I bought getting started in electronic when it first hit the shelves at radio shack and I still have the first book on electronic the ARRL 1956 I was born in 1955 I bought it in 1965 . I have a large collection of electronic magazine's from the 60's through the 90's .
Paul, firstly you make excellent points re the wonderful Mims books. Not only the getting started in electronics but also the short Engineers Notebook series once available at any Radio Shack (R.I.P.) that, with judicious searching, can be found and downloaded from the internet. (They are in the "public domain"? Who knew?) Also, with respect to the ARRL handbook, if one can indulge in such luxuries, I'd recommend picking up one from earlier decades off of eBay. Don't need to go crazy. About four should do. I have one from 1957, one from 1977, one from 1997, and the centennial edition from 2014.
