Me use xz2
Sad days for us, we lost Olympus 😥
Does this camera heat up when shooting?
Its “iso” not i.s.o.
Hipster Wankers!!
He’s Japanese but his accent is so good
This review - Not very good with video specs. Example frames per sec, auto focus response. Day - night... On to the next review.
my olympus OM-1 just broke so I'm looking for a replacement but damn there really is nothing like it
He REALLY didn't enjoy making this vid.
how long battry low
Ok people! What’s the least fidgety camera! For stills and video??? Please help
You showed me everything that I would like to know about this camera. Thank you very much.
6:18 chief that’s white and gold
Does it have a jack for an external microphone?
Why is he so fucking annoying 😒
Back to the future. They have 20Mbps now.
FFS if your going to review a new camera do your fucking homework first, all the menus you will ever need are in the super control panel...FFS
with this channel i always feel unless its a mega price leica rangefinder they dont like it. pretending its difficult to use an olympus camera might sound cool but its just not true.
I stopped the moment he said “It’s great” sarcastically 😩
“Ahhh I hate the Olympus menus...” *looks at analog knobs* You’re an analog knob. Can you do a single review without sounding like a biased dolt
I know some of you will ask - How about the M.Zuiko 12-100mm F4 IS PRO lens? How does it compare to the M.Zuiko 12-40mm PRO? The answer is here 11:30 Also, my video on the M.Zuiko 12-100mm is here: https://youtu.be/A7wPSN1x3kY
I have been watching your videos for a while, even though I shoot Canon. But I have been thinking about M4/3 and this video told me a lot of things I didn't know about the 12-40, a lens that I could use for a lot of different types of shooting. It is a very strange time to be buying into the Olympus system but the more I watch, the closer I get to making a big decision. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with the photographic community around the world.
Haha someone praying in the background? Can hear someone praying Salah.
Bought a 12-40mm pro for £323 which is a good price. Can't wait to try it out!!
I'm a beginner in using Olympus product. Currently I'm using PEN EP L 8 which is a mirrorless camera. Does this lens suit with PEN family? Thank you.
Thank you for the fine presentation on the Olympus 12-40mm F2.8! Back in 2014 this lens was the reason that I chose to buy the EM-1 camera among its competition. Over the years the zoom control has become sticky, especially in high humidity, but otherwise the lens works fine. Do you think this problem is fixable by a repair technician? Also, what repair center do you use in KL? Other lens thoughts with the EM-1: I tried the Olympus 12-100 4.0 lens, but found it too heavy to carry around. The Olympus 40-150 2.8 lens is also too heavy for me. My solution for a telephoto on the EM-1 was to get the Panasonic 35-100 2.8 lens, which is high quality, light weight, weather sealed, and has the nice feature of internal zoom; disadvantages are the reverse zoom direction (I never get accustomed to this!) and poor close-up performance. Earlier I had used the Olympus 40-150 3.5-5.6 but the quality was just OK and the lens had a focus motor failure.
On the basis of your comments about this lens, I have one arriving tomorrow. Grateful for your videos, they are among the best on YouTube. The depth and breadth of your knowledge of photography and Olympus gear is incredible! Thank you again, Robin.
Ordered this lens base on the reviews and yours was a big factor. Very detailed review. Thanks for showing your beautiful photo examples. This will be my first pro lens. Fell in love with the em1 and the 30mm macro and 14-150 lens. I prefer using it over my Fuji xt2. Image quality has been superb.
Do you use the olympus protection filters on your lenses or others if at all ?
Hi Robin, I love my 12-40mm f2.8. I have owned it for a few months now. It is brilliant and I have no complaints at all. I would never even think of trading it for a 12-45mm f4.0.
I recently picked up an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III with a 12-40mm F2.8 kit. What lens do you suggest getting after this kit? I plan on taking pictures while traveling solo.
Great video Robin! Coming from a Pentax K3-II, I just ordered a M1 Mark III with the 12-40 (mostly travel/street photography). Can't wait for my new system to arrive :-)
The main advantage of the 12-40 over the 12-100 is (apart from the size & weight and price) the 2.8 max. aperture. But the 12-100 has double "sync" IS, does that not make them equal in low light? (on IBIS Olympus body's). Furthermore, would it not be possible that the 12-100, when zoomed in, has even more capability for shallow depth of field than the 12-40, despite it's larger max aperture? If so, the only benefit that I can see for the 12-40 is in fact weight/size.
Im using this with may old em5 mark 1. Together with the budget 40-150mm, they're beasts with photos. I only need minimal.post processing
Another excellent informative presentation. The 12 -40 is such a good lens I find it hard to justify purchasing any prime lens in that focal range.
I love this lens and if I could only have one lens priced $500 or less (used), this would be it. BUT this lens does have 1 flaw - it's not terribly sharp. I'd say it's "sharp-ish" which means it's sharp enough to get very nice pictures from this lens, but you won't be wanting to pixel-peep. As Robin's own test show, It's not as sharp as the new 12-45mm f4 which is much cheaper new. The 12-40 is about as sharp as the 2 kit lens from Oly, the 14-40 & 40-150. This isn't a slam per se as those lenses are quite sharp for their cost, but the 12-40 is nowhere near as sharp as Sigma's 18-35 or Panny's 10-25, both of which are also faster. So why do I love this lens? 'Cause as Ken Rockwell says, sharpness ain't everything. The 12-40 is tough as nails (I dropped it on the floor and nothing happened), is weather resistant, has a fast-ish constant aperture, and maybe best of all it has that sweet sweet focus clutch. Simply put, it just gets the business done. Optically, is it the best lens? Nope, not close. Every prime I own smokes it optically, even the $100 25mm from Panny. But is the 12-40 on my camera 90% of the time? Yes it is, which is about the best thing you can say about any lens.
great video. thanks
Thank you Robin. I have this lens with original EM1 and they are such a great pair! For photo and video. I took this combo two days ago in San Francisco for the Chinese New Year Parade at night. Really nice pictures and videos. I just uploaded a short video on youtube. I want to ask you about video specs. I did some tests and I am positive that the focus is not lost when zoom in and out during video recording. Is this a parfocal lens?
Can pair with my em10 mark ii?
How does this lens compare with the Zuiko SHG 12-35mm f2.0 four thirds which I use on my omd ?
Being new to MFT (transferred from Canon 6D and 80D) this is the first lens I bought with my E-M5 mkii. Before buying the body and lens I rented the body and the 12-35 Panasonic for a week. I couldn't knock the image quality of the Panasonic but my rental's lens cap would never secure well and sometimes I could find photos with 2 blacked out corners because the lens cap came loose. So far everything about the Oly rocks!
*Arrived promptly. Initial impression is that lens◔。◔>**imgs.love/Olympus4?ふv**   though the body is plastic, is still well made and certainly lightweight. Have not put it to test yet on camera.*
It weighs 382g.
Rented this lens to Italy and I'd buy when I have the cash. Awesome.
Can this be used on Fuji X-T2 body?
Why would you photograph pieces of art LoL
Is this lense weather sealed?
love the review. Would like to see this lens vs the lumix 12 35 as there very similar in price. Keep up the good work!
I prefer Fuji 16-55 f 2.8
Nice video as using. Interesting lens as well.
Love this lens, I sold off a Pana-Leica 15 1.7 to get this one and never regretted it. Love the close focusing capabilities and the magnification of 1:3 is really nice for the type of photography I shoot. I'm a sucker for close ups or textures and details and this lens never let me down on the front. If I ever do decide to give M43 another go this would be the first lens I'd buy - this, the 60mm Oly macro and a tele option are all i would ever need.
Like your M43 reviews. Surely review of 40-150mm 2.8 Pro is next :)
The images appear magnificent. Ordered this lens and it is being delivered today. Can’t wait to give it a workout. 👍 Mark
Hahaha, I was just thinking about how you'd left the cover off, then you'd mentioned that people might be freaking out...LOL!
Thanks Blunty, I find your reviews to be some of the most enjoyable and informative of all youtube, It is a true pleasure to see them. By the way, could you posibly make a dedicated review of the little Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2.0 ??? Have a good one
Blunty - as usual, a great review (though it's now a rather older one). Question is.... would you still by it if you could have only one zoom in this range? Bonus question: this lens or two primes (say, the Rokinon 12mm & Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH. POWER O.I.S.)?
Awesome review! I'm looking to buy this lens now. Anyway also just wanted to say you have an awesomely ambiguous accent. I mean it's clearly Australian, but there's also influence from the "non-regional" American accent making it extremely easy for a dingus like me to understand you. I'm guessing you've spent a lot of time stateside and/or have a good amount of Yankee friends?
Blunty, you're awesome. Freakin' awesome.
just purchased. love your reviews. they're really helpful. thanks.
cheers Blunty!
Thank you Blunty! I just purchased this lens and am looking forward to using it. Your video is very helpful!
very impress with the reviews, thanks alot
I realize this is an old review but it's a good one. After being on the fence about spending so much for a lens your enthusiasm for it won me over. So far I only have the 25mm & 45mm and do appreciate how light and compact the camera is with them. I'm just a little leery about the size and weight on an E-M5 II and I really don't want to add a grip to it and make it even larger.
Perfect review! This lens is indeed fantastic and I prefeer this lens over the Panasonic. Can agree that focus speed, build quality, image quality and focal range is AMAZING! :)
You have the most informative and entertaining videos on camera related products. You are so damn entertaining, haha. I watch your all your videos just to hear you.
Thanks man, It was immensely helpful.
The locks on those hoods should be on all hoods, my first canon i had the very first thing that happened was i went to take a picture of lillies over the water from a walkway, and the hood just fell right off the camera, you would think such a light piece of plastic would float but noooo, it sank like a stone >_<
You sure are an excellent public speaker and/or seller!
Awesome review man. Been following you for tech stuff and recently realised communitychannel and yourself crossed paths early on. I'm happy to see an Australian YouTube community-like cohort happening. And I will probably get that lens myself.
I wish I could get this camera instead of going out and paying for pro photos with my family.Must be nice.
Was wondering, do you always remove noise in lightroom before posting images? I know youtube vids are not the best for judging picture quality, but you images appear clearer than my ones. I just recently bought E-M1 with 17mm 1.8 lens, and still learning. Maybe I'm missing some settings? I love the camera, and pictures look great in general, but they do seem a bit fuzzy, even on low iso. I haven't had a chance to test another one apart from mine, I hope its not a defect of something.
Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro Lens Review I love mine.  Waiting for the 40-150 f2.8 Pro... #photography   #cameragear   #lens_reviews
