Brendrum, I have a Mapex Metal Piccolo 13x3.5 snare. If I play that drum in a snare stand vs playing it on top of my 14 inch SNARE in the snare stand, I like the sound better!! Why is that ? I am a 69 year old Rookie ( actually not a complete Rookie, having played drums 55 years ago and now returned as a retirement enjoyment). No matter how I tune the Piccolo snare , I can't get that nice less resonant snappy sound as when I place it on top of the larger snare in the stand.

Cool review! I also own one. This snare was the first snare I purchased as a separate entity after I had played drums for a few years. This drum really helped me play better because at the time it really sounded fantastic to my ear. Really cracked and sounded like snare sounds I was hearing on Primus and 311 albums. I still own mine but have not played it in many years. My sound, skills and ear have changed a lot since then but I still remember learning a lot from this drum. Definitely a great drum for the price, not super versatile and kind of a loud crack, but with some control and some tweaking you can get some cool sounds of the drum.
Thanks for the review! I was actually considering getting this snare recently, but I think I’ll pass. I have the maple one and am trying to get it dialed in so it sounds great at all tunings. I’ll fiddle with the heads and strainer.
I had this snare back in probably 2008 when I played in metal bands. Always got so many compliments on it.

higher tuning piccolo is great for hyper fast blast beats drumming...
Nice. I like deep snares, but searching for a sidesnare, which gives the "kick ass shock" when hitting it and that - at very high pitch - damn, maybe thats it.
now i'm wondering what kind of hats he's playing..

It sounds great like many piccolo snare drums do, until you see the price. Then your like I can push down on my snare head with my stick and make it sound like that.
Love this sound...can’t understand why people go for 14x8” snares. Prefer this sound. Depends on the music you play, I suppose.

Kind of amazed at this thing. This is the first time I’ve found myself liking the sound of a shallow snare. Usually whenever I hear these things they don’t sound good at all
