good on it ?

I just got one of this and inserted it between my canonT6 and a sigma 100-400mm DG lens. But it does not autofocus. I have seen other people post a video about Tamron 2x teleconverter with a tamron 600mm lens, it seems working well on autofocus, or? I'm wondering what prevents it from autofocusing?
What does it auto focus?
the sigma 50-500mm for sony, can I use the teleconverter 2x on my sony camera?
can I use the sigma telecoverter with the sigma 150-600mm on my sony E-mount camera?
Boa Tarde essa equipamento serve na NIKON D3200 com a Lente Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Dg Macro Autofoco P/ Nikon?
Anyone use this with the Sigma 180mm f/2.8 Ex macro?
What happens with auto focus when used with the 150-500 lens?
i got this 2x converter , good .
Another bad point for TC is the price at least for pro-grade ...
Why do you talk só fast
is there any issue with putting a teleconverter on a prime lens? lets say at 50mm or 35mm???
Them kids look like alligator food
Am I the only one thinking he shouldn't be that close to the river 'cause there might be a hungry gator behind him? Or am I watching too much movies and TV. =P
Can you use this converter with any other lens or is it just specific for this and won’t work at all. Want to know if it will at least be able to read the lens on the body if you use the adapter on something other than the two lenses
I photographed a 8 foot gater from about 5 feet away.
Thank you 🏆
Brazil’s Bend State Park about one hour southwest of Houston, Texas. I know it well! Crovid-19 shut it down yesterday. Best ‘gator park ever!!
Get 20 teleconverter and put a kit lens on it. No need for telephoto lens
Awesome video viewed a few people's posts that said just crop the picture but like you mentioned It's not so good. I own a sigma 70-200 2.8 and after viewing your review I intend to purchase the Sigma 2x converter. To me, it's a no brainer for a used excellent condition 2x converter on the web at $150. Thanks for the help oh and like others have said I don't think id be that close to the water with my back, lol.
Want more focal length for your lens? Take it off your 5D Mark III and put it on a 7D Mark II for a crop factor of 1.6X instead of using a teleconverter.
Run dammit lol croc.
5:04 I wouldn't turn my back on that lake knowing there are massive carnivore reptiles in there :|
3:42 Nice drone shot. Love it :)
I using 800 mm lens + crop sensors cam but not enough
I have to use extenders to reach
i hope he realizes that an alligator is a surprise hunter.. it will come flying out of the water from under water. i first thought he brought the younge child for gator bait.... ONLY KIDDING!!
What if you put a Teleconverter behind a Macro Lens?
Will this work on a Nikon Z6 with the FTZ?????
THANK YOU! I have the same camera and lens and was looking for a teleconverter and this was the first video I saw. Thank you! 😃🙌🏼
I have a question for you, I used the lens for 15 shots and I was highly impressed. How long have you had the lens and how good is the lens overall? How is the build quality been for you long term? Have you had any problems with the rear lens mount becoming loose? This lens seems to focus fast and produce great results as good as the competition. This lens is heavy and I’m considering a purchase in the next few days.
amazing! have you try the tc-2001? any quality difference?
The Sigma 50-150 F2.8 OS is one of my all-time favorite lenses
Thanks for the mention! Stay healthy...
TC-2001 is the new teleconverter
Hey !! Is that 50-150mm the OS version .... hard to find friend, you wouldn't be thinking of selling it would you ?
Good review, I just purchased the sigma 2x teleconverter today on eBay for $42 awesome deal right! Well it will be in by the end of the week and I can't wait to try it out with my sigma 70-200 ex dg hsm 2.8 lens and thanks to your review I will install it properly.
