This is a very problematic lens, CA is very visible wide open, strange it did not show here. But the biggest problem is AF under incandescent light, almost all the time the camera back focuses with this lens attached. This was happening with D7000, D7100, D7200. It was really sharp, not expensive, AF motor a bit squeaky, but overall a good lens if there was not that back focusing problem.
It would be also nice to see a review of the 35mm f/1.8G ED on Aps-c.
Hopefully, Nikon will release a successor soon. Canon M50 + Ef-m 32mm weighs 170g less than Nikon Z50+adapter+35mm, the maximum magnification of the Nikon lens is lower and looks much worse at f/1.8 and also the general image quality of the Ef-m 32mm f/1.4 at f/1.4 might be better than the image quality of the 35mm f/1.8 G DX at f/1.8. The image quality of the 35mm f/1.8 S(!) could be even worse at f/1.8 as the lens was designed for full frame, I have seen a sample image with bad sharpness at pixel level with the Z7 at f/1.8, so shouldn't be suited for Aps-c at f/1.8.
I see everyone talking about how they used this lens 5-10 years ago, is there any better option today for this price?
Interesting either you have a good copy or i own a bad one. My copy is good in the middle but the corners have absolutely no sharpness and a lot of fringing.
Love your review style. Less talk about specs, more on the actual performance. This lens is still the best purchase I've ever made. Got is used for less than 150 bucks in pristine condition. 6 years on, still producing lovely images

Now that you're finally reviewing Nikon lenses, I can't wait for your reviews of the two other popular AF-P lenses, the 70-300mm and 10-20mm DX lenses. You're by far my favourite lens reviewer on the internet and those 2 are lenses I'm considering, but haven't been able to find good quality reviews for.
I have had this lens for a long time. I love it on DX. I use it on my new to me D700 -FX body. I don't change the setting to crop mode and with one slider adjustment in Lightroom, I keep the corners. I always use a lens hood on all lenses.

No focus scale is a non-starter. No hyper-focal focusing I guess.
Was never expecting Chris to do review of this. While buying I was in dilema of 35 f/1.8(52.5) or 50 f/1.8(75). Bought this, it never disappointed me. Also this lens made me learn strength & weakness of 18-55 Kit VR 2 Kit lens.
G version is double price than D version but worth it if you can get your hand on it. But.
why Nikon doesn't make 50 mm DX lens?

The 35mm DX is a fantastic lens that takes really boring pictures. For DX you need 24mm.
I have a D750 and 35mm 1.8 (FX) and many other FX primes. Recently got a D7200. Question is SHOULD (not Can) I use my existing 35mm on the D7200 or would the 35mm DX be a better option. The DX version has good reviews, is easily had and relatively cheap, so I don’t mind buying one if it’s a better fit.

why you say 50mm can be use only for portrits? ive seen ppl do street photography with a 50mm, the 35 you have to be very close to the subjects and ppl on street dont like the camera on the face.

i totally agree with this review, and I have the same problem with my 35mm lens, but TBH it is better than 50 mm on crop sensor body, it feel more use full for any kind of photography.

Come on Canon, why can´t you have something like this? shure, they used to have the cheapest nice quality image lens ever, but the stm 50mm is not anymore, instead, they 35mm lens are always expensive, the 35mm mk1 is rare and even though is second hand, it still is kind of expensive, do not even talk about the 35mm IS

Do you want to know what the absolutely sharpest Nikon 50mm f1.8 is according to DXO and many pros who know? The humble and dirt cheap 50mm f1.8 AIs Series E, the cheapest they ever made. It just so happenes that they got it right. They are becoming rare on the used market as a result of the new found interest in film and using them on adapters.
