Ok guys, check the science. Pulse oximeters don't measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. It measures the COLOR of the red blood cells. Yes, the reflected red blood cell color in an otherwise healthy individual, correlates to an estimated oxygen level. There are at least two cases that this reading is not usable. Carbon Monoxide poisoning causes cherry red skin thus the reading will be high, but the body is in distress. Cyanide poisoning blocks the cells from using oxygen at the mitochondrion level thus the red blood cell have a normal amount of oxygen and again the body is in distress. There may well be other cases. For most medical situations the pulse ox is useful to show trending toward better or worse.
I work in a health care rehab setting. We use those all the time, under VERY bright lights and have no problem with them.
