I would reccomend a rounder smaller and less dense brush to contour with and avoid the darker shade in the kit to start off with :)
Sorry only just saw this! I don't use the 'contour' brush that came with it bc it's a straight up stippling brush that would work better for bloody foundation than a contour idk why they even give you it in the box If you do wanna stick to that brush though try circular motions upwards and that might be a bit easier and always set your foundation before trying to contour with a powder! But the highlight end is pretty good and I do often use that!

I have tried powder foundations before, but always find they make my skin itch. But I love the liquid foundation, and the colour you used really suits coverage is excellent, I'm always on the lookout for ones that cover well but aren't too heavy. Love the lipstick colours as total finished look is gorgeous btw.
