I disagree with sizing up, if possible try to size down, if you get too small then you can usually always untie the laces and make it more loose and the elastic band will help, but there isn't a way to make it smaller if it's too big, plus there's also the aesthetic, if you go too big you risk looking like you're wearing a diaper and just looks bad, I'm a 30 inch waist and i wear a medium winning groin guard, and since it's japanese it's smaller.
