You can see the Rokinon using step autofocus while the Sony uses a smooth autofocus. I much prefer smooth over step.

Good stuff Jason. Cant go wrong for that price. Unless your a real pro wedding / portrait photog making big $$ with those photo shoots/weddings, stay on a budgeht. Invest in MORE budget friendly glass and save for a rainy day :)
You should not sit so close to the camera; especially, with this blister on top of your lip. :)

I thought the rokinon cine lens didn't have Auto Focus, isn't it manual focus only?
Rokinon did an firmware update in 2020 on the FE 85mm f/1.4, which was an upgrade in their focus performance.
I found out Samyang 85 1.4 i a bit noisy while using AFC ! For video is absolutely not good!

Great video. Even though it's a year old - I wanted to say I'm a bit confused why you chose the Sony lens. In all the tests except bokeh you say the Samyang/Rokinon did better, but somehow the Sony is the preferred choice in the end. What made you choose the Sony lens if I may ask. Looking at your test it seems like the Samyang is better nd way cheaper. Seemed like a no-brainer to me, until you chose the Sony as the winner enlighen me sensai.

On APSC, its 1.4 aperture become 2.1.
I have this lens, and I like it on my A7ii. But, Id never get that lens for an a6000. Id look for an actual 85mm equivalent that would be so much easier to tote about. . . isnt that why you have an a6000? They are so wonderfully compact, why bulk it up with that heavy hunk of glass? Us full frame snobs are chugging around with huge Cyclops tubes of glass, while you a6xxx guys can run and jump with your wafercams, and still get amazing shots. Full framers are just short DoF geeks....and, yes, at f/1.4, its soft. At 5.6 and up? tack sharp, in the center, fer sure.The later released Samyang/Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 AF(!) is amazing. It is as fast (or faster) focusing as the Sony 85 f/1.8.

There is a native Samyang/Rokinon 85mm 1.8 lens for apsc sony e mount, it will be great if you could review it, it supposed to be super sharp.
I have this lens on my Nikon DSLR and it's shorter and at 1.4 CA is well controlled. I think they just inserted that mirrorless adaptor to make it fit on Sony cameras. That causes more CA and makes the lens longer. Besides the Nikon version has some sort of chip that makes your camera beep o indicate when the subject in focus.
Is this lens having trouble on focusing on subject. Seems its not doing perfect focus on ur wife. Ur so lucky to have a beautiful wife

It is a fine lens for the money, the picture goes a bit green imgs.love/SY_lens?ka but I consider that part of its character. Works just fine for photo and video. Build quality is good, is heavier than my other lenses but is very very bright.

Taking continuous AF paired with Eye-AF into consideration, makes the Sony 85mm f/1.8 the choice for me! Especially since I snared my minty used copy for $450 from Adorama.

I want to take full body shots and I have seen vids in 85mm lens in full body shots gets the perfect blur .. Do I buy that lens

Sonys color science is purely rubbish.
ehh shooting a cool grey wall and calling sony lenses "cooler" when it looks accurate? clearly the samyang image of the wall looks vintage smh. samyang clearly has a yellow tint, so do sigma lenses. yeah it can be fixed in post but when shooting, samyang/sigma will have yellow tint over image. sony will have more natural looking image.
Just got the 24 1.4 GM and it makes me wanna save up to replace my 85 1.8 with this lol

Ive watched at least a dozen reviews of the samyang/rokinon, and I think yours is my favorite so far. You mentioned a few times that your tests werent scientific, but thats what made them great. If youre not certain which one is focusing faster, or which one has the more accurate colors, that tells me everything I need to know.
Had the Samyang 35mm and it failed to focus on a shoot one time, I tried different bodies and still didn't work, I tried it the next day and it worked. Anyway I sold it because I didn;t want it to happen again on another shoot. Bought the 35 1.4 Zeiss and love it, but now want the GM.

I have the RF version and the Vignetting is super heavy wide open. Can easily be fixed in post but def annoying.
Keep a lens collection no faster than f/1.8. Half the weight, half the price, better in many instances. No point having heavy lenses unless you need them for some niche speciality. Only have exactly what you actually use on a regular basis. You'd be surprised how few lenses you need and therefore need to buy and therefore need to carry.Less really is more.
I got the Samyang 24mm a few months ago for my A7ii, and I was impressed by look of the images, and the quiet focusing was a boon. This 85 looks like a bang for buck winner. The GM would be great, if I had more green to throw around.

I agree. Both Sigma Art 85mm and Samyang 85mm do as good of a job as the Sony, if not better in some areas.

Thanks for the great review - I currently own the Rokinon 85 1.4 but I'm not impressed by it's sharpness at f1.4 - if an aperture of f1.4 is important for me - would you recommend purchasing the Sigma ?
Art 85mm DN and Batis 85mm have best micro contrast but Batis have olso unique colour rendering, you don't have to like it but facts are facts...
