After serious thinking I sold my 500 PF and ordered the new 70-200/2.8 S and the new 2x teleconverter. I’m really not sure if that was a smart move and I might come to regret it. I really love my 300mm 2.8 and seeing how great it performs with teleconvers, the 500 PF got little use unless for hiking in the mountains. My hope is that the new 70-200 with the 2x tc would fill the gap betwen my 24-70/4 S and the 300mm 2.8 and still deliver enough reach for hiking trips with it beeing a 400mm f/5.6.
Is that the V1 70-200 f2.8 VR you have or the V2, i have the earlier version and would like to know how it performs on full frame Z7 as opposed to my ageing APS C sensor D300 which is about to be upgraded to the Z7.
How much do you get when you put the teleconverter on a 70-200
Does the converter have a Z-mount, or are you also using the Z-adapter?
I have the same setup, Z7 and the 200-500. Have you tried using the converter on that lens for moon shots at all?

Nice video. I've always purchased the best teleconverters I could find from Nikon and they never seem to get things sharp enough for me. I just lose too much quality with them. So, for me, I wouldn't recommend the AF-S Teleconverter TC-20EIII. disappointed me too many times. Just carry the 200-500 or you'll hate yourself if it's a once in a lifetime image capturing opportunity. It also impacts the F-stops. your images are fantastic btw. I do also love the 70-200 FL VR - I don't mind lugging the larger 200-500 lens. in the end, it's worth it.
For a while, I used my Z7 + Nikkor 300mm f/4 + TC1.4 = 420mm in a light setup. But I preordered the new 70-200 f/2.8 S lens and I can’t wait.
Thanks for your test. I could never get an in focus shot with my 70-200 and TC17. Amazing crisps shots with the TC17 and 400/2.8. I will try again now that I have a Z6.
Interesting video! I got the Z6 and my Tamron 150-600 I is not working anymore, they say they bring an update, but I am actually considering selling it and investing in the 200-500mm plus maybe a 1.4x converter. Have you ever tested that? And also love the music, damn when I hear that I want to film another wildlife outdoor series :D

is there anyway to stack 2 teleconverters together?
Yes it WILL work on the newer F/4 lenses (70-200 for example) IF you are on a body that supports auto Focus at F/8. All the D800 series will do that as do other professional Nikon Bodies.
Did you say “really” or “rarely” acceptable regarding the autofocus accuracy with the 70-200? It was right after u mentioned it slowed down a bit

I’ve read all of Steve’s books and I recommend them to everybody I meet with a camera. This video is just a sample of what can be learned from his books. I’ll be reading those books for a second time because I couldn’t absorb all the information on the first go through. I’m not an amateur. Hi Steve, just watched your tutorial on TC's I have a Nikon D3300, with the kit lens plus the Sigma 70-300 mm lens. As someone on a restricted budget, there is no way I could upgrade to a super-duper lens. Is there a TC that you could recommend for my gear, say something that would double my focal length?
Just siftting through the plethora of videos that you have done and this one was yet again another treasure trove of info. As a bandaid, I did opt to get the 1.4TC for the 200-500 lens. I think your advice about using it to fill the full-frame of the D850 is spot on and something that I' m just discovering as well. This video along with the ISO and cropping tips confirm that the TC is usuable with decent lighting and the subject filling most of the frame. I should add, that I do hope to eventually pickup a 600mm F4. Thanks.

Do you know if the Z6II can do AF on the 200-500 f/5.6 with a 2XTC? Also, I'm having issues with my Kenko 300 PRO with the 200-500 after the most recent Z6II FTZ firmware. It works with the 70-200 f/2.8

I'm starting on this hobby (LOVE IT) and need some help here. What Teleconverter would you recommend for this type of set up ?
I just got a Sigma 120-300f2.8 for my D850 (2x TC came along). The lens is super super sharp and I am stunned by the sharpness from it as a 600mm (with TC)

is there any issue with putting a teleconverter on a prime lens? lets say at 50mm or 35mm?
Using manual focusing on my D3s and a 200-500 on a sunny day, f11, TC 20E III, on a tripod. I got some really nice shots of birds on branches and feeders. I was really impressed with the sharpness too. Hi Steve, love the technical stuff without the noice, you are down to the point.
Does TC reduce DOF? According to Nİkon it does. Quote from Nikon website: "TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x enhances these effects by reducing the depth of field by 50%. This separates your subject from those creamy backgrounds even more, so you can draw attention where you want it to be. Ideal for portraits and wildlife." This could be a reason to use TC just by itself. Not just to make the subject larger in the frame but to create a shallower DOF.

I've been debating on a 400 2.8 or a 600 f4, i want to photograph owls along with most other wildlife. I lean toward the 400 2.8.
