then drink it , dont waste it
Glad my carbide days are behind me.
Ancetylene?
Know what the Poles called these? Karbidsky Lampy. No kidding.
Gas dropper? No, Guy's Dropper.
Ancetylene? No, acetylene.
Great video, very informative. I think you are slightly wrong about the clip thing because I have seen very old miners hats from the 20s and 30s that took the wire type clip.
The bootlegger story was cool!
Coke and limestone was put in electric forge melted poured cooled and then broken up . Not just coke
I just bought one like that, waiting on the carbide to come in. Thanks for the video.
Used one of these when I was spelunking back in the late 60's early 70's. Course there are plenty of caves for this in Alabama and Tennessee. LOL. I also had my grandfather's lamp he used for coal mining in Coalfield, Tennessee. Have a great day.
Man , you really started me on a trip down memory lane with this one...Somewhere, I've still got the drawings he used to explain this to me, but here goes...My grandfather used to tell me stories about his life, and for a few years, he was running a small farmer's coal mine, in north eastern Montana. This was during WW2, and the bottled gas was not available often. He used a water tank, about 70 gallons of volume, cut a smooth 5 inch hole on the top, and bolted a flanged, gasketted 6 inch pipe on top. Part of the gasket was a piece of inner tube, separating the pipe from the water tank, and had a small hole in it. he had a long screw with a handwheel in the top of the pipe, to screw down and enlarge the hole.He loaded carbide in the pipe, filled the lower tank between half and three quarters full of water, and connected the output hose to the side at the bottom of a small tank of water mounted beside the main water tank. the gas bubbled through the water to the top, as a kind of flash arrestor, and he hooked his welding gas hose to this contraption, and compressed air in place of his oxygen hose. To start the generator, he would crank the handwheel in to elongate the hole in the rubber flap, letting the carbide begin trickling in to the lower chamber. If he needed more pressure, crank it in a little further. He said that he welded and cut enough to keep the mine operational through the war, keeping the area warm. (most burned coal for heat in the area at that time...) the compressor was to run a small air powered rock drill, so he had a ready source of air. I've never tried it, but his brother in law still used the carbide generator, as they called it, until he shut the mine down in the early sixties.he used the hardhat mounted lamp, and told me he had to be careful if my mom went down in the mine with him for an hour or two, the focus on his lights was such, he accidentally set her hair on fire one time.... at about four feet away, according to mom. she was about six at the time... he smothered the flame, but she got a trim...Thanks for bringing back the trip down memory lane for me, I learned a lot from him, and though he died 25 years ago, I still find myself referring back to his stories and teachings, when I run into something that stumps me for a bit... he was mostly self taught, but he had more wisdom in his little finger than most people I've met... I still miss him.
