I recently "rescued" a Remo Mondo djembe from someone's trash, cleaned it up, and replaced the head. Can someone tell me how tight I need to make the screws? How do you tune one of these? Thanks.
I think the 14" djembe sounds the best by far. But both the 14 & 16 djembe would have sounded a LOT better on stands to let the sound out of the bottom. In the video the smaller drums are played on stands, and they had the larger stand sitting in the back ground but didn't use it on the 14 & 16.
12" and 10" have better tight sound, 14" and 16" have too much sustain reverb.
I wish I could see a good YouTube video from Remo giving us tonal recommendations for tuning their various djembe sizes. I have a 12" Remo djembe and I just ordered a 14". They are fantastic instruments, but the lack of tuning videos for Remo djembes or video instructions on how to use their included sound control pads in djembes is appalling.
I'm very confused. is there an 18 inch model? the sizing conventions are all over the place on musiciansfriend. Is the first number the width or the depth? whichever model i demo'd rocked the whole damn room. I am definitely getting one. soo... is there an 18?
16 has best sound but is too big. 14 has best size but bass is a bit weak.
I have the 14 like the one in the video. Its the best! I love it. It is the perfect size in my opinion. The 16 had strong overtones that I didn’t like. This one did not ring as much and was closer in sound to the traditional Djembe without the hassle of maintenance. Good luck with your choice. Remo is an excellent brand.

We used this in our marching band competition as our opener (Oak Grove High School Mississippi Marching Band Champions 2017) and it did its job well. However, the head broke after 3 weeks of playing. Just note that this isn't designed to be played for 12 hours each week in direct sunlight, humid air, and constant changing temperatures. And while being played by someone who learned how to play within 2 days.

Paul, How do you think this drum would handle living in a van on a permanent basis? Will it have issues with hot and cold temp swings? Also how do the tuner pieces (dont know the term for the hardware that holds the head on) feel on your legs after playing it for a bit, do they pinch or does it feel like the rope ones?

Thanks for the review! I've used 2-3 of these tuneable Djembes for years as performance accompaniment. They play very well & being able to tune is a huge bonus. E.g. tuning the mid drum to D is great for Celtic inspired fusion. My background is largely AfroCuban so I've had to adjust my playing style to suit the Djembe; Conga style doesn't suit this drum. I'm less fond of the newer synthetic skin though; they're tight but have too much ping & not enough warmth for Djembe. Love your stuff! :)

Hello there. I have not done anything special to the Djembe or tuned it in a special way. I just tuned it to how I like it. There is still a ring present but its not too crazy.
Your Remo 12 has no indication of the well known Remo (key tuned) sustained after ring. Are you playing it out of the box, did you tune a special way or did you attempt the muffling that is recommended to reduce the ringing? I have played the 12 and have a Signature Series 16. My 16 had a pronounced ring and I tamed it to my requirements,with minor attachments of insulation tape under the head, without losing the bass or projection. Just wondering??

On my output sound, I'm listening to your demo through 12-inch vintage JBL's pushed by tube amps. I got to say you are really excellent, I enjoyed your demo and explanation. But listening on my speakers, it sounded like your 12 inch Djembe had more bottom end and sweet overtones than the 14 inch. The 14 had a flatter sound with earlier decay, and less overtone. . Speaking only from my perception, and great speakers.

thanks for the fantastic lesson. you are the best djembe teacher and performer in the universe!! so, i have a question. what do you think about the busking djembe? i wanna buy a remo djembe. i think 12inch model is more useful for the outdoor because it's more portable but the 14 inch sound great.. so i ask your opinion.
