Lyrics for the test song:
Pizza's gonna kill me one of these days
It's seems the best way to go
A massive heart attack, or I'll choke to death
There's only one way to know
*I guess I'll die*
So, why for years has Shure gotten away with the "0.6mm (2 ft.)" misprint? It should've always been "0.6m (2 ft.)".
Man, please do more Youtube videos, your reviews are fucking awesome and fun!
Thank you very much for doing an excellent, easy to understand, practical review of the Shure Beta 57a (supercardioid version of the classic SM57Microphone which is apparently the most used microphone in the industry). Because of your review I now know whether or not this microphone is suitable for my particular needs. I wish every reviewer did as good a job as you have done. I look forward to more of you work. Great job Podcastage!
*Just as I had heard **do7.pl/SM58** solidly built and works great with my set up. Now I recognize the SM58 from places that I have seen them used and did not realize how revered they are. I am happy with it and will be careful with it though it does look like it could take a beating.**
What is the difference with the shure beta 58 a
looking to mic up snare drums or guitar amps. which would suit better, this or a regular 57?
It seems that it rejects less than the SM57...Odd especially since it is super-cardioid. One would think it would be better.
I've used a beta 57A for live vocals for the last 18 years.. It's still going strong. Also use it to record acoustic guitar.. Does a good job...
The difference between the Beta and the SM57 was like night and day. It sounds more like an M201 than an SM57
Hi Podcastage! I love your videos/reviews and I've watched a ton lately.
I know this is an old video so you may not see this, but for someone with the budget to get either one and the plan to get an audio interface anyway, would you suggest the Shure Beta 57a over the Samson Q2U? I love how the Beta 57a sounds, but I've noticed your high praise for the Samson Q2U in a few places and it sounds great too so it got me curious. I know the B57a isn't really entry-level when compared to the Q2U but I'm wondering if the Q2U is that good.
Incredible sounding mic 🎤 thank you!
What are your top 3 picks for best warm, smooth and “present” microphone for singing under $1K? Saw your vids on the $400 range. Pizza for thoughts...
just bought one and its broken smh... back to the store!
could this work as a snare mic?
don't you put the sticker on the bumper of your car?
The Shure Beta 57a sounds better than the Shure Beta 58a on your voice.
Interesting that you said it wasn’t a vocal mic. Your voice and harmony sounded really present. Yes, would need a pop filter (like all vocal mics) but sounded up front, smooth and clear on vocals. Agree about the acoustic guitar sound too.
I checked the doobleydoo, It didn't say what you diddleydid
Damn son. Don’t know what a windscreen is called. Doesn’t know what to call a plosive. Insane preamp hiss. Why the hell are you reviewing audio equipment?
That filter fit looks really good!!!
Scary bit of hiss on the video for an audio guy ;)
hey sir : good morning , i like shure mic , especially sm 57 beta with it ,s wind poper .
This microfone is good to guitar amp?
ooooooohhh scary knife
Peter piper picked a pack of pickled peppers !!
Your noise floor is too high... Listen to the hiss in your test.
How about, wind screen?!?
The “foamy thing”?!?
Hey man, is this good for miking up a guitar cab for studio recording?
I believe it is cheaper than the Beta 58, which makes it an attractive option.
este es el original ?? Made in México??
hi Craig, is this mic good for saxophone ?
To my ear the Beta 57A might have a bit less proximity effect than the Beta 58A. For whatever reason, it's just a bit less woofy sounding up close. It's a slightly better choice for speech, I think. Marginally different from the Beta 58A, though. Enjoy.
beta 87 a should sound better
it picks up too much noise for me.. :/
that magnet near the diaphragm would mess with the performance of the mic... would it not??
How would you compare your beta 57 to your sm57? which one needs more gain to sound good, because I am planning to buy one of these 2 mics. Your voice sounds so clear and balanced with this great mic. Thank you very much for your video, very educational and friendly!! cheers man!!
Hey Craig.. Thanks for this very useful video as i am planning to buy one of this shure mics (Beta 57 or Beta 58) and i came across ur custom made cable and i just wonder how to made it? coz i too have a Nikon DSLR with 3.5m audio input with plugin power. and i was planning to buy a Audio Interface to record this mic on my pc for my videos which i shoot from my DSLR. But if there is any way to connect this cable to my DSLR directly then this will be so much cost, time and effort saving.. Pls can u tell me how this cable looks like on both ends and how to made it and everything i need to get this cable and start recording directly on my Camera..!!!
Kinda stupid to do a mic review and not having it hooked up.
I've found a fake Beta 57A, and the description on the upper side of the box said "Precision-engineered microphone optimized for lead vocal applications", while on the original Shure Beta 57A box the description is "Precision-engineered microphone for detailed reproduction of amplified and acoustic instruments"... if this could help you!
This convinced me to buy the cheaper one.
I've just had one arrive I bought off ebay from a 100% seller, so I think it might be innocent but I just had a feeling when I handled it so I googled and found this vid, mine has green and yellow but no trash can, no CE what so ever and says "JC" in a white stamp on the top of the capsule? is that definitive?
Thank you for making this video and I’m so glad I found it! I just purchased two of these from eBay and the seller seemed legit, or may not have even known they weren’t real. As of today, November 2020, they have fixed the wire color flaw and the label size discrepancy. There is even a Shure sticker on the inner diaphragm wrap now. But the box came in a black plastic wrapper labeled “Made IN China” despite the box saying Made In Mexico. The missing letter on the “engineered” is still there. They even added a fake serial number label, but unfortunately for them I ordered two of them and noticed the fake serial number is even the same. The knockoff though still weighs the same as the knockoff shown in this video.
Good advice folks...DON'T BUY MICROPHONES ON EBAY OR AMAZON. EVER.
Thanks for this... I just checked my Beta 58s and Beta 57s and all are real except one... ironically that is the one Beta57 that I use on my vocals lol. Of all the 57s and 58s I tested its the one Beta57 that is the fake that I liked the best on my vocals haha. Why a Beta57 for vocals? Because you can boost the 250 hz and turn it into a SM7 and the Mids and highs are warmer. Tom Petty used to do it too... for warmth on his high ass voice. For some reason the Fake Beta57 is a little bassier and the mids and highs are warm AF... I feel like I don't have to do as much EQing to it. Go figure. Don't rush to throw out your Fake Betas until you do some comparison recordings on the Fake vs Real ones because for certain things(like vocals) you might like your Fake Beta 57 better like I do.
great vid, and very informative specially the last part with front-to-back testing and handling. Thanks for this, and very useful
This is insane! Crazy how meticulously similar the counterfeit one is. Ironically for your voice I prefer the fake for talking as it cuts through the mix better 😬
Right now I’m look at a 57A, it has the green and yellow wire, the tape looks good, the yellow tape isn’t sticking out but the “CE” isn’t shaded, it’s just outlined of that makes any sense?
man,.liam gallagher has been singing counterfeit vocals dude,....no wonder the music sounds tinny dude?
I bought a fake sure 87a beta but I only paid $40.00 so I was pretty sure it was fake and it was. Actually I was looking at it and accidentally hit the buy button oh well at least it works lol
hmmm my Beta 58a doesn't have the trash can symbol or the CE symbol. Fairly certain its original tho and has all the other original traits. 58a tho...
I'm sorry but I prefer far away the fake : the voice is clearer and louder ! The original is boxy... I have a fake and I listened comparison before buying and It was the same thing. Just put a little bit more of foam and it's ok.
so im looking at this mic online, the guy has 200 positive scores on an account from 2010, and everything looks legit, everything, just it does not have the crossed out trash can, the coloration of the head is spot on, the wires are spot on just no trash can :/
The rejection on the fake is abysmal.
1. Fake box is clearly photocopied,
2. G didn't print correctly,
3. Sticker was wrong,
4. Clip was slightly different and lesser manufacturing quality,
5. Papers were folded wrong, warranty lacked a barcode, and (not sure if it was a trick of the light) was blue
6. Addendum was lacking
7. Wires should be yellow & green
8. Plastic wrap should fit
9. Grille should be matte, and a little bit round
10. Lining shouldn't have gaps
11. Foam on capsule should be midźrange gray
12. Capsule center cap should be clean
13. CE should be solid
14. XLR port printing should be popped out (not surrounded by indents) and high quality, and should have a no trash icon.
15. Shouldn't be much handling noise at all
Amazon isn't supposed to allow that stuff!
Wow what a difference sonically! That is a pretty clear difference. Thanks for the information.
