Those cities and states who benefited from both the jobs and the power generated at these nuclear power plants should have some moral responsibility to host the waste generated as a result. By all means, compensate the cities who didn't bargain on 100-year storage of this waste in their jurisdiction, transfer that radioactive waste into dry canisters ASAP to reduce the risk on site, insist on thick-walled canisters that can also be monitored on site, and bury those dry casks underground like they do in Germany for greater security, but please avoid a "mobile Chernobyl". Any transport of the waste, by barge or highway or rail, will put tens of thousands of people at risk of a radiological accident. Certainly that kind of transport risk is not justified for merely an "interim" storage facility which is no real solution at all, given the duration of some of the half-lives involved.

Decommissioning = Put a lock on the gate, take the money and run. Screw the community. Let someone else deal with the massive contamination and clean up the mess 60 years from now. SAFSTOR = Not safe, not stored. Consolidated Interim Storage = Nuclear utilities washing the blood off their hands and the compliant government taking title of the waste to loot the taxpayers to pay for it.

It would help if NRC regulations didn't demand 3000X lower radiation levels for recycling Nuclear steel and waste metals than the EPA does for Oil & Gas steel & metals contaminated with the worse Radium isotopes from their operations. It sure helps when you have enough cash to buy every politician, regulator, MSM outlet and even NGOs like Greenpeace. i.e.their fracked, toxic Natural gas is exempt from: The Clean Water Act. Safe Drinking Water Act. Clean Air Act. Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Emergency Planning Community Right to Know Act. National Environmental Policy Act.
