A 2020 update of this review, please guys. Would love to hear what you have to say about this lens with the newer camera bodies and capabilities (and v/s the Pana Leica 12 f/1.4)
She knows better.
The "pumpy thing" was originally used by Tamron on their 90mm Di macro lens way before Olympus used it on their lenses.
I really wanted to find out more about the Olympus 12mm lens but gave up on the video partway through due to the sexual innuendo which a) made me feel a bit ill and b) makes me sad that in the 21st century, photographers have to resort to such offensive laddism.
I wish this bloody thing wasn't so expensive. It's just what I'm looking for.
What camera is he using
I miss the old Digital Rev
Anyone know what camera and lens was used to shoot this video?
What is the camera your holding ? ( new to photo sorry )
Nice to see he finally got laid. It shows.
judging the sweat on kai's back reveals the temperature is about 00000 degrees
Could you do a review/comparison with some 12mm manual focus alternatives? There's the Samyang 12mm f2 and the SLR Magic 12mm T1.6 neither of which I can find good information on.
Ma questo cretino deve campare così?
Contento con mi Olympus D-M10 pero un poco perdido, quiero encontrar más comentarios sobre el manejo de sis diales
Wow I can't remember the last time I heard such high praise for a product from Kai. I shall add it to the shopping list
If you're here for a thorough and legit review, I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place. I'm looking at you, @Steve Hoge
Can you guys please review the olympus 75mm f1.8 soon?!?! Thanks!
"Pumpy focus ring thing" "works like normal" - and then when you pull it back "it works even better". WTF does that mean? Watch an 8 minute review and I still have to go to to figure out what you were talking about?
The shot at 5:58 was fantastic!
Hey Guys, if you are interested I am selling mine :) i'm getting the much more expensive Voightlandet 17.5mm and I cannot afford both :(
Peter. I recently got one and looking for forums regarding the moving rear element glass. There's a springy part of it that moves the glass when pushed but goes back to it's position. However, as I tested it, image quality is great. Does yours move as well?
I'm only using the 12mmf2.0 and 45mmf1.8 for my traveling and wish to have a telephoto zoom lens in my kit
nice
17mm f1.8 or this f2.0 12 mm
Peter, how do think this lens will work with the X5s on an inspire 2? I know you said it needs a hood, but that would be cumbersome on a drone.
Hi guys, what would you choose?
Olympus 12mm f2 vs Panasonic 15mm f1.7
For landscapes and lens for holidays wich is better between this 12mm and 9-18 olympus?
Can it be pared with the Olympus wide convertor
Hello Peter, do I need the 12 f2.0 if I have the 12-40 mm f 2.8 Pro?
J J Abrams doesn't like lens hoods.
With your review I decided to buy this lens because I do a lot of architectural photography and landscape. I can tell you that I’m loving the lens. It’s so quiet, the images are coming sharp. Thank you.
I have this lens and love it for travel and landscape. Even some portraits with lots of context
Thank you.
I had that lens on loan back in my Olympus days, and it gave me unforgettable close up footage of puppies I had at the time. If I'd shoot with MFT these days, this lens would be a must be in my bag. I do have the equivalent today and it's my most used lens.
The part where you put fail had me dying! But, good review though. I’m just sad this lens is waaaaaaaayyyyyyy over priced. I’ll be looking for a used one for vlogging.
I love my Oly 12mm. It's a great travel lens, so small, so versatile. I took great shots from Hong Kong or New York with it. Never felt the need to use the hood it resists quite well to flare. Used it on treks in China, or on top of mountains in the Alps. It goes everywhere as it fits in a very small space. Some of my best shots are taken with it. Quality is not *absolutely* perfect if you do pixel peep, but who cares, once displayed or printed at normal sizes the the pics are fantastic.
I've been wanting to get the 12mm recently. But being a jobless student I doubt that'll happen any time soon. Also sorry to be that guy but if you think all camera gear should be black why would you get a silver lens lol.
You're a good man Peter.
Your review was so informative that after consulting a couple of lens sites I tracked down one in mint condition, silver (to use on my Pen 7 which I use as a walk-around camera) for $570. free shipping and even the original Oly bayonet lens hood. I think they are meant for each other. Monday should bring the delivery of an OMD E1 Mark II. After playing with an OMD 10 MII and a OMD 5 MII for 6 months I was ready to pull the trigger on one with a good Black Monday price. So now I have to sell a load of mint or close to mint Nikon and Pentax gear. I want to keep a D750, a D500 and a Pentax K3 (very underrated). Those combined with the Oly lot will make a good selection for about anything. Any thoughts?
I have to brag a bit, I'm waiting for a package now. An Olympus Zuiko 21/2.0 and Metabones Speedbooster from OM to m43, what gives about 15/1.4 with m43. I'm excited about that combo and the performance. Will it be better than Pana/Leica 15/1.7?
Robin you are a very dedicated Photographer who enjoys giving of your time in helping those who need help. Thank You for your time!
I just find your channel. You did very good jobs on producing these videos. Your pictures are very good too. I like your videos particular because you are inviting, happy, very positive, and make me very comfortable listening to what you said. thumbs up!
Brilliant review , great advice , thanks very much . oh and mega photos .
Thank you so much for your video! you supported me in my decision to buy a new lense. I will use it to photographing landscapes on my hike trails!
Thank you very much for this video. I learned how to get the level feature to show up! Really enjoy learning from your videos in general.
This lens is a Gem :)
Hey robin. Fellow malaysian in perth here. What do u think of tbhis lens as a vlogging lens? Is the video ois ok? In using the 17mm f1.8 but its a bit too narrow
I love yours videos my friend cheers from Chile
I’m still on the look out for a used M.8mm f1.8 fisheye lens to complete my Olympus primes having just got the M.12mm f2.0 although I do have the 9mm fish body cap.
Thanks for another excellent revue
Robin; please keep providing these great and useful reviews. I was considering buying this lens although I already own the Olympus 12-40 F2.8 Pro lens. Given your thoughts I decided not to purchase this lens although the lens itself is very useful to those needing a lens covering a wide angle view.
Your hairthe
Hi robin - i have the 12-40 pro f2.8 and taking your advise on that thanks. Just wondering if f2 or at f2.8 prime rendering would be different from the 2.8 pro ? - pen-f user. Awesome content and thanks. Btw awesome to see a fellow malaysian content!
I don't know, but I've never used this lens, maybe I'm waiting for 12mm f/1.2 PRO :)
I have the 12 - 50 Olympus with macro feature which seams to have disappeared from sale it is great I use it on my em1 mk1
With the new iPhones and what a lot of Android smartphones are doing, I’m guessing that wide angle shots will be thé look of 2020. Which Micro Four Thirds lens do you recommend for that 13mm-like look? Love the videos, thanks for considering an answer.
Hi Robin. Thanks for your work. It world be nice if you could compare de 12 mm olympus with the 15 mm panaleica. I know you’re olympus visionarry. But in the end they are both m4/3 lenses!
The Oly 12/2 with a Panasonic GM1 or GM5 makes a great coat-pocket camera.
Great video. Thank You. Best regards from Kiel, Germany.
I like the way you shot different angles of the same scene to give new prospectives. . Also, the images were nice and sharp.
Thank you.
I did mention that my 12mm is the 'Limited Black' edition :) Yes, Olympus now has two colour options on all their premium lenses, silver and black, after the success (and demand) from the now sold-out Limited Black 12mm. Technically, there are no differences between the new black and my Limited Black, only the fancy little text engraved onto the lens itself. Another information about the Limited Black is that I mentioned in the video that the hood was optional and that's true for all premium lenses but my Limited Black does come with one, and a metal lens cap, a UV filter as bonus pack :)
Speak Japanese
Should i have this or the 7-14mm f2.8?
Спасибо!
Love this lens more and more. Especially using it with my Panasonic GX9 for street photography. I did just order that square lens. It definitely makes it looks sexy! :D. Thanks for this awesome review!.
If you had to choose between the 12mm or the 17mm for street photography? I am considering the Penf with one of these two lenses for my next trip to Japan traveling around via Train and skateboard.
@jimmy Would you prefer the Olympus 12mm f2.0 or the Olympus 17mm f1.8 for street/cityscape/landscape?
Great review! But how does it compare to the Oly 17mm f1.8 that I use as my default lens on my Pen-F?
A big fan of your channel. What camera did you use to shoot this video?
Thank you.
Yes, that’s my go to lens for vlogging. I love 24mm look for vlogging.
Should i buy olympus zuiko 38mm Is it worth it? Im still a student
Incredible lens. The 3D look it produces, and beautiful tonal separation is outstanding, something which in the FF world would cost north of $3000. Your footage in the review, taken with 12mm f2, is the best looking part of review, btw: outstanding colour. Thank you.
Love to see review on Pana Leica 12mm f1.4 by you
Hey. I have now the 12-50)(going to sell) and the 45mm f. 1.8 but think I will sell too in order to get a more versatile lens instead of staying with the portrait option that the 45 gives. So I thought about the 17mm f. 1.8 and the 12.f 2.0 what do u consider better? I want to have a lens that gives me more options without losing the bokeh Ingredient that I gave to almost all of my photos. Hope u respond and help me decide thanks a lot.
Gorgeous lens but can't afford one at moment and I suppose a bit of a focal length that wouldn't get used as much as others. I use the Panasonic 12-32 for my wider shots which is a surprisingly good lens for its size.
I find shooting with primes both really great and really frustrating. If often comes down the image you capture with the particular prime lens you have in place and maybe we can have too many prime lenses. Because my style is mainly Asian street, I now carry 2 cameras, the EM5 mk2 for my primes and the EM1 for my 40-150 2.8 Pro. I have taken fantastic images with all my lenses, but how many times am I switching my prime lenses over. Yes, for my portrait work I still need my 25 and 45, but for general street maybe I really just need the 12-40mm 2.8 Pro (and of course my Samyang 7.5mm fisheye)
Very informative and such creative gear review. Keep up the awesome work! Subscribed :)
Yet another great little video, Jimmy. You are inspiring!
Seen in the Micro Four Nerds FB group, nice vid - I think the one thing against this lens is that the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm F2 is so good, and almost half the price. Sure it's MF only, but for wide angle lenses that's not much of an issue, especially with the cameras today having aids like zoom in to check focus and coloured peaking
