A month or so ago they managed to run such reactor for 5 seconds. Doesn't sound much but scientists say it was big step forward. I became believer since then, of course we need to go full nuclear with current reactors and gen 4 ones (MSR, fMSR, useTh fuel instead of uranium, etc). We will cook the earth if it doesn't happen, China already put online long awaited molten salt reactor working on thorium fuel. They will get most power from them by 2050 which are really really good news :)

When you include the cost of waste storage - which will last for well over 10,000 years - nuclear is not cost effective. Deadly poisonous nuclear waste lasts longer than all of written human history! Economic collapse or worse war and then what? Tidal and wind are the best short term solutions. Thorium reactors should be developed as well - no waste or bombs.

I don’t think ideology should drive energy strategies as it is the case in every western countries, Germany and France included. We are still to see real end-to-end assessments cost/risk/benefit of every source, and these don’t exist. Renewable energies (solar, wind) cheerleaders focus on exploitation while conveniently forgetting the damages caused by the extraction of required minerals or by the destruction and disruption of submarine environnement (offshore wind farms) among others. Nuclear lobbies are well known for downplaying decommissioning costs and waste storage issues. Still missing as well is a global case with a population at 15-20 bn earthlings and the need for energy it will entail. As for France, ditching nuclear energy doesn’t make any sense, and investing in it is still the best way to improve technologies, while moving to a more balanced mix.
It is strange that France, who have been running small nuclear reactors on their submarines for decades, have to wait until 2035 for civil ones. The UK is the same, in spite the fact, Rolls Royce have been producing nuclear power plants for RN submarines, also for decades, they too, are not ready to make small civil nuclear plants!
There is another elephant in the room so to speak: the cost of decommissioning the old ones in France. It can be done, but it is expensive.

I am so irritated with our governments, why is it that knowing we need to change our energy sources they have done little to change. In Belgium our reactors are old and need to go but nothing has been put in place to take up the energy needs. So they keep the reactors running as they argue over putting in the infrastructure for things like hydrogen to replace gas and talk about building a new gas plant - still the planet burns
With energy storage technology/solutions coming along in leaps and bounds wind and solar should be sufficient along with hydro and geothermal. Safe, cheap and green.
The newest french reactors have problems. Like the one in Taishan in China. And now Finland is building 6 of the problematic types. I can't wait to see what happens

Not ideal but there are so stringest safety regulation that even a minor problems requires a shutdown.
