How does the image quality compare to the Canon EF-S 18-135mm STM?
I'm asking because I don't like the focus wobble when zooming while filming that seems to plague every Fuji lens.
111th.
thank you. alway like your review
I use the 18-135mm as my kit lens, especially when traveling it's glued to my X-T2. I'm mostly using it at f/5.5-f/8 as this will deliver the sharpest pictures. It's a nice lens, but the price tag is way too high.
I hated this lens when I first bought it, but it’s sharp between 35/100 at f5.6. and I find it good for landscapes.
Can you review the XF 100-400 mm? I cannot seem to find any good reviews on image quality on this lens.
I was able to find this lens in really good condition for as low as $300 in my country, lol. Either people don't know about its price or I have no idea. Sadly can't buy it right know, i'm extremely low on budget. But for about $500 new it would be a nice option, not $700.
Thanks Christopher for the review, an also for the one you did on the Fuji 16-80 mm some time ago. I wonder whether you would have an opinion on the relative optical quality, with which I mean primarily sharpness of the two lenses inside the range they both cover? One might expect a newer lens, with a smaller zoom range would be better, but is that what you experienced?
For what it is it is ok , but garbage is garbage no matter the added color or finish .
I own that lens for five years now; I bought it in a kit with my X-T1 so I had paid peanuts compared to what Fuji charges for it these days. Yes, back in the day it came in a kit.
But I quickly realised it will be my sunny lens only, good only for holidays in a very sunny place, course the second you drop the aperture under f11, especially on extreme ends of a zoom range, you can kiss your IQ goodbye. So it's not the stupidest idea to to take additional lens, an small prime maybe, on a trip with you, even some vintage lens might work.
The real problem is they ask £680 for it (current price on Amazon). There is nothing particularly wrong with it, as a superzoom. Just the performance does not match the asking price
Are you the guy from Peppa pig.?
Nice lens for the vacationer, whenever the “new normal” permits it. Better to have one decent lens instead of dragging along many on holiday.
Thanks for doing this one. I was considering it :D
Honestly as somebody who had the original 18-135 IS non STM I am surprised to see how good super zooms have got. That lens sucked prettey bad.
Canon 18-135 seems very bad compared to this
Hey Christopher, if I lent you a bunch of vintage lenses to review would you do it as a piece about advantages and disadvantages of shooting with vintage glass? I'd love to see that and I bet I'm not the only subscriber who would
Don't want to be nitpicking but a superzoom lens is a lens that has a zoom ratio of 5 times or more. Therefore, both the 18-135 and 16-80 lenses classify as superzooms.
Fuji 10 24 please
Good performance for super zoom nice close up shots :)
Get your Fuji XF 18-135:
UK:
USA: would you think about a Fuji kit comprised of the Viltrox primes (23mm, 35mm, 56mm, 85mm), Fuji 16mm 1.4, and this 18-135mm as an only zoom for walkaround when long and short range are desired?
Forgot to mention it's WR
It's built as an all-purpose lens and therefore it's only logical this lens is a sum of all the compromises it has to make. It would be downright idiotic to expect that this lens will deliver images that are as sharp as prime lenses. I'm using it for travel, landscape and street photography and this lens will serve you just fine for that. I have taken some really great travel pictures that could be mistaken for professional pictures (due to the amazing locations, not my talent!). In the same time the 18-135 doesn't perform well for other types of photography such as wildlife/sports, portraits and indoor stuff (due to the lower aperture).
I think the price is a bit on the high side, but it has some impressive features. I know from experience that the image stabilisation is working quite well (although the promissed five stops will be a stretch) and the weather resistance makes it possible to shoot in soaking rain (if you want). The autofocus is nog very fast, but is fast enough for semi-professional use. As a kit lens I would recommend the 18-135 mm over the 18-55 mm any day.
I dont have this lens yet but paired with zeiss touit macro planar 50mm i think id be set for what i do while travelling
4 out of 5 = 80%
Hi, should I replace my xc16-50mm with the xf18-135mm as my travel/general use lens? or should i get the xc50-230mm/xf55-200mm to complement the 16-50?
All i can say is that i own the XF 16-55 f/2.8. XF 10-24 f/4. XF 55-200 f/3.5-4.8. 35 and 50mm f/2. They are all great but sometimes when i'm on travel or simply walking around i don't really want to take my bag and i don't know which lens to put on my X-T2 or X-T20 !
This one will be the solution as an all rounder when i'll go for a walk in town or anywhere else with no serious photographic goal !
hey 4/5 is 80%:)
Is it sharper at 18mm than soft kit lens 18-55?
First zoom I added after getting my Xpro 1 with 18mm f2.0 & 27mm f2.8 I find it hard to fault for what it covers it's certainly as good as the other so called super zooms out there.
Please put lens hoods on they are supplied for a purpose especially if you haven't got a UV filter to protect the front element good review
Not the fastest or sharpest, but a great walk-about lens.
Is this lens good for video? T-X20.
i did a shake test on my lens, just out of curiosity. and it makes an awful lot of noise. can anyone with this lens verify my findings?
This lens performs really really well at all focal lengths. Ok wide open on 18mm is weaker at the edges but if you're a photographer not a pixel peeper, you will get some wonderful images from this lens.
I sold all my canon gear, And now have an xpro2 with a 35f2 and a 10-24 but i need a lens to use in the studio. the 50-140 f2.8 would be great but its also quite expensive. this lens should be great i think? mostly shoot at f8-11 anyways in the studio.
Is this lens good for video?
Im confused what should i buy Xf 55-200mm or 18-135 what is the different anyway? and which one is sharper? help me pls
hi damian, did you find that when u shake the lens there's something shaking or wiggling inside? I just bought mind couple months ago and find out appearance of that annoying things. I'm wonder if it's defect product or just wear and tear. thx
Does it squeak when you zoom in? My 55-200mm doesn't do that.
Hi Matthew ! What about 16-80 ? What is better for travel and trekking ?
Hi I m. Freelance streetphotographer with my xt2 and xf35 1.4. What do you think about getting this for street? I ve never tried yet. Tks
An xf a kitlens what about the xc serie, sounds kitlenses to me? Just ordered myself an second hand xf18-135 we will see
I would choose my 18-135 for sure but just as an aside I take two fuji cameras at times one with the 18-55 and the other with the underrated 50-230 wich together gives me an 18-230 range (27-350 approx ) equivalent. No bag no other lensesjust my xt1 and xe2 and those two light weight lenses. Works great with one shoulder strap and regular strap.
thinking about this or the 15-80, which would be a better choice? i just want a mid range zoom lense with decent wide angle
Just purchased this lens used from b&h and just having the hardest time getting sharp images. Thinking of returning it. I just am unsure if it’s something I’m doing wrong or the lens is faulty. Most images are blurry when zoomed into the focus point
23 mm 1.4
Gun to my head My 10-24mm
Well, Gun to my head? My 100-400 so I would sell it and buy a few replacements On a good note. I just scored me a second hand 135 for less than half price new.! Winner, winner chicken dinner.
The one and only: XF 16-55 2.8. Versatile enough and you can use it for portraits and shooting in low light as well. The one to rule them all :-).
Hi, I wanna talk to you, can it be possible anyway? I am really excited and confused about fuji.
Do u sleep with it?
I'm thinking unpopular landscape trinity: 10-24, 18-135 & 100-400. Covers everything.
What’s the point of keeping a fuji lens if the guy is robbing your camera
The gun-point lens I choose would be a Fujifilm XF 55-200mm because I always shoot street photography from the back of my motorbike (in Vietnam).
This circumstance always puts some distance between me and subjects.
Therefore, I prefer to have the reach more than anything. And the 55-200mm is perfect for that.
Best lens would be a true 24mm or 28mmthat means a16mm or 18mm f2.8.
I travelled for seven weeks in the US and Canada last year with my Fujifilm X-T3 and XF 18-135mm and XF 23mm F2 lenses. The 18-135 was stuck to my Camera at least 80% of the time. Worked well for me.
Nice video happy Larry
Mine, either 23mm or the 56mm :D
On holiday in Greece, lovely. Well, I had the the fish platter, delicious. Strolled down to the beach on an incredible evening and got mugged. the mugger said ( in broken english, ps, he had a bright orange jacket on.might've been the same guy you saw on the mountain.) Anyway, he said, pointing a gun at my head, you take a one a lensa only or I shoota your head offI said look mate, take the lot, I'm going Sonyadio
Very good hint for the X-H1!
can you shoot in slower shoot with a fuji xt2 using the 18-135?
Any video with a good ol' English (not Yankee) CRAP in it, is ok with me. Very informative - brilliant delivery. Ta.
@7:38 in “all this pixel peeping nonsense” EXACTLY thank you!
LMAO, soooo many pix peepers ♀️ and often usually those peepers are weak in their photo abilities ~ just say’n
Just came across this and have just bought this lens as a general walkabout on my X-T2. I did a side by side comparison with my 16-55mm which as you know is as sharp as a tack. The one thing that really surprised me was that while the 16-55mm was sharper it was NOT by much and images processed through Iridient I could not tell them apart (well hardly) To try the quality out I have been submitting images through stock sites and the rejection rate was about the same. The quality of Fuji lenses are great which goes to show that not all zooms of this range are equal across brands. Great vlog
Great review! Thanks for sharing
Which camera do you prefer for video and why? The z6 or the xh1?
I sold my 55-200mm and got 18-135mm instead. Decision was correct. IQ almost the same, but much more useful
You should rename this video “Fuji XH1 review”
Have you tried it for video? I’ve picked up both the 18-55 kit lens and the 18-135. I might keep the 135 as primary if only for the weather proofing. Many thanks!
Excellent review. Thanks!
Hi Bob it’s Merv, cool videos mate, must pop in and see you at some point, hope you are well!
Brilliant mate. Bloody brilliant.
Good review . Thank you.
