The following channel did a nice comparison piece on 35mm lenses for Nikon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=far_T437408&t=6s The 35D is across the board raved about as a perfect lens for cheap money. Just beware how you store it to avoid chronic problem with oiled aperture leafs. Should store it vertically filter end down with preferably aperture closed at f22.

The AF-S will be a paper weight in three to four years... I see so many AF-S lenses on Ebay that are Parts Or Repair.. A 35mm 2.8 D will ether be beat to shit, scratched glass or oily blades but still focusing..
I use the 35mm f2D on my D700. Sweet combination.
The new 35mm 1.4 Tamron outshines them both although I love my D.

This is my first prime lens, and the first f1.8 lens imgs.love/NikonAF-S I snapped a couple of quick photos to test it out. Nothing special, but I really like getting some wider apertures. I only had a kit f4 lens before, and I got some excellent pictures from it, even on my Nikon D200. I'm going to take it out for some outdoor and landscape shots very soon.
The 35/f2/D is probably the lens i used most in my life... not that sharp but still sharp enough... not a great bokeh, bus still an acceptable one... a good contrast when stopped down... nice color rendition... VERY portable, (probably the smallest nikkor lens?). you can do street, you can do portraits, you can do landscapes... when I talk to people that just started photography as an hobby the often go for the nifty fifty to feel that prime lens flavour and to get away from the plastic kit lens they got with their camera... i ALWAS suggest to get this one instead (both canon or nikon..) so cheap for what you get... it's a keeper!

35 f2D is my go to lens and I gotta convince myself to move away from that ... Jack of all for all things casual ... And yeah, I think you should compare and contrast the lenses this way.... May be a series on manual focus lens only would be an awesome one considering that no one seems to understand those beauties like you do ...

Of course modern lenses are eyewateringly expensive. They all have 15+ lenses in them that all have to be cast, cut, ground and polished by hand.
Wtf are you even needing AF in a 35mm? Screw drive is plenty fast if do you not need to move huge chunks of glass (large primes). You are not doing sports with a 35mm. I am so addidicted to the colors jumping at me out of the monitor and punching me in the face, everything with more than 7-8 elements sucks.
What about purple fringing on the f/1.4 at 1.4? Is that an issue with the 35mm f/1.4? I got a 50mm f/1.4 from a guy that has horrible purple fringing if you open it up all the way. I sent it back to him. So now I'm a little leery of the f1.4 lenses if they are going to have this kind of problem. I want a fast lens for astrophotography, which, of course, is all about high contrast, but having purple ringed stars isn't going to cut it.

You should focus on the micro contrast of the lens. Not sharpness. That determines the 3D pop you see.

is the nikon af-d 35mm a sharp lens. i do not think my copy is. how best to test the sharpness of a lens, especially this one...
in terms on AF speed how does it compare to 50mm 1.8?
Erm and it works on film cameras.
I'd get this even on a DX sensor. The whole point is to shoot at large apertures - read: Lots of blurry sides and light falloff at the edges. You are taking the sharpest part of the full frame image it generates on a DX sensor.

@pereocean hopefully someone answered your question already, but with older lenses, you have to set it to f22, and then you can adjust it through your camera.
I prefer the 35D to the 35G, mostly because the bokeh on the G is pretty dreadful.
Even for DX, the AF-D is very usable from f/3.2 to f/8. whereas the AF-S is plagued by various optical faults at anything outside the f/2.8 to f/3.5 range. Sure, the AF-S is sharper, but is sharpness the ONLY attribute? Of course not.
guy i need help please, i try to use this lens on my d7000, i can only use it at f22, when i change the aperture, it shows the FEE error. is this normal, help please

@ArtoftheImage yeah, the close up thing is very helpful especially for beginners. perhaps you could try to add some music while you do that close up part. but yeah, it certainly improves your videos overall.
@Gordonafloat - Sigma is making some really nice lenses, and they have a KILLER warranty. Here in Canada it's 10 years on their EX pro lenses.
@aveiga48 - I was thinking that's what I'd do for all the gear segments. Of course, some people don't seem to like the no sound thing. Maybe I'll have to chat through them. :-)

This video comes across as a plug for the Yongnuo. As if to put it on par with the other renowned lenses. The Tamron 1.4 should be on this list instead.
