This lens has been around in various guesses since the 1990s I purchased my back then when it was just under £400 a substantial amount back then. And it’s still working well at that time there wasn’t really any option that were as versatile at that price range Sigma also manufactured a 58mm close up apo filter for it. Today it’s a absolute steal at the price and imo out ways any negative that you have pointed out, common sense and learning how to use the lens is important correctly is important and not being heavy handed or forcing the lens zoom and macro setting is important. What is important especially with macro and 300mm tele end is eliminating camera shake which is the most common cause of soft blurred images especially using it of a crop sent camera due to narrower field of you.

I had this Sigma 70 - 300 in 2008 with a Pentax K 20. It was a cheap cheap combination. But I think the Pentax K mount version is much better when using as handheld because the cameras came with inbuilt stabilisation.
i suggest use shutterspeed priority 1/500 in 200-300mm
I own this same lens & find that if you raise the ISO also the shutter speed, it gives better results when handheld, handheld video photography definitely isn't good with this lens. I will soon be trying some macro filters on this lens to get closer to the smaller subjects & to improve its macro facility.

*_The optical quality is very good 📷>_**_imgs.love/zSigma?Iまd_**_   the focus is fine although it is a bit slow and not silecious but nothing that affects, the zoom ring is a bit hard but it is not a problem, the stabilizer works well and the lens is ninitido even in 2.8_*
