Fats swallowed that burger in about 3 seconds and then said ," Hey kid , .give me another burger "after I gave him the second burger he swallowed it in a matter of seconds. When fans would ask for an autograph , and Fats was overwhelmed by fans , he would reach in his pocket and bust out a ink pad and rubber stamp with his name , " Minnesota Fats "now that is a celebrity !,.Fats was looking at a poster of W.C. Fields and said , " Who is this guy ? " . then stamped W.C. Except any decent player would have caught the foul when he failed to hit his one ball and sent him back to his chair for that rack and probably a few more. He's a pretty good pool player, but his arrogance kept him from getting any better. He did not care if he was the best in the world, he just wanted people to think he was, and wanted to be able to imagine he was. I know the equipment is better now than it was back then, but even then, Willie mosconi, and a few others killed him regularly. Now he was a good gambler. he would not gamble with those guys unless it was on someone else's money and there was not a big audience. Which he was almost always playing on a stake horse bankroll, (someone else's money) he would not have had a prayer I guess many of the really good pool hall players now, much less and Efren Reyes, Jeremy Jones, Earl Strickland or Shane Van Boening.
He went by New York fats until the Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason movie The Hustler came out. The movie had nothing to do with him. It was based loosely on fast Eddie Parker, (Felson is fictional) another guy that fats would not gamble with. His real name was Rudolph Wonderone. He was better than most but he was no Willie Mosconi. But he was always the news. Mosconi would spend the weekend beating fats like a drum and the papers would read "Fats lost to Mosconi" he was a great straight pool player, but was nowhere in the same league with a Willie Mosconi or an Efren Reyes.
