What a freakin Best review! You showed us that the VR works very well on SHOOTING FILM not only on shooting picture! Thank u so much!
Hello community. i am completly new on this world of camera, not background so ever. I just bought mi first camera a Z50 with this lens. This lens make a little very small noise, that makes me cringe. i do not know if it is normal. Can someone bring me peace of mind?
Is it worth getting this lens for my nikon z6? I see it’s really good lens and cheap to be honest
I've never seen you as a Canon fanboy although your main gears are Canon, in contrary, I find your judgement towards other brands the same standard as you judge Canon.
Thanks for the informative review! I grabbed this lens used and have been having a blast with it on my Z7. I've never had a super zoom that's so sharp. The Z lenses have changed the way I think about value for money when shopping for glass. And it's so nice to go hiking and do landscape work with a light kit. I've got a giant full frame 150-600 I could lug around but I'm finding myself preferring the sharp 20mp DX images to the full frame, less sharp lens.
The lens flare is not noticeable at all. Impressive.
    love the channel
Is it sutable nikon D 850?
Been taking portraits with this lens. Had my subject in a field where there were trees in the background about 50 yards behind her. I stood back and zoomed in to about 200mm to close in on her so the distance of the trees behind gave me a beautiful blured background. Do thats one way to get great bokeh when taking portraits.
It's really a great lens for its price. May be a build quality is not the best, but fortunately Nikon almost never accepts compromises on image quality for its lenses.
Great review Christopher. I'm glad you've decided to look at Nikon now as most other 'reviewers' barely know the difference between reciprocity failure and pushing exposures! Just to clarify, the Z50's sensor is 20.8mp, so a similar pixel density to a 46.8mp full-frame sensor, which I wouldn't say is un-demanding. In fact, Nikon produced this sensor series first seen in the D500 after about 8-years of using a 24mp DX sensor (the highest that was around then), probably reflecting the fact the 21mp is a better balance of detail and diffraction usability [I believe you can get smartphones with 80mp sensors these days, LOL]. Anyway, let's not beat around the bush, the performance of this 50-250 is astonishing for the price and basically achieves similar to Canon L-lenses and Nikon Gold Ring versions from 5 years ago, in a much more handy package. This is due to the use of advanced aspheric elements in the optical formula, and top-level lens coatings. Moreover, the Z50 is a phenomenal performer for virtually all forms of amateur photography and video, again blowing away anything that was around 5 years ago, and I speak as a 30-year Nikon user with plenty of legacy gear. If only Nikon (or Hahnel/Annsmann) could get spare batteries out soon! Only really the field of fast sports / wildlife is beyond it's abilities, where not just fast AF-S tracking and frames rates, but also an optical viewfinder remains essential. Hence, an amateur needs still to buy a D500 for that. I'm looking forward to your findings on other Z and adapted F lenses. I can recommend any 300/2.8 or 200/2 from the last twenty years if you like perfection! But really, if you have a Z50 kit with 16-50 and 50-250, you are far ahead of any historical APS-C set-up, and many full-frame packages.
The noise you heard when you shake the lens is the VR part of the lens. Daaaaaa
It's a shame that the Z50 was so underwhelming and that Nikon isn't pumping out a full DX lens lineup. There's definitely room for an APSC ecosystem with cheap very high quality lenses built on the latest production methods (e.g. without the mediocre older lenses of EF-M, E-APSC, and XF).
A Nikon lens many regular users will be very happy with, and in fact it can also be used by the slightly more knowledgeable users with great success, and of course a professional user can also get really good pictures with this little winner!
Please please please review the Tamron 35-150 f 2.8-4
It's a shame that Nikon doesn't develop some prime for the aps-c mirrorless camera because it has a lot of potential.
    Great reviews #LoveFromBangladesh
    F/6.3 is shit.
just a quick check, are you aware CVP link your vids in some products? seems that Z mount lenses are quite nice even low price kit. Not same as kit lenses we used in DSLR, how dramatic image quality in mirrorless.
Just got my Nikon Z50 today with 16-50 kit. I must say for a small pancake kit lens it is absolutely sharp. The sharpest kit lens I’ve ever tried. Well done Nikon! Nice review btw and informative
Do more Manual Focus Lenses for Nikon z50 pls I don't have money to buy FX Z lenses :(
With the z50 I’d say the combo is in competition with point and shoot cameras lol
It’s unfortunate that this goes 18-50mm to f3.5-6.3. Old Nikon lenses used to go from 18-55mm and at f3.5-5.6. I wish they could have improved them maybe start at f2.8. Sigh.
@Christopher Frost Photography Great review of both Z50 lenses. What would be a good replacement lens for this lens (16-50mm)? I would like a little faster lens for better low light photos. Possibly an f/2.8 in this zoom range. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Thank you for the review!
It drives me crazy that most major manufacturers, with the exception of Fuji, think apsc kit lenses should be f5+.
Not sure if I got a bad one, but it's nowhere near this rave review - it's slow, dark, horrible build, poor contrast and colors, returning the whole kit just because of this poor lens.
If you could also test M4/3 lenses.) Your methodology is very useful for practical purposes.
    Very nice Thank you. .
How does putting a filter on this lens work? It just goes on the smallest part that extends all the way?
Good to see you are doing Nikon analyses now and i hope you got time to do the Z50 too. It's great BTW! Now, if you're ever in Cambridge I have a Nikon 200mm f2 that awaits the CF badge of honour. Prepare for extasy!
Best lens review channel on YouTube.
Wow, haven't been here for ages, thought I was in a wrong channel that Chris is reviewing a Nikon lens!
With around 34 mm focal length you get objects for macro photo the largest on the image.
Is it too much to ask for the minimum aperture to be 5.6 instead of 6.3 from an apsc mirrorless kit lens?
Maybe this is your first Video when you have camera lend from Nikon Christ.
I hope future Nikon mirrorless APS-C bodies will have IBIS. Z-mount is such a waste of size for the Z50
The only issue I have with the Z50 is the lack of a shutter release input, everything else is really on the money. Saw a Z50 twin lens kit with some accessories for $800 on gumtree, which is around $560 USD. Really a bargain. and it's gone today.
Great review! Thank you for posting/making it. I’m buying the camera
Nikon also had the flip out screen for the D5300. I wish they had the same for the newer models
What would be a nice zoom lens to pair with this camera? For better quality, sharpness and bokeh?
I’m thinking of selling my D7500 which is big and chunky. I prefer mirrorless to DSLR. as I have a Sony A7iii I don’t need another full frame. I like the size of the Z50. It feels great in the hand. What you you think? Keep the D7500 or buy the Z50 ( I do still love my D7500 though. )
Changed D750 to Z6 and it's a fairy tale ! By the way, the Z5 has the same matrix as the D750, if anyone cares . an excellent review!
Is there a crop in 4k?
i have one z50, plus ftz, and nikkor dx 35mm f1.8 , autofocus works very well and the photo quality is very good in dx/apsc class
I love this camera butI am worried about future support though. feels like they are goona ditch it with the z5 out. I torn ligaments in my wrist and the weight of this camera is awesome when you consider what is in your hands. I would love a fast wide lens. I don't think Nikon will though. curious sir, noticed you have done a camera obscura vid way back in 08. have you ever done more or maybe meaningful work in the area?
Solid presentation of the z50. Just a quick question , if i take this camera and take an ftz adapter will the mount be able ti hold the heavier lenses like sigma 17-50 f2.8 on a tripod or is it going to break in half or something?
Idk that ibis is needed with the high iso these days.
Flip out is not good for vlogging, you're looking off to the left when filming. It's also not good for aligning shots. It also sticks out to the side. Please say no to flip out screens, they're a one trick pony. You can't use them in bright sunlight whereas the Z50 and other flip down screen cameras you can. As for the screen being in the way of the tripod 1/4 thread, if you think in the old way you won't figure out the work around and that goes for smallrig too. SmallRig thought it was a good idea to block the battery/card door ‍♂️ The best solution is to mount your stick or tripod on the port side. How you do that? L bracket and a side mounted gimbal head. If you don't want to spend any money and don't mind the 3s it takes to flip your footage in post you can use it upside down. A gimbal head is the best way to go with this setup as it won't block the screen and won't block your ports and won't block the battery door. You also get the benefit of having a gimbal head especially for bird photography or fast moving targets. There's several other solutions to efficiently using a flip down screen and maintaining traditional camera bahaviors
Under perfect conditions can every camera focus. When I saw the review of a professional Wedding photograph with the New Nikon Z7 II I could agree. 90% of his pictures were in focus And even the NIkon camera gives his green signal that the focus is correct it is not always so! After testing and trying my best. I quit the Nikon Z . Honesty all of the DSLR cameras from NIkon are focusing better and faster than any Nikon Z! For instance, the model is standing outside and I use a flashlight (fill flash 2 stops) against the brighter background. Guess not all pictures are in focus. In the forest, I tried my best it was not possible to focus on the face with the hairs. A camera that cannot focus reliable is not worth to buy !
I always watch camera reviews and yet can’t afford one Just use my iPhone
excellent video! however I don't agree with the last thing. N log is a 10 bit profile and what the competition is offering in log is a shitty 8 bit video. Tbh, the only thing in Nikon's favor in 2020, which is keeping its customers from switching, is the image quality. Almost everything else is better on the competition. If nikon were to make a 8 bit log profile and put it in these cameras compromising it's quality, there wouldn't be a reason to pick up Nikon for new customers and for the older ones; to stay with nikon. There are other minor things in Nikon's favor but the youtube/critique world doesn't use cameras for more than a week to even notice those things and the market of buyers is hugely influenced by these platforms. Hence, the only real good stuff Nikon has to offer right now against the competition is the Quality; and believe me, loyal customers will absolutely HATE Nikon if they compromised on the quality of the images/video coming out. It's better not to have a Log profile than to have a shitty one because Nikon's flat is pretty damn good if you know how to use it. I even prefer it over Canon's C Log sometimes!
Sir z50 or d7500? Which is better overall ? ,but Image quality is my main concern!
Even the iPhone has IBIS, size doesn't matter.
Who wants to pay $300 for a lens from b&h when i get the same thing from amazon for $120? I just saved $ 180.
No way! This is the DMA! I have a shot of the building at 6:40 (I cannot remember what it's called) that's almost exactly the same but it's from when it was under construction with scaffolding surrounding it. That's super weird!
that's the most impressive review on the Nikon Z50 that I have seen so far. truly very informative
The Z50 is my first camera and I finally made the purchase based on this video. Excellent review man keep it up
Great video. I noticed that there is slight vignetting on my z50 but not on my z6ii. So excited for all the Nikon Z products.
Really nice photos. I love the detail shots.
    Those are really amazing pictures.
    Great Pictures!
    Amazing photo's!
    Great for 1200$
How’s the autofocus noise on the Nikkor Z 16-50?
Nice want to know how u find lowlight tracking and low light focusing with kit lens as compared to Fujifilm x-t30. Thanks
Thank you for sharing the photos! looks amazing
