This 100mm Macro is a really nice lens. It has nice IQ. Weather resistance is a bonus for outdoor shooters. But the major drawback for my taste is horrible manual focusing abilities. The focus ring is really hard to use for macro or other closeup shots.
Great review John! Safe to say I'm a big fan of mine. Aside from the odd focus hunt (no limiter on the WR version) from closest to infinity and back, it performs flawlessly for me. Great colours, sharpness, contrast. I found it quite good for some wildlife photography last summer and chasing the dogs around on the beach!

wow those photos are really nice. That is a fine review. One of the first lenses I bought for my Pentax K10D back in the day was the Tamron 90mm f/2.8. I use it for portraits. I don't think it's as sharp as the Pentax but it does a pretty good job. What camera did you use for these photos? I currently use a Pentax K-5II.

Thanks for this review. I like this lens. Just one thing, not all Limited series lenses have an aperture ring, i have 21mm, 35 and 70mm ltd and they don't.
The lens seems Ghetto, with the plastic and the screw type auto-focus sound, but OMFG its the sharpest macro I have seen reviewed. You are zooming in over 10x larger and the detail looks outstanding. Is that detail because of the K1 sensor or the lens? I am guessing its because of the lens.
12:05: will it still hold up against water if lens hood is removed?
I have this lens and was using it today. I really like it. I had not noticed the internal shaking, and I paused this video and went and shook my lens. It did shake internally, but it was very soft and slight. So I am not sure what to make of that.
PF (lateral chromatic aberation) is not an issue with the D-FA 100mm F/2.8 WR Macro on my K-1, just turn "Lat Chromatic Ab Adj" to ON. Poof! it's gone! ;-)

All the Limited lens do not have aperture ring. Limited FA lenses have, Limited DA lenses don't.

I just picked up the Pentax 645d what lens do you recommend for portraits?
I love the lens. I have two copies, neither have that shake noted. I have used it in full rainstorms in Costa Rica and 5 months camping across Australia and well beyond. No dust or moisture issues at all. What I REALLY love about this lens is that it weighs about 1/3 less than my other 1:1 macro lenses and uses 49mm filters. Images I have taken with this lens have already won some rather prestigious nature photography contests. Used on K1, K3, KIIs, K10

I had the exact same thoughts about the lens. It's pretty looking and so compact; but PF at large apertures was way worse than the Tamron DI 90mm I'd had previously. Worse than the old Tamron 90mm adaptall lens I had for that matter. I got the Pentax in a fire sale for £90 and sold it "as new" on eBay for £280 which was nice!
My version of this lens does not rattle, hope you sent it back. Fantastic lens, nice photos!
I love this lens. Currently on the K3. I used it on a sunny day out taking pictures of marathon runners. When they get into 2-3 meters distance, I found that if I pre focused it, then I could easily manually fine focus the rest and get some really really sharp images. Incredibly sharp and smooth lens =)

Your reviews are usually very useful and I appreciate the work you put into them. This review is particularly good because you avoid the distracting laughing and hyperbole of some of your more recent reviews. Keep up the good work but please consider using the tone you use here on other videos.
I had both this and Tamron 90mm macro lens. I find them equally sharp. I don't need WR that often so I went with Tamron - focus limiter is big plus - and sold Pentax.
Thanks for this video. I am looking these days for a 100mm Macro by Pentax. Some say take the old FA100, the next come up with the DFA or next generation DFA WR. Its not the WR I really need and one guy calls its lens "cordless screwdriver" in case of the loud noise by the autofocus.
Right it's not a limited series but it should be it's that good! :) As a proud owner of this lens I must say that it's just gorgeous! I cannot hear any vibration or wobbling sound that much by the way, I can hear something but it's barely noticeable. You are absolutely right about dust, it attracts the dust on the focus ring like a magnet! I always try to clean that area because it's a potential source of dust particles for mirror when you change lens. Sure it has purple fringing like limiteds but in comparison to what this lens does in other aspects, it's just a fun to play with in lightroom. Hope to see other reviews, great work!!!

Hey, love your videos and how you explain about the Pentax lenses. I have a Canon 80D and I found a bunch of Pentax lenses, I use them with a $15.00 adapter, and I love them, very sharp and efficient stuff. Just bought a 100mm macro pentax, do you have a page with macro stuff you'd taken using that lens?

Interesting lens, David. Like Bassangler73, I also have a Tokina 100mm which is a sweetheart of a lens, but definitely more pricey. I also have another interesting lens (Nikon 70-210 f/4 A/F) that I really want to play around with - I haven't had an opportunity yet. It's like new, and they can be had pretty cheaply too.

Hey David have you used the Asahi Pentax 50mm 1.4?
I love this lens, but due to the long focusing throw along with the noise it can be very challenging to use as a short Tele. Outside its great, you might scare some birds away and that's about it, but trying to use this lens inside in dim lighting it can be very frustrating. I tried to use this lens with a 1.4X extender once and I almost went nuts. I think a focus limiter for a few hundred extra bucks might have been worth it. Since the lens does not a focal limiter, the best thing to do is to focus manually until you get pretty close to where you think you are in focus, then let the AF go. However this does not always work because lets say you are outdoors and the wind is blowing. You try to focus on an insect and leaves, flowers or other stuff keep jumping in front of your lens. This lens will try to focus on these thing, by moving the lens all the way in one direction, then all the way in the other direction sometimes several times until it locks focus. In situations like that I would just switch to manual and save yourself the aggravation.
I Am using a fotga adaptor to adapt this lens to Sony e mount. I can not control the aperture manually.why is that?
