Don't buy a Variable ND filter if you're a photographer!

Demo & Review K&F Concept 1-5 Stop Variable ND Filter

Wow thank you! I was seriously just about to buy a $100 one that I planned to use for my photography. I'm really glad I saw this haha
I wish, I saw this before I bought a variable ND
I would like to point out something if I may. The X pattern is as noticable at longer focal lengths. I did a test about two years ago and discovered that the X pattern goes away at focal lengths above 50mm on crop sensors and 75mm on full frame sensors. I still agree that variable ND filters are a waste of money.
The X is because the filter(s) have been over rotated. You can buy filters with a hard stop, like the Moment VND filter, which prevents the X from appearing.
You saved my money~! :) Thank you for this very valuable piece of advice.
Non-sense. A viable ND is two polarisers. Any polariser will produce a band on an extreme wide-angle. Two polarisers together will produce two bands, at perpendicular angles. Stop using extreme wide angles with polarisers.
so are you saying that if you're a photographer then don't get the vnd filter rather get the normal nd filter set?
Great content! thank you in Dubai Mike?
Iam a wedding to buy a nd to buy nici variable 1.5 to after saw this vidio iam confusedplz plz plz suggest me what I will buybrand name too.i have sony 7r iii
Hey Mike , thanks
So Is not that bad if I use it for filming?
I wished I had watched this video before buying a Tiffen 77mm ND filter! Now I have to return them due to too much vignetting.
Thank you. This information is extremely useful and exactly what I was looking for! You just saved me from making the same mistake you did. Thank you again.
Yes, I fully agree with you - thanks for the DEMO.
Well, I have never encountered problems with my variable ND filter. It's a 1 to 9 stops (not 10 as is the case with most ND filters) and I get awesome results up to the ninth 9th stop. No pattern or whatsoever. It might have to do with the fact that I am using a somewhat larger filter than my lens and I use a ring to fit it. Maybe by using the ring and changing the position of where the filter would be placed without it is what saves my photos. Whatever might be the case though, it's the best 70$ that I gave for photography so far. I do not doubt the fact that what you said is a common phenomenon, but it is not the absolute case either way. A good tip is to try before you buy! Find a friend who has the filter and try it out to see for yourself. Even better, if you're able to do so, try it on the spot in the shop!
Some companies claim some of their variable ndfilters do not produce the "x problem"
Agreed. Just tried a cheap K&F Concept variable ND in a 24mm equivalent lens. Bad x pattern. Crap filter. Glad I only paid about $20 for it.
i had zomei vari nd. and no x spot
I just purchased a cheap variable filter. I think I'll hold on to it just to use as somewhat of a "learning" device before I make the step up to something more expensive. I wasn't expecting something spectacular anyway given the price point, but knowing that even the more expensive ones have this issue will save me headaches in the future. For now, imo, I think it's a decent purchase for somebody just starting out (like myself) who needs to learn before graduating to the big boy filters lol.
Can i use a 67mm nd filter on 72mm lens size
Hi I have seen watched your lumina videos which I have really enjoyed, regard videos for long exposure and nd filters I would to see some .
ND filters will really benefit your video. Try it!
Excellent presentation ! Easy tu understand, clear comparison
I used a test image for comparison of your K&F ND Variable filter being on the lens and off the lens. First test was without your filter to make sure I was getting a sharp image also tried it with multiple lenses to make sure I did not have a problem with getting a sharp image with any of the lenses. All the images with the Two lenses I used were perfectly sharp without your filter. I then use your filter on the lenses using the same settings and got terrible results. The image was completely unusable blurry after installing the filter. Also the color shift was not acceptable. The lenses I used were of high quality Canon L glass series lenses.
Dont think its shot on field Tripod is not actually positioned on ground and seems to be moving ;) Anyway thanks for the review.
I bought the same nd filter, found out the cap does not fit on the filter, is there a cap will fit it? What size? Thanks!
Anthony, so far you are one of the most reliable and honest reviewer of photographic gear I've found so far. Good work! Please go ahead and create some videos about long exposure photos. Maybe night sky pictures!
Wow, your tripod and camera are moving wildly! Thank for the review - very helpful.
Blessings to you brother. Thank you for your guidance and advice.
Hi, Anthony great videos. I ordered the K&F Concepts CPL & Fader ND2-ND32 w/ their "Money Back for No Reason Return Policy". I found videos on Youtube describing a problem after purchasing. Once the CPL is correctly oriented you turn pins on the ND filter in a slot preventing it from maxing out with the cross pattern. The problems are turning ND to the max can easily turn the position of CPL. After a while, you don't know the CPL's orientation as it has no stop. Then the return process (in broken Engish) is so complicated that you have to keep it!
Thank you. I was considering this filter.
Anthony these are very helpful, very practical thanks
It would be fantastic if you did a follow up on this as I for one would be very interested.
Anthony, Great videos, you always do a great job on explaining. I now starting to learn more about using a ND Filter. My question is related with using an ND filter and how do I know how many stops my filter has. Its most probably something easy to find but I have had the filter for a while but I am not sure about the stops. Pro Master Filter, 77mm Variable ND Code 9566 Standard. On package: The Variable ND filter allows flexible lighting control in a variety of conditions with a continuously variable neutral Density factor of ND3 TO ND400. I appreciate your time any information to understand. Thank you and keep up the Great Work.
Thank you for another awesome video please do one for portraits using ND Filters.
One advantage to a variable ND filter where intensity can be adjusted as opposed to a solid 5 stop ND filter is that focusing is less problematic. You can install the variable filter, set it at 1 stop, adjust the focus then, rotate the ring down to darken in to 5 stops and take a nice focused image. Often with solid filters you must first focus the lens then install the solid filter. Installing that type of filter means taking special care not to move the lens out of focus. Though solid filter are higher quality then are variable filters sometimes they are just not worth the extra hassle.
Yes , please add some instruction videos on using ND filters. Thanks
Did you do any comparison photos at stops 1-5? Again I learn something new every time. Thanks
Thank you Anthony. It’s good to see you out the field behind the lens. Great knowledge & straight forward. Thank you. Neville J.
