So it's; Ugly-what's that got to do with its abilities? Noisy- I suspect that most people using this will use manual focus so that becomes irrelevant. It seems you had a particularly noisy copy, or maybe the microphone was very close to the lens Big- the Canon 70-300 is USM is also big, in fact bigger and Heavier! Heavy- see point above But its pretty sharp at f8- actually right through to f11, and when you turn it to macro it still remains sharp through the higher numbers. Decent IQ for its price point_ I have got some amazingly sharp photos of wildlife. Full frame compatible as well as film and apsc Budget friendly And you still go on to recommend the 55-250mm even though most people looking at this lens are looking for the long reach not the short range. I have owned both(the 55-250mm stm) I stupidly sold the sigma 70-300(very useful range) and got the 55-250mm stm. Guess what? whilst tack sharp(there is no argument there) across the range, It fell short so many times on the extended zoom at 300mm, 250mm is not good enough(even in apsc terms), and I have found myself selling the 55-250mm and buying another example of this very underrated lens. The review was funny, in more ways than one, and I think now you will find a lot of people looking to buy this bargain lens in todays high, overpriced lenses.

Remember this is a lens for a full frame. Hence a smaller format will bring i to higher magnification. Hence you should manually chose the higher shutter speed

I had this Sigma 70 - 300 in 2008 with a Pentax K 20. It was a cheap cheap combination. But I think the Pentax K mount version is much better when using as handheld because the cameras came with inbuilt stabilisation.
i suggest use shutterspeed priority 1/500 in 200-300mm
I own this same lens & find that if you raise the ISO also the shutter speed, it gives better results when handheld, handheld video photography definitely isn't good with this lens. I will soon be trying some macro filters on this lens to get closer to the smaller subjects & to improve its macro facility.

*_The optical quality is very good >   the focus is fine although it is a bit slow and not silecious but nothing that affects, the zoom ring is a bit hard but it is not a problem, the stabilizer works well and the lens is ninitido even in 2.8_*
