Pentax K 5 IIs DSLR (Body Only) Reviews from YouTube

Pentax K5-IIs Hands on Review and Features Overview
King of The K Series - The Still Oh So Impressive Pentax K-5 in 2020, 10 Years After Its Release
Pentax K-5 iis First Impressions
Nikon D7100 vs Pentax K-5 II S
I had the camera for 8 years and never had problems with the AF unlike my Nikon D7000.
".modicum of control." I like that!
Without any doubts the K5IIs continues to be the best camera of Pentax
No issues with the auto focus other than in very low light (as most AF systems do) where they search and are slower. Very high quality camera. Used Pentax's since my fathers S1a. Compact, strong and good value for money. Used for studio and outdoors. Only real problem is the availability of lenses from other suppliers where Canon and Nikon rule.
I never had an AF issue with my Pentax K-5IIs  except if I forgot to turn-on the shake reduction.
i have had a k50 for a few months and its AF is great, just recieved a k5ii and i havent had any problems with its AF besides tuning for my lenses which i did on the k50 too
I've been going through ur reviews .on of the best reviews on YouTube
Focus peaking ?
Hi Spyros, thanks for the review. At the time I have owned 4 Pentax cameras (K110D, K-R, K10D and K5D) and I must say almost every one of those (the K10D I haven't used it much yet as I bought it as a second body) miss shots as you say as the K5-IIS does. It is an "extra" feature of Pentax cameras I believe. I do use my cameras for trips and also for motorsports, and I have to say that what you say, 1/5 photos are missing usually, or even 1 from 4 images you know it's not gonna be a good one. At least it also happens with my K5, and I love the images that it produces, some are just amazing; but you also know that anyone with a Canon or Nikon won't miss a shot meanwhile you with your Pentax will at the racetrack (usually this is what happened to me), because of the AutoFocus. I've heard what you say about the Pentax K50 and I hope it's true and so Pentax did a good job with the AF finally in newer bodies. Never the less, I might go for a Pentax K5-II or IIS as my old K5 has had some issue and I loved that camera. Thanks for the review!
Is the K5ii a good upgrade for the K20D? My K20D is having some issues the last few days (its over 100k clicks) How are the prices for used ones?
I've owned the Pentax K-7 and now the Pentax K-5 ii. Both are excellent cameras and neither had any focusing issues. Must have just been your test unit. My previous camera was a Nikon but now in the APSC format I would only have Pentax, I love the menu system (simple to use and learn. Overall seriously good cameras and bomb proof. Oh and it's weather sealed too, bonus Yes, I guess I'm a Pentax fanboy, sorry. Great review too.
I've owned the k50 and now own the k5ii and do a fair bit of macro work and as you will know when you use autofocus in macro it has to be accurate, I find this camera excellent and as you have said the colours are great.
Hi Spyros. I still use a K-5. I can't buy new cameras, cos they're too expensive, but I was thinking of a used K-5 iis or K-3. Do you think it's worth the upgrade? Also, what affordable telephoto for sports/action? I have tried the 50-200 WR and don't think it's very good!
I noticed that review unit came with the DA* 55 1.4. That lens is notorious for autofocus issues. I went through 2 units and eventually returned that lens for a different lens b/c of the issues.
I have the Pentax K5ii and have not really noticed any focus problem with the auto focus mode.
Yia sou Spyro!  Thank you for your review.  helped me buy my first DSLR.  Just got a great bundle price from Adorama for under $600 (k5iis, grip, flash, extended warranty, etc.) but no lens.  Which lens did you use in your bar test I noticed f2.8 in your sample images. primes or da* zoom?  Many thanks and I appreciate your detailed reviews!
Hey Spyros, I have a K20D. I have had no issues with the autofocus. I want to buy the K-5IIs because it's at a very good price on Amazon right now just as you predicted it would. I would eventually change to a brand that offers me a full frame camera but not because I don't like Pentax.
i have a pentax k5ii s it is about a year and a half old. I am not having any auto focus problems as you have experienced. The camera is absolutely fantastic, better than i expected,my previous camera was a k10 and my k5 blows it away and and the colors are unbelievable.
Hi Spyros, I am intending to buy a DSLR. but i am very much confused with Pentax k 50 and k 5IIs. I would be glad if you could share a thought on this. ( just as an intro: I'm a hobby photographer wanting to go pro). Thanks in advance.
Hi Spyros, just ordered a K5iis from B&H. Currently selling for $700 INCLUDING the Pentax battery grip and a fast 64G Scandisk card. Superb value if, like me, you want great still quality but only do occasional fun video shooting. Love your channel btw.
I use a 18-250 lens on my K-5, love it would recommend
"More than adequate sensor?!" The Canon and Nikon fan boys were squabbling about DXO being biased. But topping out the DXO test chart was this "thing." Eventually; "I can't stands it no more." So I bought one - a Pentax K5. Bang. My Canon 60D hit the floor as fast as gravity could fetch it. The K5 sensor was blinking brilliant . . . but then the thing I hadn't expected; and you are right; there isn't a spec for this. The moment I picked it up; it grabbed me and dragged me across the floor; like one of those little torpedo things that scuba divers use to pull themselves along under water. It said "take a picture of something NOW!" And it was like that everyday afterwards. Even the mock plastic leather felt better than the Canon. It was so utterly engaging. It wanted to take pictures and it dragged me along behind it. Oh I had to fix it under warrenty for that silly battery thing. Then it worked for 4 or 5 years. Then it did that blurry picture thing after switching on. It needed a new sensor to fix that. Gulp. Then it went on for another couple of years; then the stabilization packed up again. It was heartbreaking. I couldn't justify a sensor again. A new sensor was more than buying a new one. That was that. I did Canon again for a little while more. Right now I am doing Panasonic M4/3. But oh I miss that feeling of being dragged along looking for a picture.
DISTRACKING you need it?
bought mine 2 years ago with an catseye for 250€ and use it for lokal festivities and stuff. add a fast prime and the world is yours! AF is also not that bad considering that most of my pictures are taken in low light like 1/15 f2.0 iso 2000 low light. that SR is surly something i underestimated when i joined the pentaxians. its always funny when the people wonder why there is no flash and see the result :) hope corona is a thing of the past soon, i miss crowded festivals! i know iso 2000 is to much for some pixelpeepers but im hunting memorable moments not 11/10 super magazine prints ;)
The DA 21mm f3.2 limited is on my K5 all the time.
I still have my K-5, but I think the best of that model is the K-5 IIs.
I have a K5 since 8 years. I bought the camera for my first trip to the Sahara desert and since then I took it with me to more than 10 long Africa trips. My K5 has now many scratches and some buttons get stick sometimes, cause of all the desert dust. But it still works, I think nothing can kill this camera. I thought about "replacing" the K5 with the new K3 III, better/faster Autofocus and stuff, but don't know if it's worth the money.
Add me to the list - I got the K-5 back in 2011 or something . and never felt the need to buy another DSLR. My favourite lens with the K5 is the 20-40mm limited. It's a great combo, both weather sealed and beautiful pictures. 16MP is enough, the DNG files are great. The only drawback that I can think of is that it doesn't save the files very fast.
Due to watching this video I bought myself a k-5 for last Christmas. I paid $300 for the body & kit lens, but both were rated at excellent ++. I'm delighted. Thank you, sir.
Is Pentax k 5ii is worth to buy in 2021 over nikon d750?
My first K-5 survived dips in the sea and a river, then finally died in the sea. I then had k-5 iis which was even better, with sharper images. Then moved on to K-3 ii. They're all great cameras, but forget the video funciton and I think the AF is the main letdown. It's not super snappy, but improves depending on the lens choice. These functions aside, they achieve more than the Canon 7d ii in a lighter, more compact body. As an almost "disposable" hacker camera you're not afraid to get wet, drop, ding, lose or get stoled these days, just grab two and who cares!
Hey I just picked up the k 5 2 with a 50mm getting some pretty nice stuff I do have one weird thing I can't figure out. In live view the camera does the zoom in function every time on autofocus. Is there no way to turn that off? I find it a little slow and unnecessary. I also snagged an 18 to 55 DC Sigma brand new for 15 bucks. It's quite nice for a lens. I'm really pissed off that it does not have a aperture ring. Because if it did I would use it for other cameras in a second. But I think they do make some adapters with apertures for mirrorless.
My 2 favorite lenses right now are the Asahi SMC 50mm f1.4 and the Takumar 135mm f2.5.
Just got K5 delivered yesterday. It's in great condition cosmetically and it came with 4 lens. Hope it deliveres well.
Yes k5 is a great dslr. Had my lens button repaired when it broke. Have the 15mm, 35mm and 70mm limiteds - like the 15mm best. Also have the 16-85mm as a weather sealed walk about lens. I don’t think the k5 is the limiting thing in my photography - it’s me! Im enjoying your videos - thanks.
K5 and K3ii owner. I literally get one in-focus image out of 10 attempts auto or manual focus K5 or K3ii, the cameras simply cannot focus at all.
Replaced K3 with K5iis, more sharpess, better color and noise. WB is amazing good no matter what lens you use, very easy for after edit work. This may be the best DSLR in term of color in CMOS pentax. Recommend to own it if you are extremely emphasis on correct color reproduction. Loving your channel subscribed
My K5 is awesome. I love the oddball FA 77mm f/1.8. Also the manual focus A series 50 f/1.4 is sweet as butter. Everything else I shoot is Tamron. I have a legacy Tamron 90mm f/2.5 adaptall 2. It's super awesome and was my go to lens for portraits before I started picking up AF lenses.
This is my second comment here. I have just bought the K-5 for the second time. I had it ages ago. You're right! Maaaaan, it feels like a modern camera. I can't believe it's already 10 years old! I manage to get one for a good price which includes the 18-135mm. I went for a photo walk last night. Only gripe is that the live view lags a bit. On the same day I received it, I saw a very cheap K-5 with the legendary Pentax K SMC 28mm 3.5 locally. Long story short, I bought it for much less than market value of the K 28mm 3.5. It was a good day for bargains!
Been looking at a k5 for 250 d700 for 275 or kp on sale for 650 new. Top Choice the only thing Pentax has on sale this weekend is the k70 which is kind of disappointing and they took $100 off the KP I was hoping they were going to take something off on the gr 3 Happy Thanksgiving
Yes Fuji here raw need s. Irendent. Delevolper Interested in Pentax.
Hi love your videos i just picked up a k5 and was wondering what's a good zoom sports lens
Love your , your reviews are pretty much spot on. I LOVE my k5 IIs, and with the limited lenses it's a bad ass camera. Cheers!
Hello, Ed I really like Your perspective on the cameras, and no bs pixel peeper mentality. I just ordered Pentax k5 iis and would like to ask you if this camera is good enough for paying geeks. I only have the Canon 30d with 50 f1.4 but it's very limiting. I had to sell my 5d ii and iii but things happen, and want to get back into shooting. Sorry I m sure you get this a lot, just wanted your opinion on the image quality and the ad.
Went out with my dad and his new k5iis on the landscape photos this thing produces are unbelievable. What a really good camera this is. Really pleasant to shoot with. Intuitive, well built, well designed, easy to get good results very quickly. Considering swapping out my nikon dx system for Pentax now. Seriously!
thank you :-) after using it for a while now . could you please tell us if you recommend it
If I was to choose just one pro photographer or camera reviewer to make me want to buy a camera solely on his reviews, it would be Mr Thomas. I'd call him the Robert De Niro of the photographic world, tell it like it is, no non-sense, straight to the point, down to earth and honest opinions based on his respected experiences. Mr Thomas, you are a man's man.
Hi! First of all I love your reviews. I was about to go for a Canon 6D full frame camera when I decided to switch gears and go for the K-5ii S. I have a question though. The Pentax branded Speedlites available for the K-5ii s are very expensive and the generic ones such as Yongnuo and Zeiko are available for $50-100. Which one would you recommend if I want one on a budget and is P-TTL compatible as well? Thanks!
I like your reviews. Your review of the Tamron 17-50 is great also. I am not a Pro-Photographer and decided to go for the Pentax K-30 - I did not regret it, it is a great camera. The fact that you cannot correct Front / Backfocus in the Menu of a Canon EOS 60D is shocking as my "Entry Level" :) K-30 is capable to do so and I would miss this feature very much.
I have been strongly attracted to Pentax always. I am about to purchase an oil-stained-sensor, crappy-service driven Nikon d7000. Pentax is better, but there is one very special particularity that just made me run from you guys: the brand could disappear tomorrow. Samsung invested heavily to rescue it, and they command Pentax now. The funny-phones guys managing the brand of my camera? I don't think so! Ok Nikon, make me repent, I know your customer service will make me curse as ever before!
Nice review! I use Canon 5D II and I would like to make a comment: Canon 24-105/4 is not a sharp lens. It's a great outdoor walkaround lens due to its weight and zoom range. However it ranks 2nd worst in sharpness among my lens collection (sharper than 16-35/2.8 II but not as sharp as everyone else: 70-200/4, 70-200/2.8II, 85/1.8, Tamron 90/2.8, Carl Zeiss 135/2.8, Sigma 50/1.4.) The difference in sharpness is probably produced by a difference in lenses.
Lol! Great review! Got both k5 II and k01. Love pentax.
Eye wink 9:38. haha

How about a new video with your thoughts on the Pentax K5 II s in retrospect?
a bit higher price than the D7000 but the pictures look like the D7100 and a bit cheaper! leave the video part for the canon users to brag about but I got the D800 and the pictures are my fav thing and I rarely use the video modes at all! If I shot video I would buy sony or canon camera and not use the photocameras for that at all!
Ha ha ha. You can say it. It is that good. I have nothing in Pentax gear but I am keeping a close eye on this machine. This camera kicks everyone asses to the never never land so far.
Hi Ed, Phil here from the UK. Love the videos you're posting here especially the passion you show for your craft. I'm a proud K-5 owner and have some cash to spend on a new body. How has the K-5IIs been performing for you over the past few months? I'm tempted to get one but holding out for the new alleged imminent 24Mp K-3. I like shooting birds/wildlife with my DA* 300mm so wondered if you've got any advice? Cheers
Canon 5D Mark II to me has always been a bit over rated - but you are right the K-5 iis or most Pentax stuff has been underrated - and without the AA filter images bound to be more clear and now everyone following suit which is nice. Raw support for Fuji X has now been resolved - Have the X100 and X20 - K-5 iis is a great choice and good value for the $ - just Pentax has not done well in looks on many of their bodies but K-5 iis is fine - So now the competition is the Nikon D7100
Snowboarding. How do you think that this would handle filming winter snow sports?
As they don't see it now Sony will take over the entire market
Both great, but I plumped for Pentax. Mainly because nearly everyone else has a Nikon or Canon. Got a hug from the official photographer at a wedding last year as she noticed me using a Pentax. Comforting.
0:19 first time "SIMP" was used ever .
Ricoh marketing is the only issueotherwise Pentax is amazing.
long live PENTAX !
here in my place if you arent into photography chances are you'll never know that pentax exists
Guys, a really good review. Informative and entertaining. Keep up with this format and standard. Well done.
in this basic test, the ISO wasn't done entirely correct, straight the camera, I agree. In post both are about the same, especially since you don't need to go that high via ISO to get the same image but have more light and less noise.
Looking back to this video, it is interesting that Nikon quality control has gone down, there are many problems with Nikon cameras. Recall, denial, unhappy loyal customers. Why not a mass movement to another brand, GLASS! accessories etc. Nikon are loosing approx. 26% of the market each year and getting worse.Pentax might be worth looking at.
Love the video guys very creative
Tried em both. Pentax any day.
Alamby is so cute
hy dear I am from india
6:30 bridge!
I use both Nikon and Pentax. The best of two worlds.
pentax k50 vs nikon d3300
Your reviews are so clever and fun that I can watch all of 'em for sheer entertainment, even if I don't give a flying fk about the camera you are reviewing. Does it make sense?
nikon d 7100 way better camera and better quality photos
Please do a K-3II review! vs some nikon
I own a Pentax k5iis with several star lenses and limited lenses. I would say the most impressive part is its colour when you shoot in JPG. It is so convenient when you go to travel and take thousands of pictures. Save your time to do the PS job. The all weather seal is also adorable. I can take it to the beach or bushes without any worries about damaging it. However, the only disapppointment is no full frame for Pentax at the moment. The new K1 is expected to be released in the first quater of this year but it's also can be expected that the price would not be cheap(In compare with Canon 6D, 5D3, or sony A7). I'm thinking of switching to Canon but its too hard to let the Pentax go. Its just a too good camera for its price.
