Hi! I watched some of your reviews on this product and enjoyed them. My boyfriend is an avid hiker/hunter and I was thinking of getting him this watch. I hear that there are downloadable maps you can get for the device but they have a cost to them. Do you have to download these maps to use the watch or does the included Topo 100k map work just fine? (I'm very new to this GPS technology.) Thanks so much!
Hey thanks for the great review. Do you find the small screen of the watch to be an issue (compared to paper topo 7.5 x 7.5 minute maps or even a handheld GPS)? Also, what are your thoughts as to carrying another item that needs to be charged daily on a multi day backpack?
Can the watch used to saved trail or mark points?
So, these are U.S or Canada only maps, or can you upload, say, a Afghanistan map and if so, would the watch be able to connect to GPS in extreme environments and/or supreme altitudes and locations?

Great review. I have a tactix that I use for everything but was thinking about making an up grade to the epix. I am very curious about how the accuracy is on this considering it has GLONASS support compared to just regular gps signal on my tactix.

Does this watch set the time off the GPS down to the second so it is accurate to a time you would see on a GPS or atomic clock?

"In depth". Are you kiddin? This is a EXTREMELY superficial review of the navigation capabilities of the Garmin Epix.
Choosing "smart recording" from "1 second" recording does NOT save battery, it only saves memory.
which Maps Inside ? works worldwide or have to Install maps can download another country Maps?

HRDLPN, The reason that any GPS receiver (other than a commercial-grade DGPS*) shows movement when you are standing still has to due with the inherent inaccuracy of all consumer-grade GPS units. Just as a consumer GPS can only be accurate to about within 10-30 feet of your ACTUAL location, it cannot track your speed accurately when standing still. The constant error factor makes it look like your moving even though you are not. If you were to stand in one spot long enough (say a couple of hours) and then zoom WAY in on the track you'd see that the track has repeatedly zig-zagged this way and that because it cannot accurately pinpoint your location at any given moment. I left a 60CSx on for a full day once. It logged 14 miles while sitting on my desk, just bouncing around! However, once you start moving the speed accuracy improves, though the position accuracy still remains about 10-30 feet, plus or minus. That's why on a trail your outgoing track seldom matches your returning track even though you stayed in the middle of the trail in both directions. And because of this error factor identical units worn by the same person on the same route will never match exactly as to distance traveled and duration of travel. There is always a slight deviation between units because of this error factor, not the units themselves. Back in the bad old days of "selective availability" prior to 2000 things were far worse. Units then were only accurate within 656 feet (328 feet x2)! I hope this clears the matter up for you some. (*FYI A commercial-grade DGPS uses ground-based radio signals to refine the GPS coordinates provided by satellites by using triangulation to within a hundredth of an inch or so.)

Awesome field review I am thinking about getting one of these as a basic trail tracker that can double up as a daily-wear watch too with bluetooth notifications from my phone. Another YTer did a review that focused more on that secondary aspect and it looks like a winner for me.

Im bummed that my epix suddenly stopped acquiring satellite after doing the resets and all. I put it in the drawer and put my old tactix back on.

It wont be as convenient as fenix to load while wearing it just like you tested on fenix3 (even wearing it right handed). I was told at running expo to wait until July at least to buy it in France. Better this way. Anyway, it'll be too late for my next treck ;) Can't wait for testing results lol
