Maybe you could have blown the dust away from the processor fans...
Do I have to back up my computer before installing or is that not necessary?
Envoy Pro did not work at all for me. Just DOA. Glad I had bootable backups on external disks. This thing is a piece of crap. Also the 480 GB Aura Pro X ran hot and caused kernel panics. also a piece of crap that sucked twice the power idling that the original Apple SSD does.
Does anyone else have the same problem when you go to download OS X EL CAPITAN the ssd doesn’t show up????
any issues with sleep function? I've read in a few places that when you install IWC AURA and close the lid, the macbook shuts down.
Why not making a bootable backup with super duper to the new SSD, then swap the SSDs, finished. Why installing via USB-Stick?
Should I do this? Or are there too many problems?
I heard apple's part is proprietary after doing a ton of research on my own. Sucks but yeah it just sucks. I miss apple when it wasn't crapple
Hey I need some help I installed the new ssd just fine in my 2015 pro retina but when I try bolt up internet recovery my time machine backup and new ssd cannot be found. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
how lazey didn't even clean it out when he had it open
I have a doubt on it. I´ve reading that I need to install the High Sierra before install the Aura Pro. How can do that? Using the envoy?
accidentally removed the thermal pad. will I have a problem later?
This upgrade is not great the SSD's read and write speed is slower than the one you are replacing!
Loving my Aura SSD 1 TB....works perfectly! Thanks Macsales!
I bought and installed the Aura SSD but it only worked several hours after installing it and it crashed. Technical support could not help solve the cause, so I returned it for a refund.
What can be done with the old SSD? I know there is this external case for it from OCW that is pricey AF. But could it be mount on a Desktop PC motherboard? Is it standard?
did you backup your computer first using time machine? or will it work without doing that?
is the OWC the only compatible SSD for Mac? will this work on it? https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX300-525GB-Internal-CT525MX300SSD4/dp/B01L80DH4G/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1493311287&sr=1-5&keywords=Intel+Optane
Would this void warranty if I bought a new old stock MacBook Pro? Saw a deal for one at bestbuy and want to upgrade from 128 to 480
please replay me am from India i have MacBook pro 13inch retina early 2015 model will this OWC Aura 480GB SSD really works??? because i approached my near my mac store they told me that """"""you can't""""" able to upgrade both the SSD and ram thats y am asking this question please replay me......soon....please.....

(I receive a small commission if you purchase these, but feel free to buy whatever tools & paste you like - These are just what I used!)
*Isopropyl Alcohol* - Buy this at a grocery store or pharmacy anything with an alcohol content over about 70% is fine. At $0.70 its WAY cheaper than buying the special electronic stuff for $15+!
*Compressed Air* - Again buy at a hardware store and its WAY cheaper. The one I got was about $5 at home depot. Just make sure its compressed air only, and doesn't have anything else in there.

Thank you for including ALL the missteps in your video. It makes me feel better to know that the problems I have aren't just because of me. Would you have had an easier time if you had cloned the SSD before you installed the new drive? I saw that you formated the new drive as macOS extended but Apple recommends using their newer APFS system for SSD performance.
for the Prices owc is not worthy, i used a nvme western digital black with adaptator and runs at 2900 Mb/s
This troubleshooting was really helpful. Thank you for that :)
Experienced the same "horrors" in installing a new OWC Aura Pro X2 1tb on my 2013 MBP Retina. A question though, I noticed that my boot up time got considerably slower (1:15secs). did you experience this slow boot up too?
Hello mate, thanks for the video. Which SSD is the faster one? The aura Pro X2 or the original Apple SSD
Thanks for the real life speed test with the photo export! That is a good enough difference for me. I will probably get this one.
Hi bro, my macbook pro retina mid 2014, I bought that SSD 1TB, but it did not recieved new SSD, what should I do now, bro? I tried to install many times but could not.
Great video but you forgot to mention the whole point is to add more SSD space
What about that sleep and wake problem ?
i am planning to upgrade my macbook pro 14 retina mid 2014 , will owc 2TB support this model MacBookPro 11,2 ? please let me know. the apple website says upto 1 TB only.
Does it work on macOS Catalina?
Have you found any way to calibrate the drive to get that CPU performance back. I don't know what the 802 vs 770 equates to in real world but it seems like a pretty significant drop. Also, do you know in what use case that drop would come in to play?
My fully speced out MBP 15" from 2014 has around 900 mb/s for both read and write.
Not meaning to be pedantic but I think it would have helped for you do do a bit more research on the differences between hard drives and solid state drives. It sounds kind of like you think the SSD is just an upgrade to the current technology that is the HDD when they are two completely separate entities. Very simply put the hard drive is a moving disk, among other things, that stores data in various locations and moves to said locations to get the data stored there. An SSD has no moving parts and stores data in locations called cells which require no physical movement to reach. This is why SSDs are so much faster than HDDs, HDDs have to travel a certain distance to get data whereas SSDs are able to locate it easier and faster because the data and location thereof are fixed. Major detriments to hard drives are the are composed of moving parts and are easier to incapacitate through normal wear and tear and they are much slower in reading, writing data, and finding data not to mention being much cheaper in terms of cost per GB. Benefits of SSDs are they are blazing fast compared to HDDs and they are more difficult to break because of the inherent nature of their build and having no moving parts to be displaced or broken entirely. It should be noted SSDs are more expensive in cost per GB and cells begin to "break" or become corrupted over time. This will leave you with less storage space overall but the rate at which these cells corrupt should not have any bearing on whether or not you are deciding to get an SSD. IMO SSDs are far superior to HDDs and are very much worth the investment. All you need to do is think of the efficiency that comes with an SSD rather than an HDD. With all of the time you have spent in your life waiting for your snail of a hard drive to load microsoft word you could have amassed another week of surfing the web, watching Netflix, doing something productive, or slacking off. An upgrade is definitely worth it and shipping product with an SSD instead of an HDD should become standard practice within the next 20 years.
Edit: If you're going to be handling internal computer components you should ALWAYS wear an anti-static bracelet! A single static shock is enough to absolutely destroy your computer! a static-electric shock is probably the quickest way to completely fuck up your computer or pretty much any part housed internally. Not a cheap fix!
Edit 2: Man you gotta do some research before making a vid like this, no anti-static warning, not knowing you can't boot a computer with no OS to boot it on, constantly referring to the SSD as an HDD. There's a dearth of info on how to do everything in this vid without potentially obliterating your viewers' expensive, very hard to replace, hardware from 2015! You should also note this is the last model of Macbook Pro made with upgrade-able hardware so an uninformed viewer doesn't buy this SSD for their 2017 Macbook Pro just to take it apart and realize it wont do anything!
o h ok hold on please at 3:54. I have the same macbook pro retina display 2015 and the SSD is not going all the way in. How hard did you push it in??
Good job. Thank you! You helped me a lot. I just changed my old ssd for Aura and it went smooth, no hassles. I didn't have to press cmdR...just after turning it on, I pluged in the time machine back up disk and it did all in 2 hours with no need to press anything...
Have you had any issues with the SSD upgrade over the last year?
If your MAC was previously running anything before (not including) MAC OS High Sierra your MAC will NOT see the drive and you need to call OWC so they can rent you a drive that your MAC WILL see! Just a heads up ;)
So what did you replace this SSD with? The Jetdrive? Or just a used 7+17 pin Macbook SSD?
Thanks for the info very helpful 👍👍👍
My Mac came with an OWC aura 240g SSD, I changed it to Samsung 1tb. I want to use the Aura SSD as an external hard drive enclosure but cannot find any compatible with OWC SSD. There has to be an adapter or something , has anyone ever done this ? Can you leave me a link or part # thanks
So what is the alternative for the owc ssd 2X pro ???
I bought one a couple of months ago, and same story, it failed after a month
I just experienced my OWC Aura 240GB SSD drive crashing on my 2011 Macbook Air after just under 1 year from being installed. My Mac guru here told me the controller was overheating, and he has been unable to retrieve data from it. I'm having to now face going through very expensive professional data recovery (more than $2K). I am kicking myself for not having backed up my data and want to cry!! Just never thought this would happen in such a short time. They will not refund my money back but only send me another drive, even though I already shelled out for a new one while traveling abroad when this happened. I think these testaments speak to the lack of quality of their drives - BEWARE!!
i’ve been without my laptop for more than a month b/c the OWC ssd’s fail repeatedly. if this one doesn’t work, i will request a full refund and order a transcend ssd.
I had an OWC Mercura electra 240 G in my gaming rig die on me after about a year and a half of use. Went to a WD blue m.2 in hopes of better reliability.
They are the WORST....most of the products are junk. Turds with 5 year warranty is still a turd.
hi I have a macbook air which does not power on due to some power issues and I have some data on it.
If i transfer my ssd to my friends macbook same model will my operating system boot up on his machine?
BEWARE. I'm getting my third OWC SSD for my 2011 MacBook Air cause it broke three fuck'n times. The new one has a 5 year warranty. I always backup my data so I was lucky
Great comments! I just recently had a 180 gt Mercury 3G ssd for a Mac mini die after 9 months of operation. As you mentioned customer service was very nice and with a standard 3 year warranty I don't see it as a problem. However, I hope that with each return they strive to improve reliability. Bad news travels quickly nowadays over the internet!!
Thanks so much for this review!!! I was thinking of buying a 1TB ssd but was a little skeptical. Thanks for taking the time to post.
I've never had a problem with OWC stuff and I've been buying from them for over 15 years now.
I've bought a few things from owc, never had a problem.
Could you plz suggest me some good ssd's for macbook air mid 2013 13"
Looking to buy some cheap one, its too costly.....!
Maybe your drive died by being handled too rough by the operating system with no T.R.I.M. mode enabled. Apple only permits chosen and approved drives to work with T.R.I.M enabled. There's a program called "Trim Enabler" which enables you to activate this feature regardless what type of SSD you are running.
What are good SSD's for a MacBook Pro 2012 retina ?
This is not a SATA 3 ssd, it's pci express based ssd.
Is this compatible with X1 Carbon ?
Is it still working? I've heard some people saying things about the ssd slowing down and causing the mac to crash.
is the ssd still working?
Hello, two years later.
Is it necessary to buy the envoy pro enclosure, or can I install it with the ssd only?
Nice!, I think you have the 15 inch late 2013 macbook pro, can you install the owc aura pro x 1TB NVME on it?
Will the aura pro NVME work on it?
hi r u able to use bootcamp after installing this ssd?
This is macbook pro 2017 ?
How much does 512gb SSD cost
Thanks! I'm planning to buy this ssd and you have given me the answers to all my questions (sorry for my english)
