Note the absence of an offset control. Forget about driving any kind of active device requiring bias, such as a transistor or vacuum tube. I am building a driver for a dielectric barrier discharge in Deuterium, using an IRF540 power MOSFET. Take a look at the data sheet, figure 3, gate to source voltage vs drain current. The current doesn't even start until 4 volts. Some generators have as little as +/- 5 volts on their offset controls. This is not enough for this type of device. Today's lesson: no offset, no buy.

so, bottom line, for a hobbyist that barely knows enough about a signal generator, and has no money, would you recommend this, or is there a different cheap basic fg that would serve them better?one of the reasons i was liking this is that the amplitude was adjustable, and there was a readout for it. most cheap ones i saw didnt seem to be amplitude adjustable, let alone actually tell you what it was, without external equipment.
Wel done !! My experience when it comes to Chinese electronics is - if it has a branded name IE. (fluke ect ) quality is great - if it's a Chinese branded product it looks great from a far but far from great. LOL

These frequencies (e.g. 5kHz) can propagate into the earth if a ground probe would be connected to its BNC output?Many producers of long range metal locators claim it can propagate till 500m range from the probe.I have doubts a 5v device has this power... Maybe you have a clue.Thanks.
And also, I think you have not adjusted probe attenuation
You could have used a 10x probe to avoid clipping and show a much better demonstration of the offset.Also, the function generator the you have got can go to 1hz by adjusting the frequency step.
can i use its output to power something small ? Also is the output AC or DC ?
Is the 'frequency step' menu how you set the adjustment value? Maybe this is how you select frequencies less than 100Hz
