So called in-depth review of the Meike FC-100 which is a macro-flash / constant lamp unit, yet you refer to "dongle thing" because you don't know that this is the hotshoe-mount Control Unit which also serves as the power supply. You don't know what the set button does - so why throw away the instruction manual? The set button actually adjusts the level of luminescence from the LEDs - particularly useful in medical macro-photography to achieve maximum lighting without glare from skin or blood. You refer to it as an alternative to "the standard box lights for video" - whatever that is meant to mean. It is a macro flash / lighting unit and it's primary use is for close up photography (macro) as found in medical photography, engineering and advertising work. It is generally not a substitute for a dedicated video lamp as even at it's highest light setting it is generally deficient for videography and has a very limited depth of field and angle of dispersal. The "retracting holders" are actually the mount sprockets. Next time you may wish first to give a cursory glance to the instruction manual before reviewing the "product" you struggle to recall the name of; better still, leave it to someone who knows what they're talking about. Hope your knowledge of correct use of condoms is rather more adept, for the sake of mankind.
Thank you so much! Mine came in a few months ago and it worked. But today I tried to keep the light on, unfortunaley the green light underneath the 'light' option keeps on blinging. When I click 'mode' the whole thing just switches off by itself. Perhaps because of the cheap batteries.. I dont know.. but at the beginning it worked perfectly :-( When I try the flash.. it also shuts down everything..
I noticed that high pitched whistling sound when the light on continuous, is that going to be an issue with audio when doing video? (how about with an external rode mic mounted?)

Yes, and you can see in the video the difference between shooting in sunlight with no light, then with the light on low setting and again with the light on high. Makes a huge difference.

The "whinning" is actually the pulse-width modulation circuit ... high frequency pulses (anywhere around 5-15khz), which controls the brightness (power) of the LEDs ... classic dimmer function ... similar to motor speed control ... but not a rheostat as such ...
The high pitched whistling noise you're hearing is down to the attenuation of the rheostat. If you have the lights on max output the rheostat is essentially out of circuit so should not make a noise. But it isn't an issue as this is a macro lamp / flash intended for stills photography. They are not generally meant to be used in videography - for that get a dedicated video fill-in lamp. If you want to use this for videography then mount the control unit as far away from the microphone as possible - say on a hotshoe extension arm, or use a separate microphone(s).
