Huh, I never knew this movie had a bad reputation. I viewed this movie as a B-movie, sure, but a good B-movie. Except for the extremely outdated CGI (not the sandstorm snake, but the fuel leaking into space and the martian), I have no real problems with this movie at all. It is interesting, suspenseful, scientifically accurate in many ways (though, admittedly inaccurate in others) and just a fun experience.
This movie earns its lousy reputation, and this video's title needs its spelling corrected. Thanks for sharing!

I've watched 5 review's so far and I am so surprised that no one spoke about the shitty scene where some part of the space craft went into the atmosphere of mars and desintigrated in it's atoms like if it teleported itself to the sun which makes no sense at all. 1. You need a great velocity to have a entry burn. 2. At the edge of the atmosphere, there's like no preassure at all since it's the edge of space so how tf could it burn
Underrated. Goes into a beautiful philosophical place in the third act. Predecessor to Interstellar and a lot of other films made around the time of this and after it. De Palma!

I think it's quite clear - Mars 1 left the bulk of the ship in orbit and only the command pod landed. The pod was damaged and without computers, couldn't make it back to orbit for rendezvous. After leaving Mars, the combined crews aboard Mars 1 ERV docked with the rest of Mars 1 and returned home.

I'd like to know why the centrifuge needed to spin independently from the rest of the craft. It'd simplify construction to just rotate the entire vessel around its long axis as they'd need to halt rotation to perform any serious maneuvers anyway.

As Doc Brown said repeatedly in Back to the Future, "you're not thinking 4th dimensionally". The Mars 1 crew would have their own "mothership" safely waiting for them in what was probably a stable geo synchronsis parking orbit around mars, to give them the same slow, but safe trip back to earth had things gone right. Granted, there would have to be a great deal of rationing so that 5 people could survive on supplies meant for just 4, but i am sure they could have managed. This was of course all rendered moot when Tim Robbins, the mission commander died sacrificing himself to make sure his wife and crewmates reached the surface the the re supply module and of course Gary Sinise, found his own ride off mars. Now you have a ship to support 4 people and only 3 on board. It is very interesting how those huge facts managed to slip past you. Did you actually WATCH the movie from start to finish or did you sleep through it??????

The whole spinning portion of a spaceship bugs me. Why put up with all the added challenges of a spinning and non-spinning portions? Just maintaining a pressure seal between moving and non-moving parts is near impossible. Undoubtably there would need to be electrical connections too. The only realistic spacecraft I’ve seen recently was in Netflix’s Stowaway. The entire ship was spun for gravity. Far simpler inter-connects and way larger diameter requiring far lower RPM. The diameters portrayed in 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Martian and even Interstellar would cause problems for the astronauts’ inner ears.

Also that your channel is willing to break down realistic hard scifi spacecraft is a really cool, seeing as most other channels like this only focus on stuff from starwars startrek or halo

I forgot this movie existed. Thankfully. There were a couple out at the time, one of them used ESA's logo since NASA refused to let them. Of course the film-makers didn't bother changing the script so had American astronauts and American references, they just slapped ESA badges on things.
Is it just me or is "Mission To Mars" a little too similar to "2001: A Space Odyssey"? The Mars II kinda has basic design similarities to the Discovery and the space suits on both movies look the same.
