If I were Nikon or DigitalRev I'd be pissed at Kai for the way he treats equipment that isn't his! Loaner gear someone else owns sitting uncapped on the rear mount or elements? Plus he likes to place things precariously on ledges, building, etc. Have some respect dude!

Great video, my question which would you choose Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G or Nikkor 58mm f/1.4? Does the 58mm make that much of a difference? And how is it for video shooting?

That's a really weird focal length to have for a prime but I have seen quite a few like that for some reason. Love it though, my first SLR was a Konica AutoReflex T with a 57mm f1.4 hexar lens. The images just looked so right. Perfect for historic preservation.

I would buy the 58 1.4 if i find a secondhand. It’s sharper than the 50 1.4 at 1.4. I can rock the 58 anytime.

I own the 50mm 1.4g and am very lucky with it. The 58mm looks cool somehow (so BIG) but the performance difference seems not to judge the price difference...
Is it same level canon 50.2?
When I saw the price of this lens I started laughing.
The 85mm f1.4g is at least 3X as expensive as the 1.8g. I recently bought the 1.8g and get razor sharp images with it and great bokeh. This lens has too much reach to be used as a walk-around lens. Use rather the 50mm or 35mm for walk-around. It is a super portrait lens, however. I found the focus speed to be fast.
Why would someone get that 58mm for that price when the Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART smokes away even the Canon 1.2(which is a classic, but super old) and is said to loose only to the overpriced Zeiss? Not trying to provoke, I'm honestly curious :)

It's always good to read comments with that kind of comparison... I think the 58mm 1.4 is far better than the 1.4. The difference in CAs is pretty big (on bad youtube quality video), just watch the nikon logo on the 50mm 1.4, it's not pure white. So on screen or prints... I think the 58mm is for photographer that know exactly what they need. The color rendering is totally different, and the most important thing is that this 58mm give an incredible 3D look to images. The bokeh is one of the best I ever seen. It's the same thing than the 50mm 1.2 from Canon, incredible piece of glass, made for Pros with a different rendering. You don't have money to buy that kind of lenses, don't buy it. You know exactly what you want ? This lens give you the look that comes with your style ? IMO it worth the money. I think Nikon doesn't made it for being the most sharp lens as the Sigma ART or the Otus. They made it for being an outstanding bokeh machine that give this so special 3D look that only few pieces of glass can achieve. By the way, if you are not a big 50mm lover, the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 is clearly enough. Cheers PS: for having tested Nano Coated lens on some shoots, I can clearly tells you that they are just amazing! Canon now needs to introduce a series of new 50's, non of the present line up even gets close to the Nikons and it should be an interesting fight when we get to see the Art 50 from Sigma.
