Hi. Do you know if the A81WS windscreen fits on this mic?
I love the look of the 545, anyone know if I can use for vocals in a band instead of the Sm58? .. just to be different? I really want to get one.
I'm getting one. They were very popular and common in 60s studios. Much prefer it over the SM57

I HAVE TWO UNIDYNE 3 / MODEL 545 / 1960S - 70S ORIGINAL FOR ZERO
Unidyne stands for "Unidirectional Dynamic". The 545SD is the grandfather of the SM57 and the grandson of the model 55SH (Elvis mic). The 545 is very useful not just on vocals, but on instruments and amp cabinets as well. A very versatile mic. The SM7B is very close to this...but on steroids. All these are microphone technology that has a 75+ year legacy.
unidyne III is the name of the capsule in the mic. Its the same as in the sm57 and sm58 and I think the sm 565 ( vocal version of this one)

Love your commentary. Today I picked 2 545d's at a yard sale for 25 cents each. WOW !!!Have not tested them yet and they are not the 545sd's but what the hey !!! I'll deal with it ! Good shape for a fishing BIG sinker if they are duds. Thanks for doing this review.
So, I was looking for a microphone to pair with an sm57 that probably sounds a little different, and was wanting to know if this would be a good to pair it with.

My dad has an original unidyne from the 60s or 70s. We use it a lot for vocals at band rehearsals. It’s a super cool. Been considering buying one of the modern re-pros. Based on the sound quality from this vid, I might get one.

The 545 sounds more "open sounding"
The Unidyne III sounds weird with the guitars. The initial attack on the notes sounds substantially brighter on the 545 than the SM57 but then it resolves into a warmer tonality than the SM57. I think the three low end peaks have something to do with that warmth while the more high end peak is responsible for that bright initial attack. The SM57 on the other hand sounds comparatively even than the 545. warmth. Maybe the 545 was used by those artists and it had something to do with that sound.
I could listen to more buzz of the snare wires of the snare drum and more highs with the shure 545SD-LC

I think your comparison shows the mic differences in a very practical & useful way thank you. I gigged a Unidyne III 545 for years as a vocal mic and loved it. The Shure website says: "The SM57 (1965) and SM58 (1966) were based on the popular Unidyne® III 545 (1959) used for public address systems". Shure also said: "The primary difference between the SM57 and the SM58 is the grille design. The SM58 was designed for vocal applications, utilizing a ball grille that acts as an effective P-pop filter. The SM57 was designed primarily as an instrument microphone where a smaller grille size is preferred". I was given a unidyne3 by the the dj at the hotel I worked at who played records for all the oldies. I've had it for nearly ten years now and have only just started using it to record guitar with and I'm annoyed at myself for not trying it out sooner.
The comparison using the graphs of the recordings in this way is... dubious. Would be better to place them in front of a linear monitor playing back pink noise instead

Very clear comparison! It's not a world of difference, less than I assumed, but overall I like the 545 more for the extra high end clarity, especially with the drums. All depends on what you'd want to use it for I suppose.
I would really hate to split hairs, but IMO it's better to refer to the 545 as the 545 instead of the Unidyne III. I say this because the Unidyne III is the capsule used in various mics including the SM57, SM58, SM7, SM7B, and the 545 to name a few.
Strange. My Unidynes has less highs and more lows :D
This is fantastic. I would love to see an acoustic test as I am on the fence about whether to go vintage and opt for the older copper over the newer aluminum wiring. Acoustic is my use case 100% of the time.
Decent comparison, would have been neat to see a difference between some crunch and acoustic but it's all good.

Be advise when comparing mics it's better 2 do voice, because instrument 2 loud and it is 2 overshadowing.
The 421 has the best eq profile for this cab and guitar!
the main thing i like about the sm57 is it captures what the instrument sounds like in the room. when i record people it's easy to record them and keep there tone with minimal adjustments
It's still basically the 57 that does it...
So, I’d have to say: sounds like it’s in the hands of the recording artist. And which one of these mics would sit right into a mix the best?!? Could change your favorite immediately . For live sound: that 57 has great ProCo Rat modern sizzle and energy. But that 70s Unisphere at the end takes me right back into Sabbath World. Now a guy this good: could he move the 57 back and get a smoother sound, like the 60s and 70s mics? I’d bet he could. And would one of these plop right into your ensembles mix without too much EQ and compression magic? Great video/ THX

I just bought T.bone MB-75. Should be alternative to SM57. Its bright, very bright. A bit too bright for my taste.
I really like the controlled top and on the Electro voice models. Not as fizzy as a lot of the other models. Great video and comparison.
I own a 57, but in this video, I cringe everytime you go back to it. That nasty group of scratchy synthetic sound fizz, I just want to cut it out! I have an old RE-10 I just came across, and am looking forward to trying it out.

I like them all except the 57--sounds so fizzy in the top end, almost like a mediocre distortion pedal.
Wish my old ears were better so I could tell the difference between them.
Goes to show if you want a 70's-80's sound maybe you should get an old mic instead of using modeling and petal trickery to achieve it
