HAVE my 055CB Manfrotto from 1994. Heavy , built like a ship all metal & aluminum, It has needed some adjustment/tightening of the legs over the years but this is expected.i find the current Manfrotto quality not the greatest,
Interesting issue about the grooving, I'm considering buying this or the Aluminium version, would Aluminium lessen the grooving issue? there is then the obvious downside that Alu version is 1KG heavier than this one. Great video. thx.

Turned out to be the c ring missing from the center column. I contacted Manfrotto and they sent me the missing c ring. Now it works great!
Jacob I just bought this tripod and when I was checking out the 90 degree features the whole red assembly came apart in 3 pieces! One piece was a tiny black plastic insert that took me about a hour to find! Has this happened to you? Is this a defect? Operator error???
Can you take out the centre column? I just want a tripod to go low to the ground for some landscape photography to get closer to rocks in the foreground etc.
Do you know what causes the scratching of the center column? I had the aluminium version of the 190, found some markings as well, it doesn't seem to be a problem as seeing it on the carbon fiber one. I thought about lubing it.
what is the weight on these carbon fiber models?

I have got this tripod and I have encountered some problems. It comes apart after a while. First, one of the feet got loose. It took me fifteen minutes to find one of the small part that fell in the grass. Secondly, the centre column came apart when I pulled it out. I had to go and find a video on YouTube to find out how to put it back together. Last week, it got dismantled the same way. I still have to put it back together. The large ring that keeps it all together is not tight enough. I am. sure it will happen again. This is not acceptable at this price (700€ with the ball-head)

question, how is carbon fiber good at stiffness and absorbing shock? is shock absorbed by being stiff? I'm confused.
Bought the four sectioned version of the 055 in carbon fibre. Mainly so it will fit in my check-in suitcase when flying. Great investment. I am almost 6ft tall so needed a tripod that was a decent height, as my Manfrotto BeFree was doing my back in (even though it is a great travel tripod)
I have the aluminium version, and I love it. I can understand why a pro would consider it worthwhile to save that one pound weight and pay the extra money. We're talking 5 pounds versus 6 pounds when you include the head. I personally wouldn't dream of it. For shock absorption carbon fiber is better, they say. But for stiffness aluminium is better, from what I've read. Buy the way, this isn't a big tripod. I bought it to get something more portable than my old Manfrotto #161mrk2B and Super Pro 3-way head. Head included it's over 9 feet tall and weighs over 20 pounds. But it is sturdy!
Does look like a really nice tripod. If the arm was able to lock diagonally I might have bought one.

I just bought this POS. When I tried to put in the 90 degrees mode pieces went flying everywhere!! DO NOT BUY this. I'm glad I didn't have my camera attached.

Intelligent review, thanks. One detail that's worth noting I think is that that the centre column can easily be removed to make packing for travel a little easier. I use a Slik AF2100, an excellent pistol ball head that adds another 15 cm/5.5" height.

My use case for the arm connector thingy is to hold up a monitor or an ipad so I can check focus and frame my shots better. It's actually quite handy.
Got mine on sale at B&H for $230 (carbon fiber version) but when I got it, the center column exploded when I raised it for the first time, and I had to get a replacement. But now that I've heard the same thing from others who've owned it, I'm not sure I trust it enough to take as my only tripod when I'm traveling. So unfortunately I think this is a tripod that will remain in my studio only.

Thanks very much for the video. I am looking hard for a tripod suitable for landscape work and don’t want to buy Chinese. Manfrotto tripods are therefore very much in the frame and I’m trying to decide between this one, the CXPRO3 and the 190s - all carbon fibre. Your video has helped me on the journey.
Just ordered the 4 section over the 3 section since I saved $120 and got it for only $320 after tax. I'm slightly worried that it won't be stable enough for astrophotography, though.
I enjoy my Manfrotto, but will seriously consider this Carbon version.
Which would you recommend for general purpose, this of the 190 version?
